DS is ten months old....I'm paranoid about what to give for finger foods, and quite frankly when I give him cereal bits, he just plays with them. He plays with the sippy too....I wouldn't be so worried, but he's going to a preschool in September, and they are supposed to bring a sippy cup and a snack they can feed themselves.....

Oscar likes Cheerios but plays with them sometimes too. He likes to bang on the tray of his highchair and watch them bounce around. So the dogs get about half of the cereal since so much of it winds up on the floor. I think the key to self-feeding is patience. Some kids get it right away and others need more time to work out the mechanics of getting food into their mouths. Just keep offering different things and don't stress about it too much. Just because the preschool wants you to provide a snack, that doesn't mean he has to actually eat it...right?

As far as cups go, my baby couldn't figure out how to use a regular sippy because he's breastfed and never took a bottle. So the concept of tipping his head back to drink doesn't seem to make sense to him. I thought we were doomed until I found a good, inexpensive BPA-free straw cup (the Gerber "Cool Twisties" cup...). Because he can hold it upright and he needs to suck to get liquid out of it, he figured out how to use it right away. So he actually drinks out of it instead of just playing with it. Yay!
