My friend heard somewhere that homemade baby food is bad. Has something to do with germs/ bacteria/ etc. in homemade food that the jarred stuff doesn't. I totally don't believe it. If my baby were to get sick she would get sick off of eating too much dog hair before getting sick off of mushed fruit or veggies. :giggle:
Has anyone heard of homemade stuff being unsafe and have any advice or research that would support the homemade stuff?

Wow that is insane...home made baby food is much better, there are no artificial colors, additives, preservatives, you know EXACTLY where the fruit and veggies come from since YOU are the one choosing them, and preparing them. Sometimes jared food is cooked at high temps and that kills a lot of the nutrients and they're artificially added back. Make sure you wash the food properly.

Is it also bad for us adults to eat fruits and veggies because of the bacterias and germs?

Sounds like something a baby food company came up with to keep people buying their product...
I made my own baby food for my dd and she never got sick! Not to mention that it's WAY cheaper!!

I suppose there is some risk of bacterial growth if you were to can your own babyfood, but i feel like most people freeze it these days... I really can not see how steaming carrots, mushing them and freezing them could be unsafe.

at least I hope not because jackson's been eating homemade food for 6 months!

Like PP said, there might be some risk if you were canning your own food (but you run that canning anything yourself). But for the homemade baby food we make these days, freezing and refrigerating...home made is so much healthier!

If that were the case, how did people feed their babies until Gerber came along? :)

I made my son's babyfood and am loving doing it again for my 9 month old! I can't stand the smell of the food in jars and if I won't dare taste it then I won't give it to her! I like that I control no salt, added herbs and variety! I steam/boil/sautee in EVOO, mush it and then freeze in ice cube trays and store in freezer bags...saving tonnes of money and I know she's healthy! There are great Recipe Books out there for making your own baby food too, to encourage you to cook with vitamin/nutrient-filled natural ingredients - no preservatives! Enjoy!

Homemade food bad? LOL! Try reading Ruth Yaron's "Super Babyfood". She backs up everything with scientific proof and has done all the research. Really... One taste of Gerber "Peaches" was all it took to convince me that homemade food was better in every way! Babies get ripe fruits packed with nutrients instead of something preserved in a jar. You can cook fruits and veggies at home and kill germs too!

I am using Super Baby Food too. I think they just wouldn't recommend you trying to store it in jars that weren't truly being steam sealed etc. Yes, then it COULD go bad. If you do the food cube method, you are good for 3 months though.

My dd won't touch jarred food with a ten foot pole! :giggle:

I never even considered buying jarred food. Nasty stuff, if you ask me. That's why they use it for the "can you name that food?" game at babyshowers. It's overprocessed to the point that you can't tell if it ever was fresh produce.

There is a *little* something to this person's comment. Baby food companies screen carrots, spinach and some other vegetables for nitrate concentration, since nitrates can be dangerous for babies (read more (http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/nitratearticle.htm)). If you live in a part of the country with high soil nitrate concentrations, you might want to avoid home preparation. Baby food companies also process vegetables immediately and they could therefore have higher nutrient concentration than things you buy "fresh" at the supermarket. It all depends on how much the food is processed. I've tasted disgusting jarred carrots that reminded me of malt beer and yummy ones that tasted exactly like the ones I made. If you do buy jarred food, go for organics and check labels for additives. Most things should have vegetable or fruit and water as the only ingredients.

The only thing I have found that I have to be careful of with my dd is that she doesn't tolerate some of the home made foods like she does the store bought only because the homemade ones are not cooked like the store bought and they are more acidic. Peaches is one of them, other than that its the same old same old from the pediatrician, just make sure not to introduce more than one new food a week so you know how there body is going to react to it.

From my research nitrates are the only big concern, but there is the same risk of them in jarred food too. Staming carrots and such is reccomended over boiling them b/c of nitraies and the fact that it perserves more nutrients.
I made all my baby food, saved a ton. I liked that I ontrolled the texture and consistancy. I think that is a huge reason my DD took to table foods so easily (by 8 months.)
If you go by the germ theory of making your own, then don't you pose that risk with every meal you make your kids? I know in this house we eat leftovers, wouldn't that increase the risk of germs with this theory?
