Few questions...

How old was your lo when they self fed?
Did you do anything to encourage it? If so what?
Or did they pick it up on there own?

I'd like to know, too! DD doesn't seem to be interested in eating finger foods...

Depends what you're talking about. DD was able to feed herself cheerios, crackers, etc at about 7 months old.

As for self-feeding with spoons... not even close! :giggle2: unless you count food absorbed through her forehead

I started with cheerios when DD was 7 months old. At first she'd try to palm them, and then have a heck of a time getting them from the palm of her hand and into her mouth, but she figured out that pincer grip and now absolutely loves them. She's since had little bits of cheese that way, and raisins, bits of strawberry. I've introduced most foods as purees at this point, and she doesn't seem to like the chunkier purees, so I'm slowly introducing some of the same foods as soft finger foods.

But a spoon? She loves to play with one, or grab mine, but she doesn't get that it doesnt' self fill like a bottle.

We've tried Nutrios and small bits of soft fruit/veggies, but DD does choke on them...scary! She loves to grab the spoon and guide it to her mouth, though when we feed her (thicker) purees.

i think ds#1 was about 7/8 mos when he started w/cheerios. and ds#2 was about 8/9 months w/cheerios. i just watched them play and when they could do the pincher motion with their fingers, that's pretty much when i started. then i would just put them in a high chair and put some cheerios on the tray. at first most would end up on the floor, but after a few weeks or so, more and more got into the mouth. now, ds#2 pretty much feeds himself everything, unless it needs a utensil (he's 11 mos.). it pretty much just depends on your baby...their personality, their desire, etc.

cheerios pretty much dissolve in their mouths. they get mushy almost the instant you put them in. some of the organic brands, however, are crunchier and don't dissolve so well. that's why we pretty much stuck to cheerios & the gerber puffs (they dissolve too).

Rice and corn puffs are awesome if you're worried about choking- they dissolve quickly in the mouth.
