View Full Version : My almost 5 year old wants to go to school

But she misses Kindergarten cutoff because it is September 30th and she is a November 5th babe. I want to homeschool her this year, what direction should I be looking in? I have the Hooked on Phonics Pre-K workbooks, well the 3 I found at Family Christian Books. What should I be focusing on? If I pushed it, she could probably go to kindergarten, but I want to at least try out HS. Help please!

I was browsing and found this-

It's a start right? Now to find the cheaper and free stuff.
For K-12 we have the Ohio Virtual Academy. It's just the pre-K that I am stuck on.

Are you doing K at home? If you're planning to do public school after this, those are helpful. If not, and this is PRE-school, try these:
What a 4yo should know (http://www.magicalchildhood.com/articles/4yo.htm)
Recipe for preschool peace (http://www.universalpreschool.com/articles/preschool_pressure.asp)
Pre-school home learning activities (http://www.besthomeschooling.org/gateway/inted16.html)

for pre-k and k and even 1st you can do things sooooo cheap, and it's crazy to spend more than a few dollars on a curriculum. Or even esp for pre-k and k buy a curriculum at all. I know many do it, and they feel they need to, but you can do it all for free or very cheap.

There are tons of resources online for free. I love file folder games for my 2 little ones.. here are some places to find free printable folder games:
http://www.preschoolprintables.com/filefolder/filefolder.shtml (they are trying to sell you a disk, but in the yellow on the left are all free)

pre-k/k curriculums to follow or base off of:
www.letteroftheweek.com (already posted for you, great site!)

for specifics google: preschool cutting practice, preschool tracing practice, and anything else you feel the need to cover.

www.starfall.com is great for phonics and alphabet
www.dltk-kids.com has tons of a variety of things
www.learningpage.com is great, you have to join but it's free
www.abcteach.com is a member site, but has tons of free stuff
www.enchantedlearning.com another member site with lots of free stuff
www.schoolexpress.com a member site with lots of free stuff
www.kellyskindergarten.com lots of ideas here!

hope these help some. As far as dd wanting to go to school, they usually want to go because of some fantasy of recess or having a backpack or lunch pail. I humor them, they have their own lunch pails and backpacks and you take a few minute break and call it recess.

I highly recommend The Preschooler's Busy Book and The Toddler's Busy Book They are full of great ideas!! My little girl loved to sit down and do the McGraw Hill 'complete curriculum' books with me, they have them from preschool on up. We bought them at Sam's club for less than $10, lots of great stuff!
