I have NEVER experienced this before. Now, it's been five years since I had my last child, so I am not as young as I once was, but still young enough and not overweight that I thought this would happen. But, it has :banghead: I noticed two days ago while trying to put on my regular black slide on sandals that I've been using the entire pregnancy, my toes wouldn't slide in all the way :( I am so sad, and miserable. I have cankles that look and feel absolutely horrible. My feet don't look or feel normal; like all the circulation is being cut off. I don't know what to do or how to heal them besides sit with my feet up, and I've just got so much crap to do

Anyone have any suggestions? And since it just came on so suddenly should I phone the Dr? Like I said, it just appeared in the last couple of days, and it's getting worse.

Water water water water water! Drink like a fish. And keep your feet up, slightly elevated.

:hugs:

I also suggest putting a call into your OB/Midwife. Could be a sign of high blood pressure.

Rest as much as possible mama.

Call your doc and get a prescription for Sigvaris compression hose, they measure and fit you for them, they really help! Water, lots and lots :)

I had terrible pitting edema for most of my third trimester and tried everything....hydration, elevation, acupuncture, massage, swimming. Unfortunately, nothing helped. Until I gave birth, I had elephant ankles. The only good thing was that it was summer time, so I could wear my Teva sandals (adjustable velcro straps...yayyy!). No other shoes fit me.

Don't panic and call your doctor's after-hours number or anything. Edema is usually just a nuisance...not an emergency. So just put your feet up (and get someone to rub them for you) and call your doc on Monday.

By the way... Sitting in certain positions can exacerbate the problem. I had to avoid hard chairs and be really careful not to cross my legs because both of those things made my swelling even worse.

ETA: Oh! I just saw the PP comment about compression stockings. Yes! I bought a pair of those at Walgreen's and slept in them every night. By morning, my feet looked nearly normal and would stay that way until around noon.

If you KNOW your BP is okay, it's just a nasty little nuisance. I can empathize, I had it *BAD* with my second; touching my ankles was like playing with Jell-O, it was disgusting! Of course now that I'm pre-eclamptic, edema takes on a whole different meaning.

JUST BE SURE your BP is okay.

I didn't get edema until my pregnancy, baby expected 9/4. I had never had it before. I started dandelion, it can help w/ edema as well rise in bp. This time I started it at 32 weeks, at first signs of my ring being tight, no swelling at all now as long as I keep taking it every day. Also eat watermelon, cucumber and drink plenty of water.

I really think that it has to do with the season!! I've had all my babies in Summer/ last one was Sept. The only other thing I'd say that others didn't is put your feet up when you can. (I know an oxymoron with other kids aroind!!) you could always use those stockings that help with it but who wears those in the end of July begining of august??

If your bp is fine, I agree with the PP, COMPRESSION STOCKINGS, and TONS of water (and elevating your feet when possible). Massage is great, a licensed massage therapist is often trained to deal with these issues and can help.

CHECK YOUR BP...even if it means using a machine at a pharmacy, etc. GOOD LUCK!
