so i know we havent been using this vac for a while now. The reason im asking is cause my younger sister got this vaccine, she is almost 17 now. And i have only read like a sentence about this vac and side affects. And from what i remember, it can cause seizures???

See, my sister months ago had a grand mal seizure. A few nights ago she seemed like she had another and last night FOR SURE she had one. So we have been keeping a close eye on her and she had a horrible one just right now. Fire and para already took her to the hospital.

So i need whatever info you ladies have on this DTP vaccine and side affects.

I also remember there being some kind of fund for people who received this vaccine? My parents dont have insurance

I'm so sorry to hear about your sister. I've been looking in my nursing books trying to find answers for you. When did your sister get the vaccine? Did she just recently get the booster shot Tdap? And you're not talking about the DTaP vaccine right? DTaP has been in use since the early 90's so it's likely that your sister might have gotten that one when she was an infant. Seizures are a side effect to watch out for when newly vaccinating someone, but if your sister has not recently had any new vaccinations, it's likely to be caused by something else. :hugs: to you mama

it's illegal to sue vaccine manufacturers for damages, so the government set up the National Vax Injury Compensation Program (http://www.hrsa.gov/vaccinecompensation/) (paid for by fees attached to each vaccine) to pay ppl w/ "proven" vaccine damage. DTP and DTaP are some of the most reactive vaccines. the guidelines for a "proven" reaction are very strict. basically, in one of the studies funded by vaccine manufacturers, they must have noticed the specific reaction (e.g., seizures) caused by the specific vaccine (e.g., DTP) w/i a specific time frame (e.g., 2 day, 1 week, 1 month, etc.). i *think* that seizures are a documented side effect of DTP. i know that encephalitis is a common side effect of the DTP/DTaP, so other neurological problems might be easier to prove w/ that vaccine.

regardless, you should try to help your family and their doctor report the reaction to VAERS (http://vaers.hhs.gov/). it's estimated that >10% of reactions are reported.

here is a list of package inserts (http://www.vaclib.org/chapter/inserts.htm) from the manufacturers. you can look at the insert for the specific shot that was given.

i'm so sorry about your sister. please try to help your family report this. the only way vaccines will be made more safely is if injured families report the damage and try to sue for compensation.

actually, i think that even if you haven't reacted before, you have a good chance of reacting each time you receive a dose of vaccines. some research even shows that risks increase w/ each vax given. (sorry that i don't have the link to that study).
