So, we went to the States without birth certificates and we were fine.
I gave them health cards and the Notice of Registrations and they were fine with them on both sides!

Glad to hear it worked out. I think that most of the time if you have good papers they're good with knowing that you're not trying to screw customs over but that Cdn passport and birth certs are SLOOOOOW. I think they only time we had more than a cursory look at the baby was when there was an amber alert on a missing new born, but ours was 3 months, 20lbs and male so that went fast. ;)
Glad you enjoyed your trip!

Glad it worked out :)
I used to live close to the Ontario border and loved taking day trips before 2001. Now I think I wouldn't risk going over unless I had every document know to humankind :giggle:
Glad to hear though that things don't seem as intense as they were a few years ago!

I guess it just depends on when and where you cross. I'm so jittery about crossing at Sarnia and Windsor -- especially when they make you get out of the car in the middle of the night for a random inspection! and dummy me had no coat on... (this happened with my mom and her van btw) IMO customs at the airport is easier lol.
(We had to have passports for all of us - including my then 6 wk old DD - to fly. It's so crazy... the next time we go she won't look a thing like her picture!)

for the kids even after the new passport law goes into affect you still don't have to have it for the kids. You can still continue to use birth certificates or other form of ID. I live right on the Port Huron-Sarnia border in Michigan so these rules we are very familiar with.
