View Full Version : alternatives to puffs?

DD is 7 months old and is primarily breast fed - she eats one meal in the morning of either a fruit or veggie and i would like to hold off adding a 2nd meal until after i come back from a 5 day trip next month - she is definitely interested in food, particularly when we are eating - i'd like to give her something she can "snack" on when we eat dinner since she sits at the table with us - i like the idea of the puffs but don't like the added sugar and preservatives - any suggestions?

i dont have one at the moment... but i didnt think anything was added to them that the sugar was natural fruit sugar. correct me if im wrong but i coulda swore that was on the box.

great finger foods my daught. eats are:

small pieces of mozerella and cheddar cheese

cherrios, whole wheat bread, rice chex,

bananas, steamed veggies, other fruit that is soft enough

once they can handle it, dried prunes and raisins are great too.

I love the barley teething biscuits from earth's best. Other than that, dd love's big chunks of cantaloupe, banana, carrots.... :)

i just double checked - i have the Gerber Graduate Apple Cinnamon puffs and the 5th ingredient is sugar - followed bu a ton of additives and preservatives

she's still working on the pincer grab so i need something firm - i thought about Cheerios but i'm afraid she'll choke on them since she doesn't have the whole chewing thing down yet - i'll have to check Whole Foods this week and see if i can find anything there - i'll report back if i do

I did cheerios before I did puffs....I would try a couple cheerios and see how she does. you might be surprised ;) Konner LOVEs his cheerios!

Cheerios on her highchair tray are what got DD to perfect her pincer grasp. They become pretty mushy once they get in the mouth, so I've never had a problem with choking. I've never done puffs with DD - don't like the idea of all that sugar and stuff.

Kix are good too, similar to the puffs and less hard than Cheerios.

one of my older ones choked on a kix...they scare me. too round...fit too perfectly.

cheerios are perfect, even come with a little breathing hole. personally that's what I look for in a cereal. breathing holes.:giggle:


no seriously t hough. my 8 month old is working on a pincer grasp and LOVES cheerios(and puffs:blush: though she RARELY gets them). we are trying steamed carrots and soft fruit but she has trouble chewing hte carrots and can't pick up things that are wet like bananas and peaches so cheerios it is. And crackers are too breakable and choke her still because she shoves the whole thing into her mouth. it's a slow process.:giggle:

Cheerios are awesome! My 7 mo. daughter loves them. They bounce when she hits her high chair tray! :-) She doesn't quite have the chewing motion down but she will try to chew and also sucks on them.
Grapes cut into small pieces also work well since they have a harder texture making it easy for them to pick up. I cut the grape into about sixths to be careful the pieces are small enough!

Just a tip that worked for my DD1:
crush up cheerrios until they are a nice smooth powder then roll the bananas in it. They coat the banana enough that they can actually pick it up :giggle:

You can always roll the banana in flax seed or wheat germ for added nutrition and get the same result. DS loves it.

Also I found several great snacks by Earth's Best at Whole Foods.

We get puffs made by Nature's Goodness--- they're sweet potato puffs, and they don't seem to unhealthy to me. Like someone else said, cheerios would be good. We actually walked by a rack of freeze dried fruits and veggies while in Sprouts (grocery store, lots of farmers market items and all natural/organic) and it struck us as obvious! Wow, puffs... but real food! There wasn't anything in them at all, it was just regular food that was freeze dried. They had strawberries, apples, bananas, peas, carrots, etc. DD loves them. They dissolve easily and they have a nice crunch for those whole like to munch.

I don't buy much of any Gerber items because they look really fake and processed and unhealthy... from time to time I'll pick up some of their organic jarred stuff. Especially their "veggie" puffs. It's just a cheeto puff for babies! :roflmbo:

We did Just Tomatoes fruits, cheerios, several Earth's Best snacks (he really loved the graham sticks at around 8mos), tofu cubes, cheese, and fresh fruits (banana and kiwi and other soft stuff rolled in a little wheat germ or crushed cheerios so he could grip them better)

Just to add one more, that I didn't see: Veggie Sticks. I can't remember who makes them off hand, but I get them in our natural foods section. My dd loves them because she can get them into the back of her mouth. They actually seem to be helping to soothe her teething.

Thanks for all the great ideas ladies! I was so sad to see that sugar was in the puffs, wheels, biter biscuits that I was giving my LO. No more. Cheerios it is. And I am going to look for the dried fruit/veggies.

ds loved rice krispies at that age too. He still loves the bananas rolled in rice krispies.

Have you tried Veggie Booty or Pirate's Booty? They are bigger pieces, but you can break them smaller, and they dissolve like poofs.

You gave me some ideas, my dd is allergic to wheat(soy, nuts & dairy too) so cheerios are out, I will be reading a lot of labels in the future, but the jst fruits are a good idea as well as the puffed rice cereal

i give dd rice cakes, heinz has some organic ones and they sog up quickly. she loves em...along with the cereal bars but those have some sugar added of course, they're a treat rather than a snack.

My 8 mth old likes rice cakes. They can be found organic and also salt free. They are pretty basic. We either tear them up or just give her the whole cake.

My ds can't do wheat either, so it's been really hard finding stuff that works without hunting down a healthfood store and spending $8 for a box of crackers. We do rice chex, walmart carries these things called baby mum mum rice rusks, now that he's older they're a little bland for him, but as a babyhe LOVED them. We also don't do nuts, but I can't imagine having to cut out soy and dairy:eek: Good luck mama!
-Also, you really gotta watch the puffed rice, like rice krispies have hidden gluten and a lot of generics process theirs on the same equipment as wheat/soy/nut cereals.
