I am new to DS...what in the world is an Avatar? Is that the picture on the side of the screen that each user can individualize?

Please help...this is so confusing to me!

That's correct. :) If you click on your User CP (http://www.diaperswappers.com/forum/usercp.php), down the left-hand side are all sorts of options you can click on to customize your Diaper Swappers experience. :)
