ok, this maybe a kinda dumb question but none of my others ever liked the baby swing. The baby LOVES it ,seriuosly it is te only way we have been abel to get him to sleep the past 5 months!!! Now, he is almost 6 months old and really looks huge in it!!What ages are they meant to go up to and when is he officially too big for it? What will I do than? Seriuosly, this thing has been a lifesaver! LOL !!
oh, it is a graco open top swing we have...

I don't think age matters as long as they don't exceed the weight limit:goodvibes:

I guess when they get so heavy that it doesn't swing anymore LOL
I am wary of using it as the method to get baby to sleep, but then again, I swore I wouldn't nurse to sleep and that's the only way my four month old can go to sleep.. so I guess its sortof the same thing!! Friends of mine have a 1yo who sleeps inthe swing every night but she's too big now and they don't know what to do. So they're a bit stuck.
I think someone needs to invent a crib that gently swings back and forth or an electric cradle LOL. I googled and found a patent for it, but no product.

as long as you dont exceed the weight limit. our graco swing goes up to 25 lbs. she only loves it when she is watching baby einstein. She can't watch baby einstein in anything else, but she doesnt like the swing for any other reason. lol.

The new Graco luv n hug swings go's upto a 30 pound weight limit. The older style is a 20 pound limit.. Both my girls used the older style til they were about 25 pounds (just over a yr old) w/ no mechanical or safety problems..

We just weaned our DD off the swing not too long ago...at about 5-6 months. It wasn't that she was exceeding the weight limit, but she was squirming quite a bit trying to get out, and she wasn't sleeping as well in it.
I'm proud to say that we have gone from her taking all of her naps in her swing, to 2 naps a day in her crib! I never thought I would see the day!
I'm not sure that we will use the swing for our second lo, just because it does take a lot of work to get them from sleeping in the swing, to sleeping in their crib, or anywhere else!

DD was about 6 months when she was weaned off it. She began to squirm a lot and it made me nervous.

As long as they are within the weight limits and are not coordinated enough to escape it, they should be fine.
DD used it until about 5 months when she quit sleeping in it.
DS 2 takes his 1st and 3rd naps in it right now.

thanks...well I can't find the weight limit as this was a swing bought for my first son so it is older... I am guessing 20 pounds...
He doesn't sleep through the night in it, only naps in the daytime (he sin't a good napper) but he falls alseep on his own for the night(after a full tummy) and sleeps through the night~ yaaa! but he still loves it to chill in during the day and takes short naps in it. DH jokes that the swing is gonna start smoking someday trying to swing him LOL!

The one we had the weight limit was 20lbs. My kids were out of them long before they hit 20lbs though.
By around 4-5 months they'd sit up & start grabbing the bars so we stopped using it. A friend of him had her dd in it at 12months, she was probably close to 30lbs. She said it was the only way she'd sleep, but the thing barely moved becuase of her weight.lol

All of my LOs have been big babies in the 9 lb range, so they were usually too heavy before they were too old. They didn't all love the swing.
But, with my youngest DS, he had an extended stay in the hospital and had trouble settling down and sleeping in the first 6 months. So, he would either nurse to sleep/co-sleep or sleep in the swing. The older he got, the slower the swing would go, but he wasn't trying to get out. I began weaning him from sleeping in the swing to the crib about 5-6 months. I did it by gradually slowing the speed down when he was sleeping in it to the point where it was not moving at all and he would stay asleep.
I think are the main concerns: weight (for swing function and safety) and age/development (the possible ability to get out and get hurt and need the to be free to move about and develop motor skills.) I definitely don't want to come across as anti-swing and get into that whole can of worms. :giggle: Just pointing out that babies often make developmental progress when they have that time in their crib or the floor to move about and try out new skills.

Ds2 stayed in his swing forever! He was 9 lbs when he was born, but just over 20 when he turned a yr. He was not a very snuggly baby, he didn't mind being held but when he was tired he wanted to be left alone either in his swing or crib. Even when we coslept he would squirm away from us. He never tried to escape his swing, he just sat in it and watched the world go by. After he turned 1, he would sit in his outside baby swing on the outside swingset. If we tried to take him out of it he would get all hysterical and try to climb back in. He's still a pretty mellow little guy. We figured he wasn't spending ALL day in it, he still used the exersaucer/crawled/creeped so no reason to wean him from it until he was either too big or decided he didn't like it anymore.

My son actually used his swing until he was a little more than a year old. :giggle: He didn't use it for a few months, but then when he got more mobile, around 9 months maybe, he starting climbing back into it. We finally got rid of it when he outgrew the weight limit.

My daughter used her swing until she was 8 months old. She loved her swing. (she was small)

I have older dds and the 'old' swings that you wind up were AWESOME for lasting forever!:giggle: My dd3 loved the swing sooooooooooo much that she was in it at 2 years old! She honestly could climb in and out by herself!:giggle2: :roflmbo: We had taken it away, but she screamed bloody murder. I need to find our albums because I have pictures of her in it and her feet DRAGGING the ground! :roflmbo: :roflmbo: She finally gave it up when she realized her little friends didn't still swing.
The swings now days {the papasan} we have, is BARELY rocking our 5 month old. I like the old swings better as far as holding babies, but hated winding them up every 10 minutes!:giggle:
I agree with what pp said, if it is still rocking safely.. your lo is okay in it. The swing we have won't last much longer with Egan, but he doesn't like the swing anyway. He & my oldest dd were the only ones who could care less about a swing.

IMO that swing will not last you too much longer, babies tend to grab the bars on the side stopping the swing, if you have the one I thinking of.
That said, my dd is 15 mo and 23 lbs and spends most naps in the swing, we have the fisher price papasan swing, its much less restricting as far as shape, and it swings from side to side. It HAS been a lifesaver for us, as dd doesnt always want us to hold her to sleep, but doesnt want us to lay her down either. We got our on craigslist for $70.
I dont know what we'll do when she outgrows it!! I guess we'll figure out something!

Yea the weight limit is what's important. Most are somewhere between 20-30 lbs. I'd check yours. My DD was in hers all the way up until she was almost 1 (lol, yea she looked really awkward in it) once she was almost at the weight limit we put it upstairs where she couldn't use it and she was fine.
