Hey there Kansas City, MO area mamas! I'm from La. and I'm moving your way next month. I'd love any great info you have about the area. We'll be moving to the Parkhills school district area.

We lived just across the Park Hill/Platte Co. R-III dividing line on the Platte Co. side for a year. Park Hill schools are nice and they get high marks.
You'll be close to Zona Rosa (TCP, Gap, ON & Marshalls...plus they are building a Dillards in there right now, and there is a Coldstone in there...yum!) and tons of food places. The airport is close, but not close enough to be annoyingly loud. There are 2 Target stores within 10 minutes, and another two within 20 minutes. There is a Walmart across the highway from Zona Rosa. The Legends (outdoor outlet mall) is across the street from KS Speedway and about 25 minutes away...lots of good stores out there too.
HappyBottomus is out in Lee's Summit, but that's quite a haul...close to an hour away....I haven't felt the need to make the trek out there yet.
My DS#2 went to preschool at Platte Woods Methodist church and we loved the program, but ended up switching when we moved to Liberty as it was too far of a drive for a half-day program.
Another nice area to look at if you haven't already bought a house/signed a lease is Liberty...that's where we are now and we love it here.

We visited Zona Rosa when we were out there looking for houses. The house we want is in Brittany Oaks just near there. We also looked in Smithville. We were going to look in Liberty but just ran out of time. Seeing as we are in Louisiana we can't just pop back up there to look around some more, so I think we're going to have to settle on one of those to areas for now. I hear Liberty is great though. Our realtor lives there and we had houses to look at there but just didn't get to it. I think we'll be happy anywhere up there from what I saw. It just looks great!
We'll be happy about moving up to better schools too.

I know there was a mama in my MOPS group last year that put together a big enough class to have a Kindermusik group here in Liberty, she didn't teach it, but she got it set up and brought in a Kindermusik teacher because there was enough interest...I don't know if it's still going or if they didn't start back up after the summer.
I also don't know if there is anyone on your side of town either...you could post on Craigslist on the baby/kids section and see...sometimes stuff like that gets flagged (massive eye roll) but most of the time the normal people leave it alone so that you can get feedback.

Smithville is a nice area, just too small and too far away from everything for my liking...we did consider looking up there too when we bought, but never found anything that really suited us.
We do go camping up there quite frequently though at Smithville Lake.
If you want more info on Liberty, I can help you out in that aspect...I love our subdivision...we're in Northbrook (Trails)...our subdivision has so many kids that we have our own elementary school that was built 5 years ago.

That's kind of what I thought about Smithville. We're about that distance from anything now so I wanted to be closer to the city for a while. Just for the change. So I preferred KC. How far is Liberty from the city? I was under the impression it was a distance like Smithville. I wish we had had more time to look in Liberty as we had planned. We haven't settled on anything so maybe we should look up some things. Dh is going back up there the first wk of Nov.

It takes me about 25 minutes to get over to Zona Rosa, *but* Liberty has a bunch of stuff right here too. There is a Target & Walmart within 5 minutes of my house, and in the same shopping plaza as Target there is Kohl's, TJMaxx, and a shoe store. Then in the little out crop shops in front, Payless, a party supply store, Beauty Brands, and a bunch of other little stores. There is also a Lowe's & Home Depot and a Michaels, Linens & Things & a PetSmart? in there as well.
There are also a bunch of restaurants in that same area. If you use Google Maps and put in NE Barry Rd & Church Rd, Liberty MO and switch to the satellite view you can see the "main" corridor of shopping in Liberty, though there is also quite a bit if you go down 291 as well (scroll to the east, and then a little bit south).
We also just passed a bond to start building a new high school as well.
Really all along the 152 corridor it's getting built up so from I-35 over to I-29 along 152 there is all kinds of stuff along there...I rarely go south of the river.
Plus, from Liberty it's like 25-30min out to Independence Mall (not the greatest mall, but it's got the right stores for me).
