We're ready to move DD1 to a real bed, leaving us with decisions for both her new mattress and the crib for DD2.

Crib mattress: 8 or 9 years old, standard Target or Walmart mattress. The vinyl covering is a little stiff and ripped in a few places. As I understand it, the stiffness indicates that the pthalates are gone. On the other hand, it's definitely old and breaking down. (DD1's jumping on it didn't help!) I don't want to spend $500 on an organic mattress. I like the BabeSafe mattress cover idea, but would it do any good against the old-mattress issues? Should I get a new mattress and the cover? If you wanted to spend only $100-$150, what would you do?

"Toddler" bed mattress: It needs a twin or full. (I haven't checked which yet.) I'll be buying new. Since this mattress will be used for many years, I'm willing to spend a little more, maybe $300. But I'd be glad to spend just $150 if it would be safe! In that range, what would you buy in terms of mattresses and/or covers?

Thanks, mamas!
