Title says it all. YDS will be 1 in a little over 6 weeks *sniff sniff* and I want to get him used to taking a sippy. He'll take a bottle no problem (he's been EBF) but has no clue what to do when I hand him a sippy. I've tried several - is there one that is better for breastfed babes? And how do I get him used to drinking from it, holding it correctly, etc.
My older son (who was bottlefed formula from 2 weeks on) never did use a sippy cup correctly until well over 2.5 years old. I don't know, maybe being sippy-challenged is genetic:giggle2:

You're trying a sippy at 6 weeks old?

When my kids' were around 6 months old I started a Nuby sippy with them. The soft spout seemed to help.....

No. He'll be 1-year-old in six weeks. His birthday is February 28th:)

i started with the nubby soft ones. they worked fine never had a issue when we stashed the bottles away. i think they are a good transition. that was the only way she would drink her milk. we uses other cups now but shes much older new.

I second the nuby sippys. There are ones that are bpa and stuff free. They have large handles and most importantly ... don't leak! The spouts are soft and my granddaughter (who will be one in 2 weeks) loved hers from the start. (Adiri bottle fed tho')
Soft Landing has some reviews and info on them and I emailed her for advise and she was great. (I was looking for a soft spout b/c M didn't like the hard ones.)

The nubbies are great for kids struggle to move from a bottle to cup, but it can be hard to wean from the nubby...and it acts much like a bottle to the teeth....bathing them in the milk (juice etc)

I prefer to try a soft spout sippy with the valve removed, to make it like the old "tommy tippies" so them learn to hold it and "pour" into their mouth.

Obviously the unvalved cup will leak, so once they are "good" at it and you need more spill control, you can add the valve back....although we recommend only water in a cup that is being carried around....milk at meals in the highchair and before bedtime teeth brushing. (all these recs are in the name of oral health:))

My ebf babes hated sippy's and went right to the Playtex insulated straw cups. It only has about an inch of soft straw sticking out and they knew right what to do with it. The best for them was that it didn't have to be tilted. Packaging says 2+ but our pedi actually recommended it.

Also when these are snapped closed they are 100% spill proof. I do *not* recommend the straw cups that are domed on top, they always spill for us!

I forgot to mention the nubby it only being used with water.
Good to know about the straw cups. :)

i hate sippys. my ds is learning cup now, to be weaned in 2 mo... straight to the cup... no straw no lid. Of course he won't be able to use that right away on his own, but I wasn't going to allow him to carry it around anyway.

We tried a ton of different sippies with my kiddo before we figured out that only straw cups would work. He just couldn't understand that he needed to tip the sippy to get the liquid out. With a straw cup, he just needs to suck....and he's definitely an old pro when it comes to that. ;)

We like the Gerber Cool Twisties cup because the straw is soft, it has very few parts to keep clean, and it flows easily. But it leaks like crazy when its tipped on its side so its really inconvenient for taking drinks with us when we're on the go. The straw cup I keep in the diaper bag is a Nuby "Flip It". LO doesn't like it as much because it has a bite-valve straw, so its tricky to get liquid out. But it doesn't leak, so its better for when we travel.

Oh, and both the cups I mentioned are BPA free and cheap (under $5).

Yeah, that was the issue we had with my older son. We tried every kind of sippy out there and in the end we just ended up going with straw cups. I think we may have to do the same with my lil guy too because he doesn't understand to tip the sippy.

we like the avent ones because you can take out the internal valve that makes it so you have to suck or not. at first we had to sit DS in our lap as if giving him a bottle and use the sippy WITHOUT the valve and pour it in slowly so he got the idea that stuff comes outta there!! then once he associated seeing the cup with drinking water, we've put the valve in and he LOVES it and it doesn't spill. he is 9.5 months and we only use the sippy for water. he still gets milk from a bottle. hope this helps.

My son did great w/ the straw cups.....my 2 daughters just took a long time to figure out how to drink out of the straws.

We haven't had any leak issues w/ the nuby sippies.

I like the Avent too. A couple of my kids had a hard time using a sippy until I got them one of those. Once they figured it out and got used to it, they could use the other sippies we had, which were Gerber.

Hmm we have tried so many! Klean Kanteen, Foogoo (Thermas), Gerber, Playtex (sippy) and a bunch more I think I will check out the Nuby for water and the straw ones for milk and stuff - I think my DS just doesn't like cows milk though, he's not allergic or anything I think he just doesn't like the taste..anyways it's something I'm looking into to - not just for weaning (he's 10 months) but for while we're out and stuff - he's never had a bottle and he won't take a sippy which means no dates nights for us yet  :giggle2: I think the straw willwork well I had a spill proof sports bottle for my DD it was awesome but I haven't seen them in years...

We use the avent sippies, with the white soft tips. They look like rocket ships and dd seems to like them better than the graduates one we tried before.

Dd loves her Nuby soft spout cups. She also has a Munchkin one and they are about the same, except the Nuby ones have a lid.

My daughter hates sippys. So we went to straws. The Thermos Foogo has a soft straw and keeps liquids cold for 12 hours. It maybe a little heavy for him, but you can try it. We really like it. Straws are great for language development too. They help strengthen the tongue. So a little added advantage as well. You could also try something like a Sigg bottle. It has a sport top spout. My friend's son loves that.

The Safe Sippy without the valve worked well for my 1 yr old. They are easy to clean and indestructible.

We got the Nuby one with the straw first. I washed it, filled it with water and took a drink out of it (to see how it worked) Well, you have to bit on the straw and when I did get some water out, it tasted AWFUL and noticed that even though I washed it, it smelled SOOO strong of plastic. That's going back!
We ended up getting a Thermos funtainer (has a straw top). My DS is 6 months old and he LOVES it!! btw, I found it at wal-mart for 9.99 and it was in the kitchen stuff.

I would recommend the cup my 15 mo. old loves that i introduced to him at 11 mo., but even though i read that it didn't have bpa's in it, it actual does, argh you gerber. going straight to a hard spout at 12 mo. worked for us, it took him a while to get used to it, about two weeks and he was a pro.

has lots of bpa free sippys, the most economical is the playtex one, it's what I'll be replacing my gerber hard spout sippy with.

I love Playtex. The Nubys we have are so soft, DS always squishes his nose in right at the air hole. I'm always pulling it back out as the whole top dents in. We have one Gerber from a garage sale- it is always loosing the valve, what a pain. I don't use it anymore!

the only sippy my daughter can figure out is the born free.
