View Full Version : How to you store your kitchen knives and sharp objects?

When Ds was 22 months he reached over the gate that blocked off the kitchen and pulled out a pizza cutter that was in the drawer next to the gate. He ended up falling on it and cut his hand pretty bad and had to get stitches. Well since then we put all sharp knives and pizza cutter in another drawer away from the gate and they are not aloud in the kitchen unless we are in there with them. Anyway we are thinking about moving into a house and it has an open kitchen so it has no way to be blocked off. So my question is how do you keep your kids safe? I thought I heard some where that foster homes have to keep them locked up any idea of how this would work? photos would be helpful. Thanks

Most of our sharp knives, cutters, etc. were purchased from pampered chef, so they come with a sleeve that we use for storage. We also put child locks on the drawer where they are kept. Otherwise, the steak knives are kept on the back corner of a counter little hands can't reach.

We have ours in a drawer with a lock on it, but the lock is a piece of crap and she can get the drawer open more often than not, so I will also be watching this thread. The lock we have are these Safety First drawer locks, btw. http://www.safety1st.com/product/detail.asp?ID=2769

I have child locks on all drawers and cupboards that my DD (aged 3) can reach. I keep my knives either in the knife block at the back of the counter, or else on a magnetic strip on the wall, hidden behind canisters.

We have a combo of child locks, protective sleeves (not that Id rely on this, but some have them) and a butcher's block up on the counter pushed into a corner away from the edge. The ones in the drawers are way in the back in their sleeves behind the rolling pin, including pizza cutters, apple corers, peelers, zesters, etc. basically anything sharp. Our kitchen is wide open also, so its all child proofed (stove covers, door covers, no cleaning supplies in reach).

ETA- We also don't rely on child proofing alone over adult supervision. Little ones are never left alone unattended here, even with locks & baby gates.

In a knife block behind the sink and some single knives on top of the microwave and small paring knives in a drawer with a baby latch on it.

I have never had a problem with my kids getting into drawers and getting knives (M&M's, yes, knives, no lol). But I was thinking about this and I think perhaps should I have a problem, I would try keeping them in a higher cabinet instead of in a drawer.

You gotta go the the bathroom sometime. Thanks for all the helpful ideas. We do not leave our children unattended but sometimes accidents happen. Children are quick.

I just keep it all in the drawer with the silverware. Neither of my boys were ever the kind to get into stuff so I really didn't have to do any kind of baby proofing. I'll let DS2 (age 3.5) use a steak knife under supervision, they are pretty dull though. I guess I want to teach them how to properly use things. Forbidden things IMO are more interesting to children.

My kids follow me to the bathroom, I only wish I could go alone :giggle: I wasn't implying that the drawer was deliberately left there for him to get into, just that not all baby proofing is 100% reliable, esp with dangerous sharp things and especially curious ones at that.. DS2 has learned that he can still open the cabinets with locks, just an inch or two. Then that inch or two is just enough for his little arm to get in there! Now I have to keep everything a toddler's arm length back into the cabinets although they're secure with 'child proof' locks.

DD comes to the bathroom with me. Everytime. I don't know what I'll do when we have 2 of them. I don't think three of us would fit in the downstairs bathroom :giggle2:

So far she has only gotten into the bottom cupboards, not the drawers. So I am watching for ideas!

we put ours in the cupboard above the dishwasher in a plastic dish, the kids can't climb up their because we have a fishtank on that small counter area so no way of them getting into the knives.

My 15 month old comes to the bathroom with me, accidents can happen in the couple minutes you're not there. They seem to sense when they're not being watched and use that time for maximum trouble ;) My older son is 5 though, so I trust him not to go play with dangerous things, and fortunately only need to take one with me.

When we had kids, we got rid of all loose sharp objects, cutters, knives, scissors, and bought an all in one system with one of the wood blocks that holds everything. It holds all the knives, 2 pairs of scissors and a pizza cutter, and is compact enough that it can go in the back of the sink, in the very corner so it's even further, and freecycled all the loose objects we had beforehand. Then we have a gate that blocks the kitchen, then we don't leave him out of our site, even just a few minutes. I have a box of toys in the upstairs bathroom so that he can sit and play while I need him to.

We put ours in the small cabinet above the stove, pushed back a bit. All knives, scissors, sharp objects go there.
