My DD is one week shy of 18 months and she is still having lots of trouble with solid food. She loves to put things in her mouth and chew them but there are few things that she actually swallows (poi, refried beans, soft fruit). It is getting even harder because she is getting to the age where she wants to feed herself and the easy to swallow stuff is hard for her to do since she has to use a spoon.
I really want to work on weaning her because there is a medication that I need to take that I cannot take while we are nursing. I don’t feel like I can wean her until she has the eating solids thing down. Has anyone ever heard of this type of problem? She only has five teeth so far. I wonder if that is related.

have you looked up the medication at safefetus.com? not like i know what medication you need, but i do know that many women are misinformed about what they can take or not take.
there is a solids forum right below the formula feeding forum ;)

Shortage of teeth is definately a factor. DD had a difficult time until her molars came in. Definately tell your ped. Sometimes it is a physical issue. Could be a texture issue.

When did you start to introduce solids that she could self feed, and how aggressively did you go about it? If she hasn't been encouraged with them for long, it only makes sense that she's not doing well yet.
I'd try and offer her things that you know she likes and can eat, and continue to offer lots of variety of things she's not used to eating. That's really all you can do. It sounds like she still needs to nurse.

I agree with a previous poster.... Have you looked the medication up in Hale's?
