i couldnt help but start the thread already. with the friday the 13th remake commercials and all. i just love old school spook flicks.

anyway... come join all us basic mamas... we dont bite... we use all sorts but mostly pfs and wool, but strive for nirvana. we dont jump on to the next and hottest trend. well maybe wool, but we usually make it ourselves.

well all is peaceful and quiet in the mamazluv nest. only the sound of dh and the dog snoring... so i am off now to join the choir...

gnite.

It's today at my house but I'm still on yesterday too. I'm sitting here crocheting the second dishtowel out of some cotton yarn I got from Freecycle and I'm going to bed when it's done. I had to get a costume for my niece ready for school tomorrow. It was a skirt my sister made probably 22 or so years ago; it needed the elastic around the waist replaced and the hem redone. (I had a skirt just like it that I made but it's threadbare from so much wear. I talked my mom into giving me my sister's skirt; I was going to make a pillow case out of it, I think I still will.) They are doing a "wax museum" style performance tomorrow where you stand there like a wax figure until someone comes and pushes a "button" and then you talk. She's portraying the wife of an African-American soldier who fought in the American Revolution. She did a posterboard of information about the soldier but is going to portray his wife in the wax museum. Her skirt is all ready and the shirt she's going to wear with it was missing two buttons so I fixed that.

Have a wonderful morning ladies.

ETA: Here's her outfit for school tomorrow, not gonna show you the dishtowels!

Hi all! It's only 10 pm here, but happy Friday! I can't wait. I kept thinking it was Friday today. Ugh. Anyway. I should get to bed soon. I've been trying to go to bed early all week. So much for that. Hope everyone gets a good night's rest! I won't be on much tomorrow. We're going to a Valentine's Day party a friend's house and then to my mom's for the day. Happy Friday the 13th!

How cool! I love the wax museum idea.

It is getting harder to talk in code around the kids. We used to talk in Spanish, but they've been watching a lot of Dora and #1 can figure out what we are talking about half the time. She got very excited when I was trying to tell DH I bought some 5 gallon paint buckets to start a container vegetable garden for the kids. Wanted to know if I bought one for each of them, and could she see the bucket. :roflmbo:

Now DH wants to talk in Dutch around them. I haven't tried to speak Dutch in four years, and I didn't know all that much even then. Oy.

Ha! My parents progressed from spelling everything out to finger-spelling things in ASL, and when my sister and I figured that one out I think they gave up and just waited until we weren't around. DH and I use Farsi for our "secret language" around family, but I want to use it around DS so that he picks up at least a little bit.

My sister has a "family closet" Meaning they have converted one bedroom in their house to a closet. After her current remodel it will actually have the washer and dryer in it as well. Everything is hung except undies and socks and those go in bins labeled with the persons name. The room is lined with shelving and hanging bars and the lower ones are fort he shorter kids.
It is the coolest idea ever and makes her laundry and getting kids ready chores so much eaiser.

Such a cool idea. I'll have to keep that in mind for when we eventually own our own home again...free gubment housing is awesome financially but not so personalize-able.

Hi ladies. No time to read, really. Still in the sixth level of Dante's English Language Proficiency Testing Hell.

Nice thing about switching jobs next year... I won't be the person who has to do all these speaking tests.

:yuck: That definitely sounds like a PITA. Glad you won't have to deal with it next year. Congrats on the first 5%! :yay: Maybe if we made it a challenge like that DH and I would be better about sticking to the exercise.

Jennifer, :hugs: Sorry about the crazy day, I hope today is better! I can't believe they specified brand-name snacks either, that's really bizarre.

Ok yarnies...Michaels has been printing 40 and 50% off coupons like crazy, so I take that as a sign to collect slowly wool yarn for someone to knit me some woolies this summer for fall/winter. How many skeins do I need? He wears between a small/medium now, I assume he will be medium long in the fall (he's 80% height/20% weight consistently) and I might want hats to go with. Are there brands that are better than others that you can get at Michaels?

I second Paton's, and if they carry Cascade yarns those are good as well. I think the Paton's I got just said 100% wool or something, but I can't remember. It was worsted weight. For medium/large longies you'll need about 260-300 yards depending on inseam and such, but it's always better to have a bit more to have a safety net and to use for a drawstring and such. I would buy a few set's worth in coordinating colors and then you can use the leftovers to make scrappies!

anyone know what kind of soap is used in wool wash bars? I tinkering with making some if anyone is interested in trying it...that and some new art things :hide:

well I'm gonna put diaper laundry in the dryer and then head off to bed...won't be on too much tomm. they are cutting us off from the web at work  oh well I really need to get some work done there tomm

this weekend is my niece's party which I still have to get a gift for and then Valentine's day with the kids and bf....I also have some craft projects to work on this weekend and want to pick up some yarn to crochet something...

well goodnight all..or maybe not since the baby is screaming again...can they reverse cycle at 14 mos old?!

I dunno about wool wash bars...I know they have lanolin in them but I don't kow what sort of soap. I would imagine maybe a vegetable-based one like castile? :dunno: That sucks about internet at work...I didn't have internet access at work for three or four years, and I hated it.

:wave2: hi ladies! am I too late to join the Thursday chatter? By my clock I have 7 mins. :giggle:

Hi! I usually end up posting on the previous day's thread when it's already the next day here, so I say it's never too late to join. :giggle2:

UGh. #1 kept waking and calling for her daddy all night, saying this hurt and that hurt and he'd go tell her to go back to sleep. Finally, around 4am I got up and told her to get in bed with us before she woke up the other two, and she was burning up! 102.5 fever! I don't know how DH missed that. Anyway, she took Tylenol 45 min ago and she still has 100 temp, guess I'll have to break out the Motrin in an hour or so if it doesn't improve and alternate between them. She otherwise doesn't look that bad, but she's not normally up this early so something's amiss. Just hope it's not flu or something and that it doesn't spread to everyone else.

Thanks everybody about the yarn recommendations. That would be my first guess, Pattons, but I haven't been to a Michaels in a long time so I don't know what they carry. I've actually been eyeing the Lion fisherman's wool too for a long time, wanting some cream cable knit longies, but it also comes in a couple of other natural colors too. I was hoping to get a peek at them this weekend, but if at least one kid is sick, that's not likely because Michaels is a good half hour away. DH is good but not THAT good, LOL.

Good EARLY morning. It's 6:30 here. I had to get up early to make sure my house was in order. After homeschool co-op a mom and her kids are coming over for a little while.

LLUBI Premiums are as prepped as I'm gonna get them...8 wash and dries :phew: . The first one is on her bum as she likes to get up early too and I couldn't wait to try one on her. :giggle: Took me a few tries to find a good way to put it on. Harder to do when you're tired

Well, I need to go clean my bathrooms & empty the dishwasher, etc.

Michelle what nice thing to do for your neice! Sounds like a great play.

Michelle ,love the costume! She's going to do great!

Melissa, nothing like brand new PFs! Wahoo!

Well, the motrin did the trick. #1's temp is almost normal. So I guess that's what she'll be taking today. Hopefully the rest of us won't get whatever it is she has. She can't tell me if anything else is wrong, she has a slight cough and some drainage...I just don't want this to turn into the flu!

Cheryl, :hugs: sorry to hear that your dd is sick. Hopefully it's not contagious and she's feeling better soon!

So last night was our first night of trying to teach DS to go back to sleep at night without nursing every time. We were medium successful, but I'm dreading the next two nights. I put him down to bed at 7:15 as he was exhausted, and he slept until 11:30, when two wrong-number or telemarketer calls in a row woke him up (the downside of having VoIP). It took me over an hour to get him to go back to sleep, but he did without nursing. He woke up again at 1:45 but quieted down before we even made it to his room. Then he woke again at 3, DH tried to get him to go back to sleep but after a little while I felt bad and nursed him. That'll show me...he didn't really nurse much, and still cried when I put him into his crib. DH stepped in and got him to go back to sleep in under 5 minutes. DS woke up again at 5, and again DH got him to go right back to sleep in just a couple of minutes. I'm not sure if it was because it was me or because it was the first time it happened in the night, but I'm afraid that with DH gone for the next two nights DS is not going to want to go back to sleep for me. :nervous:

Other than that, not much happening around here today as I'm too tired to do much of anything. I started a new pair of longies for DS out of this blue heathered wool yarn that I'm hoping will look sort of like jeans (a la Cheryl's blue jean longies!), so we'll see how those go.

You know, the first time I saw them I thought they were crocheted, but then when I saw the horizontal ribs I wasn't sure. My grandma and great grandma both crocheted a lot, and I thought I remembered some patterns like that but I couldn't be sure. The only afgans I have that they made do not have any stitches like that.

Well, with #1 sick, all plans are up in the air. I do have 2 pints of strawberries wating for their chocolate caramel coating, but I don't know that I'll get to do it today. And personally I dread it when Vday, Mother's Day, or any other holiday that people eat out for falls on a weekend because it makes it impossible to eat out anywhere because it's too crowded, and it will make doing errands and grocery shopping hard too. I don't mind staying home and having a romantic night in, but not being able to get stuff done is annoying.

What's a smocked dress? (I'm slow if you can't tell sorry ) my girls own tons of dresses and when the summer ones get too short to be regular dresses they were them as longer babydoll style shirts with capri/shorts...the winter ones we do the same with and this year we actually haven't worn tights at all just dresses with leggings/pants....everyday for DD3...except today because the shirt and sweater shrug she has on came with a skirt w/ shorts underneath that I would not let her wear over her pants this morning...what a mean mom!

Steph I'd try to help (even though I've never stalked before) but DS is still very needy and clingy so that means my schedule is unpredictable today.

What's a smocked dress? (I'm slow if you can't tell sorry ) my girls own tons of dresses and when the summer ones get too short to be regular dresses they were them as longer babydoll style shirts with capri/shorts...the winter ones we do the same with and this year we actually haven't worn tights at all just dresses with leggings/pants....everyday for DD3...except today because the shirt and sweater shrug she has on came with a skirt w/ shorts underneath that I would not let her wear over her pants this morning...what a mean mom!

here (http://cgi.ebay.com/Vive-La-Fete-Ducks-Yellow-Bishop-Smocked-Dress-NWT-4_W0QQitemZ130286285474QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_Defau ltDomain_0?hash=item130286285474&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50)is one example

so ladies, let's chat about smocked dresses :giggle: anyone like them?

:headscratch: what's a smocked dress look like? i've seen some pretty cute dresses in craft chat that have a tshirt/onesie on top with a cute design sewn on bottom. Is that it? If so I LOVE those!!!! I want to try and make Caitlin's summer dresses when I get my sewing machine.

:hugs: I'm sorry your LO is sick. Hopefully she gets better soon.

Ok, its so early i cant even type good! lol we are headed out for the day. Its ski trip day :yay: I hope you all have good fridays today!! Check back tonight :hugs:

Have fun today! :goodvibes:

It sounds like your DS isn't needing to night nurse so much as he needs the comfort. Hopefully he sleeps for you while your DH is gone :goodvibes:

Yay for new PFs :lostit:

Hi ladies, I miss you!

I ran a fever all day Wednesday and Thursday. Gross gross. And now my fever seems to be gone, but I have a terrible headache. I'm currently sipping a Coke hoping the caffeine will help and I have a heating pad on my neck. Hopefully I'll be back to chatting with you soon!

We miss you too! I hope you feel better soon! :hugs:

Well blast. Curses, blast, dang it. (Trying to stay family friendly while expressing my frustration :giggle: ). I forgot that the reason DH and his buddies picked this weekend for their golf trip is that its a three day weekend. Which means three nights alone with the crazy screaming teething night-waking monster formerly known as Stephen. :brat: :hairpull: :fit:

*deep breath*

Okay, so he's really not THAT bad, but I am that tired. Sigh.

Speaking of mamas we haven't heard from in a while, has anyone heard from Mel (Lemurmommies)?

Yeah, I don't really get how that works either...I think HC emails you an invoice, and then you pm that invoice # to me, and then I use that info to pay for the item... Worse case scenario I will send you some paypal to pay for it, and then you can put in the comments box to ship it to me (I will give you my shipping info)... I mean, people do it all the time right? There's gotta be a way it works out easily. There is a question about it on extra fluffy right now...

I've wondered about that myself. :dunno:

And stalking...sorry we'll be out today. Maybe I can help next time. And I've always wondered how it worked. I always figured the person that scored it just paid and then the person that wanted them reimbursed them. Hmm...maybe there's another way.

I've noticed a trend when they go, it's usually: one or more of three things:
They have a NB or a WAHM business that gets them incredibly busy
They get sucked into the woolie threads (especially the knitter/crocheter's threads) and don't have time for basics anymore
They reach stash nirvana with basics, then stay off DS altogether to keep it that way. No temptation to mess with a good thing that way.

And I think a few fall out of basics and go back to fitteds/pockets/AIOs as their primary, and don't feel like they can post here. Which I wish they would still, because I miss them too. To me that's no different than taking a sposie break, stuff happens and you need to use what works at the time.

I just don't understand how things get paid for :headscratch: like if I stalk for someone and win how does the seller get paid....

Christina~from what I can tell the longies are crocheted....I  crochet...I'm getting some yarn this weekend to crochet something for the baby and maybe a few amigurami animals for the big guys....my son saw a few yesterday on a WAHM wares thread that he was :drif: over....I also have a free pattern from Walmart for a frog and a princess....on that note if you post pics of the blanket that you have that needs to be fixed I may be able to help with that depending on what needs to be done...I can do basic stuff and my mom and my bf's mom can do the more complicated things....not sure if anyone saw in the extra fluffy forum there was a skirty that was crocheted and the actual skirt part of it was made up of a bunch of small fan shaped ruffles...my bf's mom made DD3 an entire baby blanket out of those tiny fans! and then made a super thick blanket for the baby for winter out of another pattern and the ruffle around the edge! I maybe able to get pics of the girls blankets this evening...

well off to work..talk to you ladies later!

You know, I wonder how many people fell out of their daily threads just because they got moved to a sub-forum? It's not like DS made any attempts to notify people where all the threads went. Some of the basics mamas could only post infrequently, and if you weren't in the loop on that you might think the threads just stopped due to inactivity.

I was a pocket user before I found the PF love. I've held onto all of mine. I find that on days when I need a break or a change I use them. I have started stuffing them with my PFs though. So much better than the stinky MF.

i didnt use to like the way they looked, but as i started looking... and the patterns look fairly simple. i dont want to buy one right now, but i may play around w putting a skirt on a soaker.... i will let you know how it turns out. since i did that white one i have done three others. so it does go a lot faster for me, and it seems that a crochet stitch is much bigger than a knitted one, so that would have to make it faster, not to mention that i really cant knit.

Morning ladies! Snow day today. I got the phone call that they called off school just as I was getting ready to head out the door. Normally they call off sooner than that, and I wanted to leave early since it's a 25 mile drive on a road that doesn't always get plowed well.

Instead, today I'm doing:
-Diaper laundry (had to be done anyway) - in the dryer
-Decluttering spare room (some more!) - major work-in-progress
I listed one of my old sewing machines on Freecycle and had three people interested in less than an hour. I have another old one to get rid of, but my parents bought it and I want the ok from them first. Both have cabinets, but the one I'm gifting right now will have to sit on the cabinet rather than in it. I just e-mailed the lady who is getting it, but she is in bed as she works nights so we'll see if she still wants it in spite of that minor defect.
-Finish making longies for girls for tomorrow....valentine's fleece sets
-Taking Sadie to play in the snow outside

WOTB: Sadie - nothing since she wet her panties :(, Amelia is still in her night-time sposie I think. She slept 6 hours straight last night after eating a jar and a half of babyfood for supper. I think I'll be more diligent about giving her babyfood at night.

I can post pics of what mine look like after they are pinned if that helps...I can try to explain it as well but don't have a step by step pininng tutorial...it is so difficult to get her to lay still to take a pic after it is done...no chance of pics while I'm doing it...I would have the kids take a pic but when I say take the pic..they always say now? like no, 10 mins ago, yes now! and then it is too late!

I'm logged into HC and will let you know what happens Steph....

As for pockets...we use them for daycare and Daddy and the dreaded other...you know like when you are feeling sick, lazy or nothing else is clean :giggle2: BUT they are always stuffed with flats and prefolds...the inserts weren't working and I found them the other day in a box in the nursery  must list...I have a huge habit of holding on to things instead of letting go of what doesn't work...:hide:

Good morning, mamas! Good grief, it's only 8:15 here and there's already almost 90 posts in here. :giggle2: You mamas have been chatty today! fun!

WOTB: gmd dark brown under a bsww

So, I'm thinking of hosting a cloth diaper party for the mamas at my church. I'd just love to tell them why I love cloth so much, how it can save them money, healthier, etc... Doesn't that sound like fun??

WOTA:
Clean bathroom
laundry
groceries
cook chicken for pot pie (that's WFD)

That sounds like a lot of fun! Great job on the costume :)

:nervous:

I hope it goes well for you!

I'm so sorry you're not feeling well :hugs: Hopefully the caffeine and heat pad will take care of your headache!

so ladies, let's chat about smocked dresses :giggle: anyone like them?

I think they're stinkin' adorable!!

I think A is on a nursing strike. She will latch on for a few sucks then push me away screaming and crying. Her first tooth cut through last week, so I'm guessing that's the culprit. I just want it to be over and I'm paranoid about my supply drying up.

sara, i know a completely different situation. the mom was seriously on coke while pg. the girl was born fairly "normal" but when she became the age to sit, crawl, stand, walk, she didnt. they discovered it was a birth defect. they said she would never accomplish anything other than sitting, and maybe crawling. but with intensive pt and a VERY determined gma, she is now 16 and lives a very normal life. she walks with a slight limp/gait, but unassisted. no cane or anything. she had a lot of different devices for a while, a special stroller then weelchair then walker, but she is FINE. she actually works w my son at MCD's now. THEY dont always know what they are talking about, and we never know what the hand of God can do...

A CDing party sounds like a lot of fun to me...I always try to tell people about how much I love using them when I get the chance. Now if I could just get DH to stop telling them that it's not always cheaper if one gets obsessed with pretty prints the way I did last summer...

I'm so glad you guys got your diapers. I was doing a chinese fire drill and couldn't help. #1's temp shot up to 103 again, so I gave her the motrin a little early and started prepping everything to take her to the doctor/urgent care/whatever, and now it's down to 100.5 again. If I take her anywhere now, by the time I'd get there it would be normal. But of course now that I've done this in the middle of the night the meds will stop working and we will either have to do an ice bath or take her to the ER, I guess. Honestly not sure which would be worse!

Mommyscott... I dont think your pants are crocheted & knit, that looks like a standard crochet ribbing. Its really really easy to do!

I have been crocheting my entire life I think. Its really a therapy thing that started when I was in a really unsafe home - my conselor bought my one hook and one skein and I would make something, undo it, and start over on something new. It was really great.

Now, Im seriously crunched to make all these longies/soakers! I've made blankets, slippers, "tea panties", you name it. lol

Speaking of which...... I think I over lanolized my longies

THat is so great about E! You know, they gave me a lot of doom and gloom stories about #2's severe torticolis and severe plagiocephaly, and it all turned out to not be true. She is 100% resolved on both, which is supposedly a miracle and never happens. Like mamazluv says, you never know what God has planned for you...or what your children are capable of!

I completely missed this thread! I can't believe it.

Last night, it was raining SO hard that I couldn't sleep!! DH & I (and the kids) sleep w/ a sound machine, but the rains was so flipping loud that it was annoying! So, I barely slept. I tried to get up and move to a different room, but my hips and pubic bone feel like they are going to snap, so I couldn't move! heheheehe... the never-ending circle of sleep deprivation.

My parents took the kids this morning to give me some time to rest and fold laundry. They are the BEST. I am going to make some bread too. I completely forgot that we have a bread machine!!! I've been using my kitchen aid and making it that way. These past couple of weeks, I've been too lazy and TOO preggo to make bread, so we've been out.

That's what we need to do. Any free investment advice is always welcome!!

Ok, I'll post this breifly here in case anyone else wants to read :goodvibes:

I am in no way a tax advisor, but a general rule of thumb is for every 600 dollars you get back, you can increase your withholdings by 1. Talk to your HR dept for that, or your boss if in small businesses :)

With that extra money that you'll see on your paychecks, I would highly suggest you look at three things -

1. Habit. How much are you willing to commit on a religious basis. This can be as simple as 20 bucks a week (about what your withholding change could be, or more actually).

2. ROR - Rate of Return is important. I am so beyond furious that our government isnt teaching people this crap! We NEED to understand the value of money, compound interest, and theres only so much I can do. Based on your age, you want to be as agressive as possible with your investments under age 45. Then begin to change your percentage ratio with possibly upping more managed muniples the older you get.

3. Paying "Uncle Sam" as little as possible - LEGALLY. It never ceases to amaze me that a single mom can pay more in taxes than my family might. I just really push the education with my clients and spread the word like wild fire. In this case, this 3rd rule is really important because this could mean putting your money into something such as Roth IRAs or Traditional IRAs. Personally, I prefer the Roths for a billion reasons. That way your setting yourself up to GROW your money!!!! But not taxed like crazy on it either. These are legal programs to help everyone that choses to enact savings!

.......................................... off the soap box..................................

BTW, I am state licensed as a financial advisor in the state of Idaho, each state has different rules and regulations, but I am working on my SEC licenses right now. I have to say, that what I said is an opinion and until SEC (federally) licensed, my opinion cannot be taken as facts to live by. And on a personal note........ OH. MY. the SEC tests are scarier than hell! :yuck:

:yuck:

I"m afraid that we are breaking #3 in a big way...since we started working on becoming debt free we cancelled all 401k and IRA's.....this year just for giggles I did the little thing at the end of turbo tax and we would have gotten another $1600 back just for contributing:yuck:

and thats not counting any interest that we would have made..I can't wait until we get to that point again...

Busy morning! But I finally had time to catch up on the thread.

:yay: for E standing - I love it when traditional medicine is proved wrong!

Taxes - dh met with our accountant yesterday. Who knows what the results will be. Last year we had to pay out a lot of money - and then his business got audited - and we had to pay out a lot more money.

Savings - we have a completely different view of finances than the worldview, so we don't have any retirement, 401k, roth IRAs, etc...

Yeah! Congrats Eli!

Morning! Just a drive by posting, I don't have time to read all the post. It's snowing here :yuck: I've got lots to work on today, need to stay focused.

We're getting quite a bit of snow here in Nebraska, although it is already lightened up since this morning. They called off school today which is fine with me since I had school activities that kept me at work late both Monday and Tuesday.

Remember the paint buckets I bought, that #1 was dying to see? She had asked if I bought her a pink one, and I had said that no it was white but she could color on it with pink markers if she liked. Well, she got the bucket and tried to color the ENTIRE thing, including the bottom, with the pink marker. I don't have the heart to tell her that it will probably all wash off in the first rain after we plant things in it. Now she is drawing pictures of her bucket, her sister's bucket, and her brother's bucket, cutting them out, and doing some sort of collage with them.

I love it when you can get so much mileage out of a cheap household item!

You know, DS is obsessed with water bottles...I bet if I put a bunch of rice in an empty one he would be happy for hours chasing it around the house.

Okay mamas, I've folded and put away the laundry that was in the dryer, washed the dishes, loaded the dishwasher, put away DS's toys and all the books he pulled off the shelves today, now I just have to go wash the pot I boiled his diapers in yesterday in the bathtub since it doesn't fit in our tiny little kitchen sink and I'm going to bed. On debt/investments, as we only have $50-100 to spare every month we really haven't been investing. We're just trying to get some debt paid off so we have more left every month. I am in no way a tax advisor, but a general rule of thumb is for every 600 dollars you get back, you can increase your withholdings by 1. Talk to your HR dept for that, or your boss if in small businesses :)

I used just plain old dsq infant prefods with the green edge. Love, love, loved them. They are simple and easy to use. I really didn't start "experimenting" with diapers until the infants were starting to get small. I only gave them up recently 'cause I felt they were getting too short (even though a lot of you thought they looked just fine).

For night time - we use Nikki's Nappies flannel fitteds. They work great!
Let me see if I can find the picture of him when I first got them.

Laundry - one more load. wash dry & fold.

Once again, I have no clue what we're having for dinner...... I am terrible at meal planning, but awesome at things in a pinch. I can make huge meals from nearly nothing, dont ask me how. It just works that way in our home.

Not really newborn - he's about 2 months in this picture. I actually don't have any pics of him in just his diaper (except a sposie - which we used for the first few days until the ebf poo started). I also have some AIO's from her that I use when out and about and keep in the diaper bag. They are pretty much the same - just different outer and inner materials and not nearly as absorbent.

ETA: I added a trifolded baby wipe inside both of those for a little extra absorbency

Oh dear, so cute!!!! Thank you for that picture! My first two girls were 7lbs9oz and 7lbs5oz then my third came out 8lbs11oz. So, next time I'm thinking it'll be at least 8lbs.

I was thinking 24 infant pfs and 12 kl0 or bububebe or something of the like. I'm just trying to have it planned so I can have enough saved by then to buy them for cash (not credit  ). Plus I know I need covers too.

Wanna share?! :hide: Anyone know if it will work to use yarn that is 70% wool to make shorties/soakers? I found a colorway that I  but it is only 70% wool  I also need to know where I can get inexepensive yarn for dying and whether or not it is ok to use kool-aid to dye it with? (Think I saw something on this in the craft forum the other day)

Can I also ask a question?....I know that Christina and Rebekah (and others I'm sure but those are the 2 that I can think of off the top of my head, oh, and the mama that shared her crochet longies pattern  ) have shared some of the secrets behind their talents BUT is it taboo to give out that info? Like say you made wipes solution and I was interested in making wipes solution but had no idea where to start...is it wrong to ask how you got your start? I really want to work on some stuff....I want to be a part of the congos and WAHM wares (not sure I could actually fly solo but you never know) I'm 28...I've worked everyday since I was 15...I want more! (not that it wouldn't be work...just a different type...) pls don't be upset with the way it is worded...I just want something more....I want to work pt when the big kids are in school and make up the rest by working at home on stuff even if I only sell them at the big craft shows around here....I want to raise some funds for activities for the kids and to be able to take some online classes for me and maybe some craft classes as well

It depends on what the other 30% is. Like, there is a 70 wool/30 soy blend they make that is gooooorogeous but the soy would work like cotton and wick like mad. If it was acrylic I guess it would work okay, like nylon in wool sweaters--not as nice as 100% wool but it would work.

Jennifer... I don't think its taboo to ask, some are really willing to help, others completely catch me off gaurd with their hasty answers. I know that my local yarn shoppe has some awesome ladies there that help anyone and everyone at their "sit and stitch" evenings. Thats really how I got started, and because those ladies were so helpful, I cant imagine myself telling someone that I'm uncomfortable helping them. Knitting is knitting. Crochetting is crochetting. We can all develope skills, it just takes alot of practice, and imo, some great mentors & peers cheering us on :)

I think you got me mixed up with someone though. I don't use a wipe solution. sorry! We're strictly water in a squirt bottle.

Oh ya, I would think that 70% wool is fine if the rest is arcylic. Cotton wicks. Even if lanolized, a friend of mine tried it.

Some WAHMs are happy to share, some are not. It all just depends, and I think a lot of it has to do with what is their "creation" and what is able to be researched and learned. For example, there are lots of online tutorials for making some things - that kind of information is usually put out there and happily given if someone asks. But if a mama puts in lots and lots of time creating something totally their own design/recipe, I doubt that they would share, nor would I blame them for not sharing! As for myself, I've had lots of help from many mamas on here who have shared tips and information (Christina being one of them :hugs:). Because so many mamas have shared what they know with me, I, in turn am more than happy to share.

Soaps, wipes beans, sewing/crochet patterns, etc... that mamas come up with on their own that might require lots of time to experiment and create are like a personal "recipe." Does that make sense?

In the beginning, when you're in the learning stage, you kindof have to experiment. See what you can learn online and from other mamas, then give it a try for yourself. Play around and see what you can come up with, you know?

All you can do is ask :) Put your questions out there in craft chat, find a few mamas that make what you'd like to make and ask if they mind sharing how they got started, do online searches for recipes... The worst that can happen if you ask someone is that they'll say no. :hugs:

Honestly, when someone asks me for info on dyeing, I'm not offended, but take it as a compliment. Someone likes my stuff and they want to know how to do it. It's fun! I love to share it! And as a few other mamas have mentioned, I wouldn't have been able to do it if others hadn't shared with me.

I found the tut...Rebekah, I hope you don't mind me reposting it :goodvibes:

Okay here's what works for us:

Spread diaper out flat under baby:
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn156/RebekahG77/Tutorial%20Pics/Picture1093.jpg

Trifold the front, folding down if you need to:
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn156/RebekahG77/Tutorial%20Pics/Picture1094.jpg

The diaper is flat in back, trifolded in front:
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn156/RebekahG77/Tutorial%20Pics/Picture1086.jpg

I spread the sides of the front out most of the way, but not all the way; this leaves a little flap that keeps the pin off baby's skin. If you fold down the front you can spread the front out all the way and even wrap around to baby's back - the folded down part will keep the pin off baby's skin.

not folded down:
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn156/RebekahG77/Tutorial%20Pics/Picture1087.jpg

folded down:
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn156/RebekahG77/Tutorial%20Pics/Picture1096.jpg

Bring the back around to the front. If you haven't folded down, slip your fingers between the front and where it's still slightly trifolded:
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn156/RebekahG77/Tutorial%20Pics/Picture1088.jpg

with no one here I'm browsing the wool....uh oh :giggle:

ETA: my family thinks I'm nuts...but my bf is supportive in whatever crazy idea I decide to do (as he puts it :fryingpan:)
not taboo, but keeping in mind that if you are to be "competition" that some mamas might not be exactly forthcoming about their handy tips. but like a pp said, research it online, and go from there. also ask, if they dont want to tell, i have found that ppl are not usually nasty about it...

also if you dont try, you will never know, and you may say "what if" later on. and btw, wahm wares costs nothing and isnt hard to get approval.
also HC hosting isnt that expensive. check it out. they have templates and although i have had a million Q's today, i submitted a help ticket, and have gotten a reply... i decided to go solo. i dont know how that will turn out, but i dont know if i dont try. you can check the different types of accounts there and see what fits you best. and you have no committment. you pay when you use it, and when you dont, its still there, but non functional. like my monthly is $5. setup is a little more, but go check it out.

and i totally am like you said. invisible yet somewhat obnoxious...

Melissa - I'm glad your daughter enjoyed it so much!

Rebecca - that's too cute about the socks. Your table towels look nice. My issue would be rotating them all - I have this :loony: thing about always rotating my towels, wash cloths, diapers, etc... I wouldn't want to have to unroll them all just to rotate and snap them back together.

I'm not necessary looking for someone to give me their secret as everything has to be made your own...I just want to know where to start and find someone to give me a few pointers along the way...maybe bounce some ideas off of someone that will think that I actually am from this planet...

I've been sledding but not since I was a kid...I have never been skiing but my older 4 have gone with my mom and Dad and love it! I went and watched them from inside the lodge with the baby...I watched one older kid and one younger and the other 2 were with my mom and dad, they came in and had lunch (a picnic), and then the other 2 went out...I can ice skate, roller skate and roller blade but have no interest in skiing....too cold!

I once put Sadie in for a bath while she was still wearing her shoes. She'd been outside playing and we had stripped off everything else. I wasn't paying attention to the fact that she still had her shoes on.

Before my massive multi-quote, I have to say that last night was SOOOO much better! I think this sleep training thing is actually working, and I feel human this morning for the first time in MONTH! :bliss:

I've not figured out a good fit yet for the LL premium. I think I've just lost my touch for putting a prefold on good. Maybe she's getting too squirmy? I need to decide which set to keep and which to sell though.

I go back and forth between loving and hating my premiums, I think some days they work well and some they don't. For the days they don't, I use my LL toddler smalls even though the fit isn't as tight and don't stress about it too much.

The sausage is gonna have to wait for Sunday morning - hopefully I can remember to stir it up on Saturday before heading to bed.

Oh, on the cranky front. I've increased the number of solid feedings and ds is so much happier. I feel bad that he was unhappy cause he wanted more to eat.

You can mix it up and use it the same morning if you forget, the flavors just won't be quite as well blended, KWIM? And :hugs: on the solid feedings...it's so hard to know when they're ready for more sometimes. I resisted the idea of going to 3 meals a day with DS because I was afraid he would not want to nurse as well, but I finally did and he's a much happier little guy. And still nursing 4-5 times a day.

Well Kari - how was your day?

It was great! I got almost all the things on my agenda done. Scored some great flats and some more family cloth. Ds2 is not Mr Cranky today.

I'd say it's a great day!

:roflmbo: :roflmbo:

Any of you who have cd'd a newborn.

What was your favorite diaper and why? Pictures would be nice :goodvibes:

I used pfs and Thirsties, but not until his stump fell off. I got the premie pfs but only used them until he was about 3 weeks old...they would have fit longer, but for some reason I didn't think to put something inside as a doubler and he was peeing straight through them in like 30 minutes. I didn't think to get a picture of him in his cloth until he was about 3 weeks old, the first time we put him in an infant pf (please excuse the fuzziness of the pic...). He was 6lbs. 15.6 oz. and 19 1/2 inches long when he was born, if that makes a difference:

Shopping - "my" 14 yr old (pretty sure you all know shes not mine biologically. lol) wants flowers for v-day. She didnt ask for them, but we were talking about how she's never had any one ever buy her flowers - I'm going to get her a killer bouquet then!!!!! I'm so excited.

Awww.

I love all the little newbie pics!

Woohoo!!!!! Once I finish my first longies I'm celebrating with a Peace Fleece order :giggle:

I totally did that, just with a purewool order. I'm curious to try Peace Fleece...you'll have to tell us how you like it once you get it!

I don't have any newborn CD pictures! We CDed from the moment he left the hospital, but I just never thought to take pictures. :giggle:

It's been a rough week. I just want to go home and relax. Unfortunately, I have two more hours of work to get through.

:hugs: I hear you, those weeks just never seem to end.

with no one here I'm browsing the wool....uh oh :giggle:

:giggle2: I totally do that, although now I'm pretty happy with our stash so I mostly just look and then leave.

Ugh. DH just called from the urgent care clinic. #1 has the flu.

:bighug: sorry to hear that, I hope the rest of you don't all come down with it!

Melissa, great pics of your DD on the slopes!
