I always mean to go get it, but I just keep forgetting. She isn't in day care so we have never "needed" it before. I was just reading about someone who had to have an error corrected and was told the first year it can be corrected but after a year it is hard to get done. My DD is almost 17 months. I feel like a terrible mama that I don't have my DDs birth certificate. Anyone else wait forever to get it or am I just terrible?

Chase is 14 months old and we haven't gotten it yet. Honestly I don't even know which county I would get it from. The one the hospital was in or the one we lived in or the one we live in now. We moved while I was in the hospital and I don't remember what I put on the forms. If it makes you feel better, we probably still won't have it when he is 17 months old. :lostit:

it might be a state to state thing but all three of my boys' were automatically mailed to us huh??

So have you not claimed them on taxes? :headscratch:

Ok I feel better now. lol. In the hospital they gave me a form to fill out that all we had to do was mail a check or money order for $15 with the form and they would send it to us. But we lost the form. We have switched pedi offices 3 times and not one has asked for it, so I just keep forgetting about it. I am going to try to make it down to the health department on one of my days off to get it. Honestly I don't even remember filling out the information in the hospital, so it could be completely wrong for all I know. I know the nurse that gave it to me to fill out kept asking me to sign the affidavit to put my DH on the birth certificate because she ASSumed we weren't married.

Thanks for making me feel better ladies. :goodvibes:

she means she never got the copy, not that she didnt file for one...

and you dont need a bc to file for taxes, you need a ssn....

You just need the ssn # for that.... we filled out the form for that at the hospital and it came in the mail after a couple weeks iirc.

I guess that's what's throwing me off. We had to show the birth certificates to get the SSNs.

ehh...

theres a check box on the bc paper that says "if you want to get a ssn right now, check this box" then something about you dont have to...
:headscratch:

or at least in the 2 states i have birthed in...

WE got DS's SSN long before birth certificates... but we got them shortly after birth to have for when we're flying to prove that they're under 2 (to fly free). (ETA) In fact, we just got DS#2's SS card in the mail this week--we haven't ordered his bc yet though.

wow we never had to pay for our birth certificates:headscratch: how strange
and even if you end up losing them it is only $5 to get a copy of a new one. boy it's so weird from state to state you know?

I got my daughter's after she turned 5, when I registered her for Kindergarten. It was $10, btw. (That wasn't what was making us wait, though!) I didn't have any need for it before then – she has her SSN for bank accounts/taxes, she doesn't have a passport, etc.

birth certificates and ssn were both mailed to us because we had to fill out the paperwork in the hospital before we left....we got the bc in about 1 1/2 weeks and ssn in about 3 wks.
we really only have used them for the peds office i guess there really isn't any reason for it. we live near the canada border so we needed it for passing the border oh and we also needed a copy of the bc to add him to dh health insurance

This may vary from state to state but I had to go to the county DD was born in ...where the hospital is to get hers. We dont even live (and have never lived) in the same state where she was born. My OCD husband had to have it right away so we went like 3 weeks later to go get it and the SSN came in the mail. I think the last time I had to get a new copy of my birth certificate it was $15 and I cant remember but I think hers was too. We havent pulled it out since, except to get her passport when she was 3 mos.

We were supposed to go and get one at some point after Ry was born, but we never did. We got his ssn card in the mail, but we never went and got a bc, and hes 11 months. I should probably do that soon, huh? lol.

I have a few copies of the kids and ours. :) DH needed the birth certificates to add the girls to his records (military). I always like to have a couple copies of all of our birth certificates just in case.

Thanks! I bet if I call the hospital, they can point me in the right direction.

I don't have either of my kids' yet. We filled out the paperwork in the hosp, but have to pay to get them- $15 I think. We haven't needed them so it's not a big deal. We're also going to homeschool so I don't know that we'll ever get them. Their ssn cards came in the mail rather quickly.

I haven't gotten DSs yet. He will be one in April. We have to go down to the HD to pick it up. I just never think of it and when I do they are usually closed. Maybe one day we will get it.

Don't feel bad. I didn't order my son's BC until right before he started preschool last fall. He was almost 3yo.

I only picked up DS's because we were traveling. I also gave the poor women at the register of deeds a piece of my mind about having to pay for proof that I squeezed this kid out, lol! ($10, but still)

DD#2 just turned 2 a couple of weeks ago, and we just sent out yesterday to get a copy of her birth certificate. We haven't really needed it so it just got put off for a long while. We sent off for it when we sent off for DD#3 birth certificate, she was born just over 3 weeks ago. We figured we might as well go ahead and request a copy for both LOs.

ETA, they cost $12 each.

We had to file for DS2's BC ourselves because he was born via UC, so when we went to pick his up we also finally picked up DS1's--he was 2 ;)

ETA: I've been married 3 years and haven't changed my name legally yet. I finally got my BC (the same day I got the boys') and now I have to get another form from another place, then sit at the SS office all day, and I just don't have time to do that with 2 little ones!!

We my daughter is almost 3.5, Zeke is 14 months and we have yet to get a copy of their birth certificates. We had both of their SSN by the time they were 2 weeks old. And when we have flown they told us to just bring their "shot records". I keep meaning to order a copy of them, but always forget. I think they are something like $10 in AZ.

I think ours are $18 each!!

My oldest is 9 and I don't have a bc for any of my kids. It costs $25 here , I have never needed it so never thought of it as a neccessary expense.

It took me a long time to get my DD's as well! I can't say that she was over a year, but she wasn't a newborn either.

Our DD's BC is from FL and I think we paid $12 each. I got two copies just because I tend to misplace things...

We don't have one for either girl. You have to go downtown and into the courthouse. I am never there and I don't wish to drag 2 kids in there. We haven't needed it, so it hasn't felt like a rush to get it. I'm annoyed that I have to pay for it and that I have to go in person to get it.

I only have my 13 year olds and my 6 year olds. The others got into school and everything without one. I told my oldest we have to get her's soon though, because she will be going into driver's ed next year. Yikes!! So 14 1/2 years is waaay worse than 17 months.

Everyone has made me feel much better. lol. I mentioned at work that I hadn't gotten it yet and everyone thought I was crazy. We do have her SSN card, that did come in the mail a couple weeks after she was born.

I have Monday off so I think I will head down to the health department to get it just to check it out. lol.

Kearnan didn't get his till he was going to fly for the first time. He was about 15months then I think. I still don't have Tharen's, he is 3 now. I'm really bad about that. I don't drive on the highway, and it is hard for dh to be off work during the day to go up to the county court to do that kind of thing. So he just doesn't have it yet.

We just got DS's bc we're leaving the country in a couple months, and need it for his passport. It really is a pain, going down to the social security office and filling out an application then waiting for them to process your request. Maybe its not like this everywhere but our county had 10K babies born here last year alone so they are busy!!

I kept forgetting to get mine too! :giggle: I swore to myself that I would get it before ds turned 1 and I just got it in the mail today! 1.5 weeks shy of his first bday! It's a relief to finally have it. I can't imagine going years without getting it!

Really? We were sent home a form to fill out and we could pay by check or MO.
They were sent to us a few weeks later. With DD I ordered 2, just in case something happened to one of them. But for DS (through a different state) I only had the option of purchasing 1.

Oh we were sent home with that form, we just didn't send it in and then it was lost. :giggle: Which is why I have to go to the health department to get it. The SS card was sent in from the hospital which is the reason we got that. I am terrible at remembering to mail things. Which is why we do all our bills online.

They sent us a copy of the bc a couple of months after DD was born. But we got ONE copy of it, and if we wanted extras it would have been something like $35 each... I would have liked to have an extra one just in case, but for that kind of money, I can live without it!
I agree though, if it hadn't been sent to us automatically it would probably have been awhile before we got around to it.

so, just by reading the first page, you don't mean you never filed for one, you just never went down and purchased a copy for your own home records?
That's really no big deal at all.
Just go down, pay the fee,get one. Easy peasy..some places even let you do it by mail.
