So I was thinking about making some fleece longies/shorties to sell on here and etsy. I have been looking around to see what they are going for and thought I would ask what you mamas would pay for some. Just a simple pair to start with. I figured if I can design and make costumes then I can help the family with some financial stuff by making some things for other kids. Anything else you mamas are looking for??

If its "Costumes" then what kind. I make as my friends little girl calls it imagination skirts. They are just plain skirts in different lengths that fit a range of sizes for dress-up. I have made some super kid capes for friends. And a few animal body parts... (like the tail to a monkey and a lion). But kind of "costumes" do you think your little one would like in their imagination chest. I am going to try to whip up a few things this week to get pictures.

TIA

I would pay probably $35-$40 for basic longies but maybe as much as $50-$55 for more detailed stuff.

Costumes are a great idea!

I agreed with the pp,that's how much I'd pay too :).

Wow, I'm cheap, there is no way I'd pay $35 for basic fleece longies.
I might pay that much for a cute costume though.

I think maybe the pp meant they would pay that much for wool longies. :headscratch: I make fleece longies and I wouldn't except that much for basic fleece longies.

That makes much more sense.

Maybe $20 plus shipping for basic fleece longies, depending on the quality of the fleece?

fleece sells for usually around 15$ maybe 20 at most but that would be for something a bit fancier (embroidery or applique)

I think the market is flooded with fleece diaper cover makers......but costumes, I've seen none so that would be nice.

Edited to gauge what kind of costumes.

I wouldn't pay for fleece longies because I can sew unless they were really awesome with cool things on the legs or butt added. Maybe if they had embroidery on them. I would probably only pay up to $10 or $15.

I also wouldn't pay more than $20 for wool ones either. I'm just cheap.

There is a lot more to being a WAHM than the ability to sew up some fleece pants.
Will the seams be professionally serged? Then stitched? Edges cuffed or T&T'ed? How will the tops be: fitted or elastic? There is a lot involved in making stuff that you sell to other people. I make my own fleece pants for all my kids, but meeting the demands of people giving you money for your product is wayyy different.
You should start with testers so that you can get your sizing down pat. Then see what they suggest. Gage your pricing from their input. To start with, you will almost have to sell at a cheaper rate to get your product out there; work up from there.

Yes, I plan on serger as soon as I get a new serger. DH dropped my other one moving it. The other details will very once I get an idea of what I like. I am still testing patterns on my DS before I toss them out there for you guys. I am a Costume Design major. So I have had training in sewing and pattern making. I am just trying to get an idea so when I go to DH with this idea I have a rough estimate to say this is what I wanna do.

Honestly, the profit margin for WAHM stuff is pretty small. You will probably make more money getting in to the boutique children's clothing market than making fleece pants for CD'd kids. Like this kind of stuff: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-OOAK-Custom-Boutique-Design-Dress-Pants-5-6-7-KITTY_W0QQitemZ350158625305QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_D efaultDomain_0?hash=item350158625305&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Another thing to consider when you make something like pants, is how do you feel about making the exact same thing over and over and over? When you make children's clothes and costumes (which is what I mostly make as well), you are making something different every time. But when you are making pants, you are just doing the same thing all the time. And making very little, and dealing with crabby customers. If you are a design major, then perhaps you should look into getting a job with a major clothing company, than doing WAHM stuff?

I pay a Mama on here $20 for fleece sets ($18 when I send her my own fabric). Not sure how much she makes, though, as she supplies the shirt and fleece.

I don't have much need for longies as I live in Florida, but the costumes are a great idea! The more affordable you can make the costumes the more successful you will be. There is a real shortage of costumes on the market that are reasonable in price. As far as what costumes to make? I would say the sky is the limit. My girls love ornate shiny "princess" dresses (especially with matching accessories like shoes and purses), ballerina outfits, animal costumes (cats, monkeys, alligators, etc.). I am currently in search of a costume for my 3 yo that would go with a monkey (my 2 yo) and a banana (my newborn to be) for next Halloween if you have any ideas, I would pay you to make it.

for costumes, i'd LOVE TO see "open ended/open minded" pieces...

like capes that can BE skirts, vests that can have stuff stuck to them to be other "characters", aprons that lend themselves to the idea of being a particular something.... and i love the idea of dress-up animal parts.

mix and match with room to add-on as family budgets allow.

that's what i'd look for!

i love the idea of costumes. I'm really looking forward to getting my DD a bunch of dress up stuff when she gets a little older. I like animal costumes, but I also like career costumes.
