I wasn't sure where else to put this so forgive me if there's a better place. It's probably a really stupid question but I'm 26 and so is my husband. We don't visit the doctor regularly. I go for annual paps and that's it. What do you go to the doctor for on a regular basis? Just a simple check up? If you don't mind me asking, what does that consist of? I've honestly never had one nor do we really have a regular family doctor.

I worry about DH and his eating habits. He's a picky eater and doesn't eat any meats, fruits or vegetables. I'd like him to go but he's so stubborn.

I only go when I feel sick and maybe once a year to get my levels checked. Its good to go just to make sure everything is going well, useally you do blood work 2 weeks before so they have the results to go over with you and they check you from head to toe. If your dh does not want to go he wont Men are stubborn. my dh only goes when he feels like giving a diet another go, his little friend has an issue or for work =)

I go at least once a year, but I have to as I have hypothyroidism. I have to get my bloodwork done to make sure that the dose of thyroid I'm on is still a good dose. They usually test my cholesterol at the same time since they are going to draw blood.

I think unless there is a problem, at your age you generally go just once a year for a pap. It's not a bad idea to go and get a thorough check-up -- heart, cholestoral, etc -- but after that initial check-up, I think most things are recommended on an every 3-5 yr check-up. I don't know if there is anything guys should get checked every year or not. As you get older there are certain things they check at certain times. For instance, when a woman hits 35 (I think) that is when they start wanting to do mammograms. When a man hits 50 (again, I think) they start checking for prostate cancer. Everyone should have a colonoscopy done at about 50 as well. You could always just ask your doc what they recommend and go from there.

Oh, anything that runs in your family history you should have checked out regularly. Diabetes runs on my mom's side of the family so I will probably have that checked out no later than 40. Heart disease, however, isn't really something in my family, so I probably will not worry about getting tested for anything on that string until the recommended time.

I tend to have something get me to the doctor at least once a year, but if nothing came up, I'd go for a physical, so we can get more "baseline" information on my chart, get a lipid profile done, and continue building rapport with the doctor.

I want my doctor to know who I am when I have any health problems.

I don't know if all doctors do it or not, but I think my doctor attaches notes about our non-medical conversations to my chart. Like if we were looking for a house the last time I saw here, she'll ask if we found one. I can't imagine she can remember details like that for all her patients without notes.

What does he eat then?

That is what I was thinking. Doesn't leave much.

Nope, not at all. He's been that way since he was 3. His mom never forced him to eat foods he didn't want to *ugh!* So he normally has a frozen cheese pizza for dinner and half of one for lunch. Other than that he does eat certain cereals, scrambled eggs, pancakes, spaghetti (plain Ragu sauce ONLY and no meatballs), french fries, grilled cheese, mac & cheese, bean & bacon soup (the only thing with a part of meat in it) and that's really about it.

He seems healthy and has never had any kind of issues. He's SO skinny though. I joke that I should go on his diet but there's no way I could survive!

He tries to eat a piece of meat and gags because of texture. The only thing we could think of is possibly getting him hypnotized but we're not sure if that would even work.

It's horrible when we do go out to eat at a nice restaurant and DH has to ask for the children's menu!!!

I go to a family doctor and normally go once a year for a pap and a physical. She also does obstetrics, so she delivered my baby and did all my prenatal. I also go a couple times a year to make sure my Zoloft is at the right dose. My anxiety attacks seem to get worse in the fall and winter, so I go in then to adjust dosages.

bean & bacon soup

OMG mama I had to laugh at this. My husband is also ludicrously picky for a 48 year old man, and also LOVES Campbell's Bean and Bacon soup. And yet he will not eat beans in any other form. I'm like, "do you realize that those white things in the soup are BEANS???" :banghead:

Sorry to hijack, but I had to share that!

ETA: yes, I go to the doctor about every other year for "routine" bloodwork. My midwife takes care of my pelvic and breast exams, but I see a GP for regular ailments, allergies, etc. I think it's good to have a relationship with a doctor for the times when you need them for a sick visit.

I'm also 26, my DH is 35 and until we got married, he hadn't been to a doctor for an annual check probably since high school!!! I go annually to my GP (she doesn't do my paps, my OB does). I got my DH to go to her and we found out he has borderline high cholesterol. I could have told him that his diet sucks, but sometimes its better to hear it from someone else. I actually just went for my physical last week and it was just a basic blood pressure check, listen to the heart and lungs, check the ears and eyes. And ask if I had any issues. She said she normally does a breast check too, but because I'm BFing she decided she wasn't "trying for milk" :giggle: Its kind of a pain to go, but I think it helps build rapport with my doctor just like the PP said!

If you have no chronic medical conditions (asthma etc) the guidelines for your age are a complete physical every 3-5 years. I would try to get dh in for a check, just to make sure. And maybe talk to a nutrtionist to get some ideas? There is also a cookbook out there on how to sneak veggies into foods so they don't taste them, maybe you could try that?

I haven't had a regular check up since I was 14. I had prenatal care w/ both DC's. Other than that, I went in once to see if I had strep. We (DH, kids and myself) see a chiro about once a month though.

I've tried sneaking veggies in... he analyzes his food before eating... I can't get away with anything! I've tried bribing, begging, ultimatums... lol... nothing works.

DH is like that with certain foods. One day I forced him to try a blueberry, and you would have thought I was asking him to take cyanide!

I go usually twice a year to have my thyroid levels checked (I have no thyroid, so they're quite finicky). I also go once a year for a pap, and a mammogram (strong family history, even though I'm only 23). Between all that and DD's problems I feel like I live at the doctors!

ETA: Does he take a vitamin? I know it's no substitute for eating healthy, but it could help at least fill in some of the holes. There are plenty of ways to get protein without meat, but he would have to be a little more creative, and open his options a little more.

I only go if I'm sick to my GP. I just went a couple of months ago because of bronchitis and the dr wrote an order for me to have a bunch of bloodwork done. I think she figured since I was in there she'd get it all done. She's also my mom's GP and my son's dr so she knows us very well. My cholesterol is pretty high so I'm having to watch that. My dh really needs to go in and have everything checked. I need to make the appt myself.

I have my gyn exam every single year since I was 35. My OB is like a friend. We have visited many times other times than my medical visits. She's my mom's neighbor so I've even been to her house to see her new baby.
