Hey Mama's! I love to tie dye, and i'm considering tie dying some things to sell. I'm looking at getting prefolds to dye, and I'm trying to be cost-efficient.

Would it be horrible of me to get used prefolds??? I'm not talking about super dingy, tons of wear, falling apart, pennies-on-the-dollar condition or anything. I'm meaning EUC or some that would be EUC but have light stains that the tie-dye will cover.

I wont be listing them as "new" but will disclose "recycled and dyed" when i sell them. Think I should just by them brand new, or think recycled prefolds will sell??

Thanks!!!

I personally would go for new.

I think you would have better luck with new unfortunately. I love recycled, but people just aren't willing to pay as much for used. You could always list some as used and see how it goes though. With the difference you pay to purchase them, it might be worth it.

You might get some used to practice or use as examples or testers but if you have to buy them in the first place it seems that with shipping and all you dont really save much by going with used. Maybe start with coop PFs to save $$ to start with. :)

Probably would have better luck with new, but maybe offer both! You could offer new at one price and used at a lower rate.

Good luck!!

What if you called them "upcycled" instead of recycled? Sounds kinda trendy to me, and it may be more likely to sell?

If you do use the used prefolds I'd advertise recycled and your wash routine before coloring them (i.e.- washed in hot water with bleach or whatever)

Also you could offer both new and recycled and charge a bit less for the recycled and see what sells better... it'd be a great way to test it out!

good tip! I think I'll label them as upcycled. I just got some nicer dyes, but lately I've been making friends with my sewing machine instead of playing with my dyes.... maybe I'm a lil A.D.D because I bounce all over the place with my projects....:lostit:

I think you could sell them for a discounted price.

I don't know. Honestly, I'm all for upcycled/recycled things. Most of my wool is recycled. But with prefolds, it's a little different I think. Maybe you could try it out, but shipping is so expensive that you may be able to get cooped prefolds for around the same price as EUC.

I like the offering both idea! People will pay more for new and some people only buy new. But offering the second hand ones will cater to mamas on more of a budget or who like recycled items.

You might also want to offer (if you plan to post on DS) mamas the option to send their stuff to you to tie-dye? I'm not sure on the costs and such but just a thought. :)
