From the time my son was a newborn he would nurse himself to sleep. When my supply dried up at 11 months because of pregnany and we switched to formula he would fall asleep with a bottle. Now he is on whole milk and falls asleep with a sippy cup. I take it away as soon as he's asleep but I know this is a bad habit, I'm concerned for his teeth ect. I'd like to move his nighttime sippy cup up in his bedtime routine so that I can clean his teeth afterwards but it's SO hard to get him to sleep without the sippy cup. Also he is STILL at 14 months waking up either in the middle of the night or EARLY in the morning and the only way to get him back to sleep is with his sippy. When he wakes up I've tried everything from singing, rocking and even a cup of water to soothe him back to sleep but he refuses it all and wants his sippy cup of milk. I'm guessing he isn't full and that's why he's waking up, that or he just never learned to soothe himself back to sleep because I would always offer the breast, bottle or sippy cup  I feel bad for getting him hooked on this and was wondering if anyone had any advice on breaking this habit.

ETA: He also used to be a paci baby, I took it away at 10 months and this is when he REALLY started needing a bottle to sleep

I think you are right, he's probably waking because he's hungry. I would try to feed him something really filling right before bed. When my kid's started showing those signs, I used to feed my kids oatmeal w/fruit a bit before bedtime.

You could also try the watering down technique. Each night progressively water the milk down more, until it is only water. This is best done gradually and can take several weeks of progressively diluting the milk.Your baby will get enough milk to go back to sleep, but will set up a cycle so he is a little hungrier in the daytime, and will consume more calories while awake. Then the need for milk during the night reduces.

This is how we got our daughter to STTN. I thought she'd rebel against a mostly-water sippy cup, but the dilution happened so gradually she didn't eve notice.

Thanks so much! These are great ideas and I'm going to try them out :)
