Esp any of you mothers with older babies/toddlers! DS is 13 months old. I have never had a good milk supply by any stretch of the imagination. For the first 6 months, I pumped and/or nursed every hour during the day and every 2-3 hours at night. Over time, once he started eating solids, it slowed down a lot and things seem to kind of level off. Well, for the past few days he hasn't been wanting to nurse at all, he will start and then push away and want to get down. I am mostly wondering if my supply is dropping off again. The last three days when I pumped I was getting very little in comparison to what I had been getting. Just wondering about how much you other pumping mamas are getting?

My son is 4 months and I usually pump twice a day at work, and I get between 6-8 oz (all together, from both breasts) at each session. I've been worrying about my supply dropping once we eventually start solids..:(, but I'm going to be waiting another couple months at least.

My DD is 5 mo but will be 6 mo on the 24th and she just started solids. So now my supply is going down. I'm getting so scared now. I want to try to BF her as long as I can. I use to get as least 7-8oz or sometimes even more with both breast at a pumping session. But now that she's eating solids, I'm only getting 3-4oz on both breasts. I hope it can go back up. I try to pump after I nurse her now.

I pump three times at work and bring home about 10-12 ounces, which is about right for me-he takes 3-4 ounces a bottle. I think the key is to pump as often as your baby eats in order to keep up your supply.

Hmm.... I quit pumping after 12-15 months.... but during that time - I would say I could get about 1 ounce for every hour I didn't pump. So- if I pumped every 4 hours - I could get 4 ounces out of both breasts combined.

I just started pumping tonight, DS is 10.5mo and I got 2oz from the side he had already nursed on and then he woke up again and I stopped to go nurse him on the other side. :giggle:

Celia, how are you feeling, I hadn't seen an update, hope all is well!

My supply did drop quite a bit when my ds turned a year. He was eating a variety of solids and some whole milk with meals. I remember trying to pump for a little while, but gave up on it since I was only getting a few ounces. He did still nurse between meals and definitely at bed and nap times.

This is the age where if you want to wean, here is your opportunity. However, if you want to continue, they do pick up an interest in nursing again around 15 months. It's at this point where they will fall in love with nursing all over again! My ds drank whole milk, but continued to nurse until 26 months. When he eventually weaned, my supply was next to nothing. He didn't care. He loved the comfort of nursing. It was a beautiful ending. No crying from either of us.

I get about an ounce an hour too. My morning pump I get 3-4 oz the 10 am I get 2-3 and the afternoon I get 2ish. I've also wondered what output would look like as DS gets older, hes 3.5 months now.

On the days I don't have work (weekends and holidays), I have to pump in the morning because I wake up extremely engorged. Those pumpings I get between 4 to 7 ounces (8 if I get out of bed really, really late and oh, boy is it painful! :giggle:). I pump from the engorged side while the LO feeds from the side he nursed on during the night so I can get the maximum amount of milk possible.

At work, I get about 8 to 12 ounces in the morning pump because I don't pump at home those mornings. And at the noon and 3:30 pump, I get between 5 to 8 ounces each session, depending on how long between pumping I go, which is based on what's on the agenda that day.

On average, I make three 4.5oz bottles for the next day's feeding, along with a 6oz. bag for the freezer stash. On Fridays, I freeze the day's worth of pumping and use the Saturday's and Sunday's pumping for Monday's feeding.

I just hope the supply doesn't go down when he starts solids. I think he's very ready for them now, but I'm trying to hold out till the Saturday after he turns 6 months (which is next week!).

My son is almost 5 months. I pump twice a day during work and I only get about 3-4 oz each time I pump. I tried pumping in the morning before work, but then I get less at work. I really would like to increase my supply, but I have such trouble pumping much.

Pumping is so much work than one things it is to maintain supply. I had to start out pumping with every feeding for Sofiya in order to establish a pumping side. If I trained my breasts to only make milk on one side for blockfeeding, I would not be getting very much milk, but if I just want to bf dd while I am home, I am a leaky mess because I trained my boobs to be pumping boobs, oh the vicious cycle......

Yep like a couple pps said, I've just realized it prolly is about an ounce an hour. I usually pump every 2.5-3 hours at work and get about 1.5 per hour.

Hilarious but true! But so happy to have milk left over rather than not enough when I'm at home with him.

DS is 5 months old. I just finished pumping, and got 5 oz from each side, which is a lot but i pumped about an hour later than normal. i usually pump twice at work, and bring home anywhere from 12-16 oz. DS only takes about 9-12 (and sometimes less!), so I donate the extra  we're starting solids next month, so I am a little worried about my supply dropping. I'd hate to have to bring my pump home every day to increase my supply, but I'll do whatever is necessary!

How long did you try it? I don't know how long it takes your (as in everybody's) breasts to respond, but maybe you could try again and keep the pump running a few minutes after the flow stops. After a while your boobs *should* start producing more. You do have to be consistent about the timing and duration for it to work best. It could take several weeks for you to notice an increase.

Good Luck!

This new forum is music to my ears... and my boobs too! My DD is 8 months old, I have been getting 5-7 oz everytime I pump at work for the last couple of months. about 3 weeks ago my DD seemed to eat more than my supply. I used Funegreek to try to up my supply. I had almost every side effect and almost no results. (terrible cramps for 3 days) My DD seemed to suddenly adjust and eats even more solid now so my milk supply is enough for now. The bad thing is I only have 3 baggies in the freezer now for back up. I am afraid I will have to mix the "f" word into her milk to get her by some days. Just thinking about it make me want to cry. What have you all done to improve your supply? I pump 2x a day at work. and let her nurse "on demand" at home. Suggests PLEASE!!!

Lactation cookies and milkmaid tea! Yummy and excellent supply boosters!

It was about 2 weeks that I would pump in the mornings. I can produce so much more milk on the weekend when I'm feeding on demand. I also pump then and get more to fill the bottles I can't during the week. I could sure use a week's vacation so I can relax and try to build up my supply then.

I pump on one side while my dd is nursing on the other in the morning when we wake up. I get about 4oz then. Then I pump at around 10am at work and get anywhere between 3 and 6oz. I get the least at my 1pm pumping session, only around 2-3oz. I had an issue with supply a little bit ago. I tried fenugreek and it made me very sick. I had kind of slacked off with the morning pumpings. While I tried to get my supply back up daycare and I devised a plan where DD would get 2 4oz bottles a day and eat a little more solids while there. Then I nursed her as much as possible at night and in the morning. I freeze whatever extra I have, especially what I pump on the weekend mornings.

How does your LO respond to pumping at the same time? I am just not sure if she would even eat while I was pumping at the same time. BUt I guess I should try it!

when my LO was only BFing and even when we first started solids I would pump twice a day at work and get 8 oz each session ( I always got 1 oz per breast per hour) sometimes getting as much as 20 oz in both sessions...when I started cutting back it took me about 3 mos to get down to 1/2 oz per breast per hour....now Im not pumping at work anymore because my LO only nurses in the AM and right before bed...but if Im working a double I will pump at work and get about 1/2 oz total per hour... if you want to increase your supply try feeding you LO on both sides at every feeding and then pumping both sides for 10 min each after your done....sounds like a lot...but the extra stimulation really helps...HTH

I get about 1/2 ounce per breast/hour--4 to 5 ounces per pumping session. My ds is 11 months old. However, I was told by the experts over at the kellymom.com forums that anyone who can pump 4 ounces or more per session is considered a high volume pumper and most women will only get 1 or 2 ounces total per session. A breastfed baby never needs more than 4 ounces in a bottle, the general rule of thumb is 1 ounce per hour baby is away from mom. My guy is 27 lbs and still only gets 4ish ounce bottles at daycare!

Good info! My son gets a little under 4 ounces per bottle and today I was gone 9 hours and he took 12 ounces, is that okay?

That is probably more than enough:goodvibes: Babies will take more from a bottle than from the breast. Here is a great link with a milk calculator http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkcalc.html And some good info about pumping http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/pumping_decrease.html

Hmmm, this makes me feel much better! I am now getting about 1/4 ounce per hour and pump about every 4 hours, so about an ounce a pumping session. I had previously been up to 2-3 ounces a pumping session until the last few weeks, so this weekend I started doing everything I did before to boost my supply as much as possible, no noticeable effects yet, but I am hoping to see something soon. I only work 2-3 days a week and try to have enough for him to have EBM while I am away and right now my very little reserve is running super low. I have been pumping at home as well though and that is helping. Thankfully his interest in nursing has picked up again as well.

Just thought I would add I have never gotten 3 ounces total per pumping session and that actually came after he started solids, so an ounce total per pumping session, while low, isn't too terribly far off for me.

I pump 3 times at work and get about 4 oz each time. I also pump once before bed and get about 2 oz. That gives me 14 oz per day but DS takes 6 oz a time at daycare so they end up supplementing him with a few oz of formula everyday :(

I have trouble with this too, am thinking about switching to a slower flow bottle. I currently use the playtex drop ins but even the slow flow nipple on them seems to fast.

I use those same bottles too and I agree, even the slow flow seems fast sometimes. It kinda depends on the nipple, if you buy a two pack of slow flows, one might actually be slow and they other will drip drip drip. It used to gag DS but I guess he got used to it. I also bought some Thicken Up liquid thickener that they used at daycare for a while so the milk wouldn't come out too fast. He doesn't need to thicken up anymore. Switching bottles wasn't an option because he refused everything else!

my ds is 22 months and bfs 3x a day when i'm with him. he doesn't take a bottle anymore for naps when i'm away, but on the nights i work late, dh does give him breastmilk in a bottle, so that's the only reason i do still pump. i get only 1-2 oz per day, as i pump once during each day. by the end of the week i get enough for 1-2 bottles for him for those night i'm gone. my supply fluxes with his demand--- weekends when i'm home with him, i'll notice more on monday than usual, by the end of the week, my supply is pretty low.

When my baby was 13 months old I was pumping 4-9 oz per session, varying wildly depending on time, hydration, and how recently I'd spent a full day nursing her.

I would like to second the previous poster about the volume in a bottle that a breastfed baby needs. Childcare providers that are accustomed to formula babies don't realize that their instincts are wrong, and they will over feed your baby (undermining your ability to keep up by pumping). Since breastfed babies have less experience with bottles, they are less adept at stopping the flow and may appear to "chug" the bottle as they try to keep up with it. Give them firm guidelines to not overfeed!

I am a SAHM so I dont pump that often. maybe 3 times a week. I get about 6-7 oz both breasts combined. When I pumped every day I got 8 combined easy, but I take fenugreek.
