this morning during my morning pump i pumped 9 oz out of my right side! and like 7 out of the left but thats standard for me on one side. 9 from one side and the combined total of 16 is a new personal best :giggle2: . got me wondering though... whats the most you've pumped in a sitting? surely i'm not the only one that keeps track of this kind of thing. am i:blush: ?

That's pretty impressive. I usually pump 9 ounces total, both sides combined, over 3-4 pumping sessions while at work. I've maybe pumped 4 ounces from one side before, but it was a total fluke.

I think the maximum capacity my left boob can hold is 8oz and right, 7oz (and that's really pushing it for both sides :giggle: delaying pumping and) emptying the boobs as completely as possible ... Any more and milk just starts leaking from the nips. :giggle2:

Most days I pump once during my 10 hour shift, and get between 12 & 20 ounces total. Some days the girls go overboard...like today.
I've pumped once today so far, 3 hours ago, and got 11 oz from one side and 6 from the other. I have 2.5 more hours at work, almost 3 before I can be home & nursing dd, so I may go pump once more. I am feeling pretty uncomfortable already, and I don't know if I'll make it all the way through the day without another session.
Meanwhile, I only work 2 days a week, and dd hates bottles...so she will take a max of 8 ounces for the entire day. Most days, she'll only deign to take 4 ounces, to keep from starving. So you can imagine what my freezer looks like.

I only pump 3-4 times a day (pretty much exclusively pumping) and I usually get between 8-10 ounces each time. But first thing in the morning I generally get about 15-20 ounces depending on what time I pumped the night before. The most I've gotten first thing in the morning is 26 ounces, but I drank a TON of water the night before and the baby slept 12 hours! I freeze on average about 20 ounces a day after she eats...

Wow! Some of these totals are awesome, wish I was close to them! I have only been pumping a few weeks and the most I think i have gotten is a combined 7 oz. We still co sleep and they nurse a few times a night and I am home with them all day so it is hard to find many times a day to pump, and hard to go very long without nursing.

With my first 2 boys (one is 5 now and the other is turning 3), they were preemies and I was an overproducer. I would produce about 24 oz every 3 hours. If I missed a session, I would know it because I was begging for my breasts to explode just to relieve the pressure. The most I pumped though was about 32-35 oz...
But momma you pumping 7-9 oz is awesome. The larger amounts is not the norm. For those of us who produce a large amount for 1 baby it gets difficult because a lot of us deal then with foremilk/hindmilk imbalances. A woman I know her baby had FTT because of her oversupply, no one had ever talked to her about foremilk/hindmilk and he was getting full off of just the foremilk and was as though he just was never getting enough even though he was full all of the time..
So anyhow, what I was getting at is, you are doing AWESOME!!

I had to exclusively pump with my firstborn (he wasn't able to latch), and I produced about 60-70 oz per day. (I ended up donating 5 gallons to a milkbank when we moved cross country) I am normally a b cup and was easily a dd when i was pumping for him lol. My dd never took a bottle :giggle:
and my ds was in the nicu, so I was pumping for him a lot in the beginning, and it has evened out now. I still ended up donating a bunch to the milkbank again.

Wow, I am impressed with how much some people can pump. I'm jelous. If I can get 3-4 oz, I'm pretty psyched. When I pump exclusively at work, I can pump about half the amount my baby eats at home so I have to get up at least once or twice at night to pump when she doesn't want to bfeed to catch up on my supply.
Anybody else have huge differences in how much they get from each side? I produce about twice as much on the right versus the left and I can't seem to get a let down on my left either through pumping or nursing. I need her to nurse on he right to then get a let down for both sides. It's kind of annoying.
Do babies consume more milk as they get older. My baby is 3.5 months now and takes about 4 oz every couple of hours when given a bottle so I assume she consumes about that much when bfeeding. I'm worried that if she starts needing a lot more, that I won't be able to keep up.

Are you planning on introducing solids at 6m or so? If so, their bm needs decrease a bit as they are on solids. And if you notice there is not enough, can you slip in an extra pumping or two, maybe you can leave a smidge earlier for work, pump when you get there before you start and then maybe get home, nurse your babe, then go ahead and about 20 min. or so later pump a bit....it will be enough to demand more of your body to produce more milk. But I woudl not worry about it until you see that she is needing more.
paaschjc
09-24-2009, 01:09 PM
Yes I a plan on introducing solids when she's ready. I usually take my baby to work with me in the mornings until about 1 pm and then hubby picks her up for the afternoon and I pump at work. I've actually found that pumping every hour or so works best since I have trouble getting more than one letdown unless I sit for quite a while to get the second one. Usually the second one doesn't product that much either. So doing onlye one letdown per pumping session seems to take the least amount of time while still giving me the most output. Though like I said, it is only about 1/2 of what she consumes in my absence. It's more difficult when hubby takes her or the entire day as I have that much more to make up later.

I exclusively pumped for 6 months. I averaged about 32 ounces a day. It took 6 hours a day to get this. Each session was at least 1 hour. It was a nightmare of depression and feelings of extreme inadequacy. I just couldn't let go of the idea of my baby getting breast milk. I would not do that again. However if I were able to have another baby I think I could fix the problem I was having.

4 oz is the most I get. That can be from both breasts combined when I am pumping at work or it may be from just the left (my big producer) in the middle of the night. I just went back to work and find it hard to get more than 12 oz out in 4 pumpings during that 8 hr period. I pump and do compressions until nothing comes out then switch to hand expression until nothing comes out and then go back to pumping for another 2 min. Wow, a lot of you are expressing so much! I was fortunate enough to be able to EBF both of my DS (2 of them; well, DS#1, I had to occasionally supplement with formula at the daycare, but #2 was EBF). If I remember correctly, the most I've pumped at one sitting (both sides combined) was probably 20oz.
I was using Ameda PY, and the bottles were only 5-oz, so when I had to put new bottles in the middle of pumping, I remember my breasts still squirting, and I had to change the bottles so quickly!
This time around (I'm ready to pop for our DS#3), I got the Avent ISIS Duo, and I can attach bigger bottles, so hopefully that'll solve the problem. (well, I'm sure Ameda probably sells bigger bottles, too, but usually 10oz from both size combined was the norm, so I didn't bother buying bigger bottles...)

I'm pumping like 3x a day (in addition to what my DD eats) and getting a total of 6-9 oz/day. I have no clue how I'm going to get up to 17 oz/day which is the amount I need to start pumping from now until May if I want to store up 2 months worth for my DD. She will be 10 months at the end of April and we want to start TTC then so I would like to have 2 months stored up to get her a year worth of mama's milk just in case I get pregnant my first time trying and my milk dries up fast.

While DD was still nursing I pumped all the time, morning before sitter, twice while at work, once when I got home and before bed. I had a lot of milk and DD wasn't(still isn't) a big eater. I ended up donating milk to my SIL for my nephew who is 4 months younger than DD and she couldn't produce enough for him. So I fed 2 babies for a couple of months.
That being said I did get 12-14oz out of my left breast alone some mornings after a long nights sleep and then of course pumped the right. I don't remember how much that combined was, but I'll never forget those huge amounts on the left side.

Since going back to work at 12 wks, I have kept track of nearly all pump sessions at work. When I first got back, I got 8 ounces total, but that was once in a million type thing. I have more frequently gotten 7 ounces, but typical is 3-5. I think that is what a body settles out on when you pump = to the number of bottles they get when you are away. If you pump more times than they eat, then I think the body is tricked into making more at each session. That's my theory anyway.
I saw someone got 12-14oz from one side?!!! :clapclap: ...that is how much I bring home in a day of 3x pumps....

 I was very blessed and my body responded to the breast pump very well. I had to start pumping when DD was 3 days old, she was hospitalized for jaundice and they wanted to monitor her intake. My family used to call me 'moo':giggle:
