Whooping cough is contagious until after 3 weeks of the coughing or 5 days of antibiotics. Our family all had it at the end of summer this year. DS3 (baby) was the only officially diagnosed one, but it was pretty clear we all had the same thing. Once DS was diagnosed, our ped put through prescriptions for us all to be on antibiotics. It doesn't affect the recovery time itself, just the amount of time that you can infect others.

I'm sorry you're having to go through this; it was no fun for us either. Not as scary as I had thought from just reading about it, but it's never fun when you have little ones sick. The coughing symptoms can reappear later on with other resp. infections until your body has fully healed, even up to a couple of months. My DSS and DS3 get them from time to time - DS3 mostly when he gets overexcited and is laughing hard.

i find my ds starts coughing that nasty cough when he gets excited and is laughing lots too. My oldest dd has no symptoms at all and is in school all day tg for 1 not being in the home,dh is at work and I'm home with ds and lil dd, lil dd seems to be just fine but as soon as i hear a cough I'm taken her in, I have no symptoms but again as soon as i start coughing I'll be taken myself in too. We have hospital masks here at home we are all useing, lil dd hates it so I have the ds and lil dd separate parts of the living room,, i know germs will still spread but there not as close as they usually are when playing..Ive turned to cartoons and it seems to be working lol so there both sitting separate sides of living rm:)

The best herbs I've found for fight whooping cough are Red Clover, Mullein and Elderberries. The first two are fabulous for any cough, w/and w/o congestion and Elderberries are fabulous for any illness. I made a tea of the red clover and gave it to everyone in the household and it was amazing! I had bought an elderberry tincture, but as soon as we move I'm buying bulk eldeberries to make tea, put in muffins and make my own tincture!

I get them from...

If you type whooping cough into the search engine, you'll get a ton of info! HTH!:hugs:

Croup is much easier! DS3 also had that recently (2 weeks ago). The WC was actually confirmed through a lab test, but with his croup they just did a general exam.

Glad it's figured out! I had always done motrin for croup, to reduce swelling in the larynx, but DS3 had been prescribed a steroid to help. But maybe that was just because he's so young (8 mos).

Croup is pretty easy to deal with. DS1 had it a while back... it sounds like a barking seal when he coughs, literally. I felt so bad, but it sounds worse than it is. The pedi had us up the humidity in the house, and just make sure they're comfortable & get plenty of liquids... all should be fine!

Hope your family feels better soon!
