DD is almost 15 months old , we've had trouble with her insurance so I was unable to take her to her regular doctor . I was told to take her to the pediatric urgent care . The doc there thought right away she has a uti and tested her for it and also put her on antibiotics . We got the real official results today which were positive . He wants me to finish the antibiotics and take her back for an u/s and blablabla , more tests ! Dd's insurance is supposed to be back to normal the 1st of March . Should I just wait to take her to her regular doc and see what they say . I really don't want her going through all that , is it really necessary . It's the first uti she's ever had .....

We have quite a bit of experience with UTI's here. DS has had 4 in the 12 months he has been alive, the first one at 7 days old!

His case is a bit different. He had tests done and u/s because he was so young. And then because they continued to happen. For your daughter, i really wouldn't be too worried about tests especially since this is her first. UTI's can be common in children. Now, if the antibiotic doesn't clear it up or she gets more UTI's, i would definitely go for the testing.

What antibiotic did they put her on? Did they wait until they got the urinalysis results back? Because some antibiotics don't work for UTI's, they have to check what the bacteria is sensitive to to make sure the antibiotic will kill the bacteria.

Couple things. If she isn't on probiotics already, it would be a good idea to start her on them. it'll help keep the good bacteria in check and hopefully prevent yeast infections/thrush. If you are nursing still, keep an eye on your nipples because you can get thrush if she has it in her mouth (trust me, NOT fun!)

Holy Smokes ! That doesn't sound fun at all . The doc put her on Septra before we got the results back . I talked to him today to tell me that the antibiotic she's on is good for it . No need to change . I am still nursing and I make my own yogurt with live cultures in it , so I guess maybe this is a good time to give her some . Thanks for the heads up , I didn't even think of that . (You think I would have since I get a yeast infection every time I'm on that ) I was also thinking it was a bit drastic to do all this for the first UTI .... If it happens again , yes , but right now .... a bit much . Thank you !

Oh , and how horrible on the tests and U/S ? They did a catheter to get clean urine and that was just plain horrible . :(

DD got her first UTI just after her 2nd birthday and she had to go through the renal ultrasound and the VCUG which was not a fun experience. But we found out she had Grade 2 bladder reflux which was what caused the UTI. She stayed on Septra for 18 months and we did the u/s and VCUG two more times. She still has the reflux but its not as bad (still Grade 2 meaning her urine does travel all the way back up to the kidney but not into the kidney, but its gotten progressively slower) and since she hasn't had a UTI since she stopped the Septra after 18 months, we don't have to go back until she is 8 years old (she is 5 1/2 now) unless she gets another UTI then we go in immediately.

The hope is she will outgrow the reflux by 8 years old otherwise she will need surgery.

How long is the antibiotic course? You should be awefully close to the 1st before they are out and should then be able to go to the regular pedi if you can get a quick apt.

Urgent Care docs ALWAYS want to do crazy-extra follow up since they charge out the sleeve for it! A regular pedi would more likely be more conservative or be able to give concrete reasons as to why further testing would be needed.

My dd has grade 2 as well. What's weird is that since being on the Septra for the last 2 years she hasn't had so much as a cold!

My dd wasn't tested for UTIs until she was 4 so it's possible she had them before. The reason they want to test for the urinary reflux right away Is to make sure the kidneys aren't open to damage. One in 10 kids actually has this problem, some as just more severe than others.
