Just curious. I am finally able to BW again and just purchased an Ergo for my 9 month old. We probably will use it for walks, hikes and outdoor activities like festivals/fairs. I am guessing some of you BW a lot more often. I wish I could do that but it just doesn't seem realistic with a toddler and DC kids. I am also helping someone up or down off the potty, picking up toys, bending, lifting, etc. I just don't see how a person can baby wear for extended periods with a larger baby (mine is already 20lbs). I love some insights. Tell me how often you use your carriers and how old your children are.

well my DD is only 3 months and i wear her all the time around the house and when we're out and about. for hours. my mom wore me as a kid too in kenya on her back for years

I wear my 14 month old DD and my 2 and a half year old DS quite frequently. Alot of the time I will wear one of them while we are out, usually my 14 month old but lately its been my 2 and a half year old because he gets into mischeif. At home it really depends on whats going on, I will wear DD alot on my back (back carries are a life saver!) if she is in need of cuddle time or if I need to get something done like laundry, sweeping floors etc. If she's sick she goes on my front and stays there pretty much all day. Sometimes my DS asks to go uppies just for a quick cuddle. Sometimes I end up having to wear both of them, DD on my front and DS on my back.

I have three, so I don't bw all the time. My youngest is the only one I wear now, and she is pretty happy at home in her swing or laying on her play mat. If she gets too fussy I will wear her, and she usually falls right asleep. When we are out I usually use my double stroller with the baby and 19 month old, and my 3 year old walks. When shopping sometimes I will wear the baby, and the 19 month old goes in the shopping cart. I also wore the baby when we went to the zoo last week and the other two were in the wagon.

I only wear my 6 month old - he'll be 7 months on the 11th. I have a K'Tan and wear him anytime we go somewhere. Around the house, I'll only wear him if he's fussy and I need my hands to do something. He prefers to crawl around the roam the house most of the time. LOL.

Daily. My DS is 7.5 months and I nanny for 15 month old twins, so between the three of them I am wearing someone about half the time I'm there :)

I babywear most days. Every time we go out, run errands, talk a walk, etc. I wear Ella. She's much happier being worn than in a shopping cart, for instance.
At home, I wear her when she's getting really fussy, or if I have to do laundry, dishes, cook, etc. Since she's over 25 lbs, if I'm going to wear her for more than a short stint at home, I usually put her in a back carry. It's also easier to get things done with my front side free :)
05-04-2010, 04:15 PM
I wear my almost 3mo dd old everyday. Sometimes its the only way I get anything done. She naps really well on my back either in a wrap or beco. I also wear her at the store and for errands and at church. She and I both love it. Sometimes I wear my 4yr old dd, like for going on hikes and the occasional trip to walmart. (she's very petite and only weighs 26lbs.)
05-04-2010, 04:18 PM
I wear my 8.5 month old (about 15 1/2 lbs) when we go a lot. If we are shopping, she will sit in the cart for about 10 min. or so, then want me to hold her. So I end up holding her, pushing the cart (with my 2 yr. old in it) and trying to not run into something, lol. Baby-wearing makes things so much easier! I don't wear her a ton when we are at home since she wants to be down to practice crawling and play and isn't a fussy baby at all. When she was a newbie, I would put her in the wrap and do everything, clean kitchen, unload dishes, sweep/mop, it was a lifesaver. :)

Everyday, several times a day. I wear both...always when we're out, one is in a carrier and the other one is in the cart, stroller or walking. I wore the big girl at the zoo all day last week in the Boba..it was great!
05-04-2010, 07:14 PM
Since I got a better carrier for a toddler, I wear her at least daily. When we go out, like the grocery, target, etc. I wear her the entire time. If I am cooking or vacuuming and DD is super cranky, then I will wear her on my back and she will fall asleep.

When DS was a younger baby (2-5 months) I wore him around the house when I needed to do something, or to get him to sleep. Back then I only had a Hotsling and a Baby K'Tan, which are great for tiny babies, but not for active older babies IMO. So from between 5 and 7 months I rarely wore him, only when I was desperate and put him in a hip carry with the hotsling (not comfy for me at all).
As weird as this will sound, DS is the most independent needy child there is. He can play by himself for hours and can be super content by himself. Yet he can also scream if you just move your eyes off of him. I needed a carrier for those times. Luckily FMIL got me a Babyhawk for Mother's Day (early present) and it's been so helpful. I wear Tommy once a day, maybe an hour total? minimum. If it's not super hot I'll wear him on our daily walk, and usually when I go into a store with just him and me (a longer trip, like a target or grocery store. Not running into the drug store). I also either wear him to all the Moms Club events, or at least have it on hand for if he falls asleep. I'm still getting the hang of the back carry by myself at least, and he needs to get a bit taller for it to be more comfortable.

I wear DD each day when we take the dog out for a walk, and I typically wear her if we go shopping (though she will occasionally ride in the cart, but not often). Otherwise, I just wear her around the house when she is cranky or getting into things she shouldn't I need to get some things done. Really though, she doesn't love being carried around the house that much anymore.
05-04-2010, 10:12 PM
DS is 20 months and I only wear him for errands like the grocery store. He's big enough to walk to the local park on his own (most of the time) and lately has actually been requesting the stroller for walks.
So probably once or twice a week.
When the new baby gets here, I'll probably be BW a lot, and I have a feeling DS will have a suddenly renewed interest in it as well.

Either DH or I will usually wear DD, 7.5 mo, at least once a day. Usually we'll need to wear her for one of her naps, or we'll put her on when we're getting things done around the house. I almost always wear her for walks or for going into stores for errands, or longer shopping trips. (I don't think she likes the errands much - it's either in and out of the car seat and into the carrier and back in the car seat, or too much time in the car seat!) Now that she's bigger, we're starting to learn back carries, because otherwise it's really hard to reach far enough forward to wash dishes, cook, etc, and I imagine back carries will be great for gardening! :-)

I used an Ergo a lot with my DS when I was out and about. I hardly ever used it at home. With a new baby on the way I plan to use a Babyhawk for around the house when she is very little and then use the Ergo as she gets older.
05-05-2010, 08:07 PM
I haven't worn my DD lately because I'm pregnant and carrying enough baby around, but I used my Ergo ALL the time. I basically never used a stroller or put her in a cart: carried her for shopping, walks, hikes, etc. I regularly wore her for hours at a time, especially when we went on vacation and walked everywhere.
NB: she was a lightweight baby...at 19 months she's barely 25lbs, so it might be harder to babywear so much with a heavier baby. I do think you build up strength as you wear longer and longer.

I'd love to have more carriers but reluctant to spend the money!
I usually use a stretchy wrap for my daughter (6 months, 17+ lbs) and sometimes my son (20 months, about 28 lbs I think.) I used to use it a lot for my son when he was her age and a lot smaller than he is now, before my belly got too big to carry him in it when I was pregnant again. I carried them either facing me or facing out. I sometimes use it at home if I really need to get something done or if she's fussy etc. but I usually just carry my LO's around in one arm at home. I usually use it when we go out grocery shopping or for a walk. :)
I do have a backpack carrier that we got off of freecycle that I use occasionally for my son but only really at home. I did carry him in it to the car once recently. He gets all excited about it, and my husband has carried him around in it at home as well! :D

I wear DD a lot. Whenever we're outside for whatever reason she usually ends up in a Ergo or RS at some point. Even when we are home she will come to me and ask me to pick her up, if I'm not busy of course I pick her up...but if I'm doing housework then I'll tell her "mommy's doing dishes/cleaning house, you will have to ride if you want mommy to hold you" and she is more than glad to ride around on my back in the Ergo while I do housework. She folds her arms in a cuddles close to my back, I love that I can have my baby so close pretty much at all times, especially since I'm a WOHM and feel guilt that I'm not with her enough as it is.
05-06-2010, 07:26 AM
I wear my 5.5 week old 24/7 (okay, so it feels like it anyways :giggle:). When she gets older, we won't wear as much.
05-06-2010, 08:08 AM
I wear my 7mo (18lbs) all the time!!! Hours a day, every day. I also have a 2yo and a 4yo so I understand always bending, lifting, helping wipe a butt, etc... So she's usually on my back in a woven, MT, or the Beco. At nite tho, we cuddle in the RS and if we're out, I still put her in a front carry.
05-06-2010, 11:03 AM
I BW at least a little bit every day. My older children are 4 and 6.5 though, so they don't need me to pick them up or anything. Now that it's getting hot out, I'll probably be wearing the baby mostly inside and using the stroller more outside though. I wore my first baby about this much, less wearing with the 2nd one, because as the OP said, I was always needing to pick up a 2 y.o., help with the potty, etc. I've found back carries really hard when you're home alone unless the toddler can get themselves positioned on their own.

2-3x week when we go out
my kid doesnt like to be held down when we're home, i can wear him on my back for 5min if i keep very active, he wants to go wild and get away from me (so much for AP kids being "needy"... hes the exact opposite)
05-06-2010, 11:15 AM
i wear my 5 month old daily. for walks, anytime we go shopping, and sometimes around the house, especially in the evening because she gets too fussy
05-08-2010, 01:45 AM
I wear my youngest who is 9 months at least some part of the day 6 days a week. It can be as little as 15-30 min or it can be hours broken up over the whole day. He is the youngest of 5. He is almost always in a woven wrap of some sort and on my back. He doesn't love it as much as my last baby did, but if I let him have at least one arm out, he's happy. My last baby wanted both arms in and snuggled up close to me. He's still a very cuddly kiddo <3
05-08-2010, 08:03 AM
When I'm home from work I wear my almost 3month old most days (if I'm not wearing him DH is). I wore my now almost-three year old all the time until he was around one. Then he became a major busy body and didn't really want to be carried any longer.

Elizabeth is 10 months old and just shy of 20 lbs. I babywear several times a day, every day. It's a lifesaver - I don't know what I would do without it!
I also take care of my friend's son who is super-high needs and 3 months old.
So in a given day, I use a wrap to get DC baby to sleep at least 3 times (the only way he will go down) and then I put him in the crib. If he won't transfer to the crib, I just switch him to my back and let him sleep up there. I also wrap him on my back while I am letting my daughter wreak havoc at the park.
The other night I was in Chili's with his mom and he was about to have a meltdown, so I wrapped him quickly and he was asleep in less than a minute and we both got to continue our meals.
My DD I wrap when she is consistently getting into something she shouldn't (grandma's bookshelf at work on Thursday and a friend's carseat yesterday), when she is tired/needs a nap and I can't stop what I'm doing. (This most often happens at dinner time, or when DC baby isn't ready to go down yet, but she is.) I just wrap her on my back and she will either go to sleep up there or contentedly come along for the ride. I also wrap her for walks, and going to the park, as well as every time we're in a store. We also wrap at festivals, fairs, malls, you name it.
Like I said, she's almost 20 lbs, and we have a looooong time wrapping ahead of us. If you have a good carrier, 20 lbs really shouldn't be an obstacle once you master back carries.

I babywear DD (13mths, 25lbs) pretty much everyday.. have a Beco Butterfly which I use for quick trips out and about.. around home and for longer periods I use our woven wrap.. Super comfy. Not sure how I would survive without my carriers.

I use my Ergo everyday. When my DS is fussy using the moby or ergo will be the only thing that will calm him down. I would love to figure out the back carry by myself as my little one is getting bigger everyday. He is 6 months and almost 18 lbs.
05-10-2010, 06:24 AM
before i got "big" pregnant (im 30 weeks) nearly every time we went out of the house. when DS was a small infant all i used was the sling. im sure when DD gets here she will be in the carrier a lot since i will have a 16 month old to run after :)
05-10-2010, 10:55 AM
I have an almost 5 year old, a 2 1/2 yr old and an 11 week old. I wear the baby daily. He's usually fussy around the time that the older boys are getting ready for bed (and I have to do story time and singing time), so he's usually in his sling during that time. Later in the evening the only way to get him to sleep is to wear him.
And of course I usually wear him when I go out, like to the store..... so I baby wear at least a couple of hours out of the day.. sometimes it's more like half the day.

I babywear my 7 month old several times a week. If we go out n about I wear. Sometimes I wear her around the house to have some cuddle time or to get things done if she is fussy. I like to bring her in it for shopping as long as I am not going to try anything on. We use the stroller for walks or if my hubby wants to push her around but needs to be free to play with our 7 yr old at the park. I don't wear her for long walks or for long periods because she is pretty heavy ( 20 LBS).
To make a long story short.. I wear my 7.5 month old about everyother day for a few hours at a time and also when we go on short jaunts that involve walking around so i can nurse at the store :)
05-10-2010, 11:22 AM
my ds is 18 months and I wear him every sunday at church during worship before the kids are dismissed to nursery/sunday school, and for activities like going to the zoo, the fair, sometimes for shopping trips, etc. He's 25 pounds and I don't bother wearing him aroudn the house anymore, he can walk :giggle2: I use my beco for convenience when out of the house. I plan to wear a lot more often than that when we're blessed with another another though.

I wear my littlest babe daily, & I can't wait to continue wearing my toddler again when I receive my ergo! i wasn't comfortable wearing her in my maya wrap anymore, but I know that I'll love her in my ergo. she is definitely mobile but needs that extra close time.
