I wouldn't...only because it has choking hazard written all over it. I get those things stuck in my throat. I can't imagine a 9 month old, without even having molars, being able to really chew those things up well.

I would buy those puffs like what Gerber Graduates make instead. Our grocery store makes a store brand.

I did find whole grain ones and I did try it. It was okay. DS only has 1-1/2 teeth, so he can't really "chew" it much. He just sucks on it. Of course I was sitting right there with him and watching him.

I'm just looking for bigger finger foods b/c he doesn't really put little pieces into his mouth on his own yet. But he will pick up larger things and suck/bite on them.

Any other ideas?

Our dd eats rice cakes all the time, they are brown rice, plain (well as plain as you can get, lightly salted). She's been eating them since she was about 8 months. There definitely was a 'gagging' episode in the beginning, but that would've happened with most anything that she needed to learn how to chew. She has 7 teeth now, but they are all in the front so they are not the ones being used to mash, babies mash with their gums where their molars would be if they had them.
I like using the rice cakes because I can break them up into smaller pieces (baby fist size) so she can hold them well and still get some into her mouth. And now since she is REALLY into the oopsie game, I can give her small bits and they can land on the floor rather than a whole rice cake getting thrown away (which is my complaint with her teething cookies....those get thrown away a lot).
But just like with cheerios (which she just started today) and any other food that needs to be chewed, we only give them to her when we are right there next to her when she is sitting in a chair. Also be careful to not feed your lo some pureed food while he has the rice cake in his mouth...we learned this one last night when dd was snacking on a piece of baguette while we were eating as well at panera and the bread was in her mouth but my dh didn't know it and he offered her some carrots and she went for it full tilt....only to succumb to true gagging that scared me half to death! She swallowed the carrots but forgot about the bread that was still in her mouth! quite a large chunk as well~ good thing dh is a nurse! :giggle:
Go with your gut, but we love our rice cakes, and anything your child eats can be a choking hazard-that's why you're there!

ARe you trying to say that something that melts in the child's mouth or is soft is the same risk as a rice cake which is like cardboard and doesn't dissolve very easily? I sure hope not. :headscratch:

What about those teething biscuits? I think the Gerber brand calls them Biter Biscuits. I think rice cakes would be too easy to choke on (like popcorn.)

I think whole grain rice cakes make a great snack, especially when on the go. Just break off bits to the appropriate size!
