Vitamin D for baby?

Should I give this to DD? The Ped said Breastmilk doesn't have enough Vitamin D in it and I should give her drops?

As long as baby is getting about 15min of sunlight everyday, then there is really no need for the drops.

We didn't for either of our DDs... although it was against the advice of the doc.

I never did with my older DDs and I won't with this LO either. We live in TX so getting sunlight is never an issue.

That recommendation is based on old, outdated and disproved research. EBF babies don't need vitamins unless mom's diet is seriously deficient in something.

we give our dd vitamin d drops as recommended by our doc. We do live in MN where its cold so she has not gotten much if any sunlight since she has been born.

Re: Vitamin D for baby?

Breastmilk is not 'deficient' in vitamin D - it's not supposed to have it. Vitamin D is not meant to be ingested, it is meant to be absorbed through the skin. Like many PP have said, take your LO outside for a few minutes every day, it's more than enough!

I was wondering this too, because my doc told me this same thing today and it was the first time I'd ever heard of something like that.

Re: Vitamin D for baby?

we do not give it to our kids ..

our pedi suggested/recommended it - saying that the sun exposure is too big a risk for skin cancer so they tell patients NO sun at all and give vit d drops.. i think thats silly as even the amount of sunlight you get sittin gby a window is enough.. and during the summer going out for the day and walking across a coupel parking lots gets enough sun .. (less clothes in summer) it has to be no sunscreen sun time though..
