Kids traveling alone.

If you have an preteen/teen at what age would you let them travel alone?

My oldest is 14 yrs old and I have agreed to let him fly to visit my SIL and her family. We've been talking about it for a while and we just bought the tickets and I am now very nervous about it.

By 14yo I was a seasoned traveler. I flew cross country several times per year changing flights in Chicago. I was very accostomed to flying though. Has he flown before? Is it a non-stop flight?

14 is fine. We did it when we were really little to our grandparents but it was a 45 minute flight/non-stop before all this drama. My step-son would fly cross-country direct at about 11-12 no issues (well, kinda but not flight related). If he doesn't have a cell phone, I'd get him one in case of emergency but he'll be fine.

My 7 year old DSD flies from GA to TX as an unaccompanied minor, we have to pay the fee for her assistance. She does wonderful! I know a lot of people scoff at her flying at such a young age, but when you have no other choice and funds are limited, this is what we have to do as a blended family.

I am sure at 14 he will be fine :)

I flew to Germany alone when I was 9 years old to visit family for 6 weeks. I had already flown several times within the US and to Europe, so I was perfectly okay with flying. My aunt picked me up at the gate and it was a fantastic trip.

My son started last year at 9. Texas to Hawaii. He does awesome...the only thing he doesn't like is me crying and kissing him as he leaves:( I miss him a lot. LOL

My brother and I were flying cross country at 6 and 8 together unaccompanied. We frequently had plane changes and did fine, though I was very responsible as a young child. Once we were about 8 and 10 I stayed less time and flew back earlier than my brother did.

Now that Im a mom, I cant imagine putting one of my kids on a plane alone.

I expect he'll be fine at 14. My sister's 13yo is going to her grandma's alone this year.

I went at about that age every summer. but I can't remember exactly. I do recall being very excited about my justin boots though and I got those in middle school.

I think my first flight alone (with my older sister) was when I was about 8 or 9. We flew from NY to CA to visit our cousins. My sister was 3 years older than I was. Starting at age 11, I regularly (once every 6 weeks) flew with my sisters by ourselves to visit our dad. This continued until I was 18. When my older sister couldn't go b/c of school obligations, I would go with just my younger sister. We flew so much we didn't even both checking in as "unattended minors." And that was in the days before cell phones! Your 14 year old will be fine. If you are super nervous, you can register him as unattended and take him directly to the gate, then your SIL should be allowed to meet him at the gate as well.
