I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

They have the stink so bad, I am so tired of battling it!!!!! I don't know what to try at this point. I've poured in a little bleach, I've boiled, I've vinegared, I've boraxed, I've rinsed, rinsed, rinsed. I'm in essence washing diapers on two cycles everytime I wash! The stinkies just keep coming back! HELP - I want to get rid of everything and just start over! It seems like I only had this problem when I started buying used. Please assure me that this can't happen with NEW diapers! I just used prefolds and covers with my son and NEVER had this problem, why is that?

Someone please advise me at this point because I'm about to put all these diapers to rest and start over and dh will have a FIT if I do that.

 :lostit:

Oh, and can my wool get the stinkies too? I don't want all my covers to get "infected" by my diapers. Please tell me that this can't happen!

I wonder if you tried wet pailing with some TTO if that would help? The instructions that came with my Sea Pearls said that TTO could remove odors, so I wonder if a few drops in a wet pail could help you with the stinkies?

I would *think* that any stinkiness that gets on your wool would be temporary and easily renmoved with a nice long bath in some good-smelling wool wash.

What kind of diapers are you using?

I usually throw some TTO in with the wash... no stinkies and my stash is new and used....

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

I don't think buying new would help. It would just take a bit before it started again.

I have found the only way to keep the stinkies away for good, and not drive myself insane, is to bleach every other wash. I was doing it every 4-5th wash and that just wasn't working. So, every other wash I do a normal routine then take everything but the inserts and plain hemp fitteds and wash those again with a TINY bit of bleach, double rinse. It's the only thing I've found to keep the stinkies 100% gone. This is much easier than all the rinsing and rinsing, adding boiling water, etc. My only problem now is I do have a handful of fitteds that I can't/won't bleach and they can get a little smelly, but not as bad as the inserts. I would seriously go to all prefolds except almost all of mine are dyed or tie dyed and I cn't bleach those either. I HATE using bleach, but it's a tiny amount, maybe 1/8 c, and I too could not stand the stinkies anymore.

Are they hemp? I know my hemp diapers once they get pee on them, the urine smell is really bad. Once I wash them they are fine. I usally also strip them once a week. As long as they don't stink after I wash them I don't mind.

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

I only used pockets, but to keep my inserts smelling clean. Once a week I wash with washing soda, and oxyclean and try to sun if the weather allows. I haven't had any issues. I use a lot of sherpa with burley cotton knit and these don't have any issues at all.....

Hope you don't have to start over. I don't think it has anything to do with used. Do you use a different detergent for your family clothes? Maybe you need to just deep clean your washer. The diaper hyena has a process there for that. I'm finding that it just a good idea every month or so to just really clean my machine. I have an older child and a husband with sport clothes and they smell much worse than any diaper. So the deep cleaning for our machine just made sence...

Good luck :hugs:

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

I'm now using Sensiclean and I use very little detergent with my other clothes. I use a variety of hemp/microfiber for fitteds, pockets and I also have some prefolds, which I think I am going to switch to until I get all this resolved. I am not just getting the stinky hemp smell, it's the ammonia smell which to me says build up, but I don't see how that is possible, kwim? Unless the boiling that I did last week wasn't enough. The smell was so bad this morning that it stunk up the bathroom and the two rooms closest!

It's just making me really tired right now.

Dude, I'm tired just thinking about all the work of stripping repeatedly to get rid of stinkies!

Have you done just a plain cold water wash to see if there are suds showing up when the dipes agitate? Do you do a cold rinse before washing? I know hot water can set stains, and I think I've heard that it can set smells ...

Ok, definitely try the wet pail thing. I actually filled the bucket with cold water and poured 1/4-1/2 cup white distilled vinegar , depending on how stinky they were, then let the dipes soak in it at least an hour before you do your normal presoak and wash. Helped TONS, even with hemp and microfiber the two worse stinkers in the CD world.

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

I'm right there with you! I spent all of last weekend boiling my inserts and they're starting to smell again already. I upped the water heater and it's not helping.

Last night I seperated my inserts and pockets. I washed the inserts on hot with a warm rinse to which I added 2 large pots of boiling water. I did 2 rinses that way and then at least 3-4 cold rinses (I got tired of boiling water, our a/c went out yesterday!)

I use such a tiny amount of detergent that I wonder if they're even coming clean. All week I was washing with simple green/washing soda, seeing no bubbles even in the wash cycle. Last night I used Purex F&C.

I'll second the TTO wet pail/cold soak idea. I had some hemp stinkies for the first time friday & I let them soak over night with vinegar & some TTO, and they are stink free. Hopefully it lasts!

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

I've had stink issues before and here's what works for me. I cut my loads down. I used to try to stick it all in one load. Now I break it up in two or three loads, depending on how long I wait to do the laundry. Plus, I use some Laundry Booster made by Dixie. I put that in the rinse cycle. I also recently started using some Pail Powder from Northern Essence. I have no more stink issues and I am really happy about that. My stink issues were gone with just the laundry booster, but the pail powder is just extra insurance. Oh, and I have a diaper sprayer now. :)

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

My cotton prefolds never stink, neither do my cotton fitteds. It's only the hemp inserts and doublers for me- and they can really stink up a room fast! I boiled all my hemp last week and have been washing with a vinegar rinse since then. I also don't put the hemp in the dryer anymore- just line dry. So far the sink has not come back. It's only been a week though. We'll see!

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

I've found a couple things that work for me. I had some inserts that weren't absorbing at all. They were microfiber and the diaper would leak but when I took the insert out it was barely wet...and they seriously smelled. Anyway, I read somewhere (for the life of me I can't remember where) to add 2-4 scoops of Oxyclean to your wash cycle to strip them. If that didn't work to use Dawn dish soap to scrub them clean. I used the Oxyclean twice and they stopped smelling and started working great.

I started having a problem again when we bought our front loader and I finally decided that it just uses so little water it can't wash everything out. Soooo, I tried setting it to auto soak before the regular wash and double rinse one day. No problems since then. :) It takes 2 hours to wash the diapers but their clean. I tried to do the wet pail method before I tried the soak thing. Seriously, have you ever tried to dump sopping wet clothes in a front loader without getting it all over you? :lostit: Don't try it...trust me.

I hope something works for you. I would cry if I had to start all over again...but I can totally understand your frustration.

We had stink issues when just using a pail but then we switched to a wet pail method with 3 caps full of Bac-Out and no more stinkies. :)

I also read that SportWash and Borax helps many moms vs stinkies.

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

So, how do I wet pail? I got a smaller can to try it out, but then I realized I don't know how much water to put in there and that maybe I bought a can that is too small! I have one of those big pails that they sell everywhere for CDing. Can I use that? I guess I can't use my bummis bag when I wetpail? Oh, and everytime I use TTO or Lavendar (I've tried both of those) I get the stinkies even worse! What's up with that? Am I using too much? When do I put it in?

Oh, and here's my routine:
~cold rinse
~hot soak for about 30 min.
~hot wash with double cold rinses (sometimes with vinegar in the downey ball)

See? I shouldn't have the stinks, but I do!!!!

Oh, and my gal goes through about 8-10 diapers a day and I wash every other day, sometimes every day depending on the stink. And there's usually never any pooped in diapers, she usually goes on the potty.

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

Thats the exact wash routine I use, washing everyother day....with the same dipes/inserts you have. I also use sportwash (sensiclean) or washing soda/simple green to wash.....BUT every other week or so I use a few scoops of Sun brand oxygen cleaner & dawn in the washer during the 30min hot soak. I havent had a stink problem yet.

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

I don't have a solution but can totally feel your pain. I never every had the stinks with my dd. We used the same type of dipes but lived in a different house. I can only guess that it's the water hear that is the issue.

I wash a full cycle on cold. Then I wash on hot with a little soap and an extra cold water rinse. Then I wash again on hot with no soap and an extra cold water rinse. I STILL find my dipes stink. I have tried bleach (maybe need to do it again), baking soda, vinegar, oxyclean, calgon water softener. Nothing keeps the stinks away permanently. Once I week I just keep on washing until I don't see bubbles. I swear it takes 4 extra rinses even though I hardly use any soap. Plus, even when I do it they still sometimes stink.

I guess I may try the bleach every other wash and see what happens. I just cannot run the washer 4 or 5 times every 3 days. It's just too much!!!!

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

if nothing else mama...you may have to use more bleach than you really want to at least the one time. i promise it won't kill your diapers from the one time...but throw a whole cup into the wash and then rinse your little heart out! you'll be pleasantly surprised at the end. like i said IF NOTHING ELSE WORKS! which it sounds like nothing else has worked...

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

Are you using regular vinegar? Or "flavored" ? I had some stinkies with some of my hemp inserts when I forst started using cloth, but ever since using Apple Cider, it's been fine. Give that a try.

I'm so sorry mama! I can't imagine how frustrating that would be! :hugs:

Re: I want to throw my diapers away!!!!!

I used only pockets with my second baby, and often had a really bad stink problem. We have some now because I got them as a gift for #3, but it's only been 3 weeks. But I seem to remember that using vinegar made them really bad. Switching to Sportwash definitely helped. And the inserts and pockets HAVE to be seperated before tossing in the pail. Now I'm using Allens Naturally, because that's what the FB site says to use, and line drying everything. So far, so good. Also, I would soak in warm instead of hot, and not for too long. Otherwise, you're soaking the stink right in.

P.S. Do you have hard h2O? We do, and that's why the vinegar doesn't work.
