K-12 highschool
Good Lord but I will have a highschooler next year!!! ahhhh!

We are looking into doing an online charter school aka K12 next year for our oldest. Originally this was not what we thought we were going to do but we think it might work better to get her ready for a program called running start which will allow her to take college classes her last two years of highschool so that she will graduate with her highschool and college AA. sweet!

So we think that an online highschool program might be better to prepare her for that but I am worried that we wont like it. So I am trying to get info and others opinions.

I'm going to be starting my son in the k12 system also. He is not in hs yet but I hear wonderful things about it. I think it is a wonderful opportunity. Good luck@

It is going to depend on the kid, I think, how much you like it. From all I've heard (and I was just discussing this with a mom yesterday), my oldest would have a hard time with it because there is not a lot of hands-on work in it. There tends to be a lot of reading, and it's a lot of work time. My oldest is only 7th grade, so I don't really know if it would be more work than choosing your own curriculum at home. It does give a few options kids wouldn't necessarily have otherwise. For instance, son of the mom I was speaking with yesterday is on the student counsel through k12.

I think it could be worth looking into and possibly trying for a semester or a year. You might also look into your daughter taking CLEP tests to completely skip classes. That would save money and time, but of course, she wouldn't get credit in both high school and college for that, just college.

I know there are other mamas here with kids that use K12 or Connections. I've heard mixed reviews. I agree with PP about CLEPing out of classes. Or even taking some college classes earlier, my local community college let me start taking classes as soon as I was in junior high.

my kindergartner is in k12. i love it! he likes it too. it's such a great program and you have a teacher. there's always outing and they are very flexible. you can go go fast as you want or on somedays you can slow it down. it's a great program.

Hi there!

I don't use a cyber school but I do have some friends who use them and I also go to their info sessions. I know a few materials from K12 also.

Like others have said you may love it or you may hate it or some where in between. It depends on the cyber, their requirements and what kind of student you have. I personally don't use a cyber because I know I would struggle w/ their demands. Others LOVE accountability and love all of the resources they get from the cyber. They provide you w/ all the materials and lots of support. They are also pretty good for advanced students allowing them to move up (from what I heard).

My suggestion is to go to their info sessions and to try to meet up w/ parents who use this particular cyber in your area. Try to see if it can work for your family. Don't worry about your DD not liking it because if you decide it isn't a good fit you can withdraw and go back to what you were doing.

Best wishes and keep us posted!
