He's on all the time!

Ladies, please HELP! He is my 1st and he's 5 weeks old. We had some initial latching struggles early on and have sine conquered those. He lost a little extra weight the first week so we were feeding him every 2 hrs, then we went to on-demand after that. I feel like he's on my breasts all the time. I have probably 1 hour where he's happy and not eating during the day. He does most of his sleeping by dozing after nursing and when I try to transfer him, he cries. Should I be worried that I'm not making enough milk? When I pump, 15 minutes yields a little over an ounce on each side. :banghead:

Totally normal, mama! Newborns' tummies are so tiny and BM is so easily digested, that they nurse very frequently. Also, this is helping to get your supply established. I remember feeling the same way. I know it's hard, but hang in there! Trust me, he won't always want to eat for what seems like always! :hugs:

Yep, dd was pretty much the same way. From your pumping output, it sounds like you have plenty of milk! It does get better, I promise!

You can always ask your pedi to check him for reflux. Annabelle would scream holy terror when I popped her off. The milk serves as an antacid.

Just a thought. But otherwise, it does sound like typical newborn behavior. You could get a ring sling so you could do stuff if you wanted.

Sounds normal to me...this is how we got hooked on a sling with dd#3, I'd never have been able to get anything done if I couldn't do it with her attached. They space feedings out more later, but try to enjoy it, believe it or not, you might miss all that close time.

totally normal. some babies are "snackers" and will literally be attached to the boob all day. Ive had 3 babies and the first 2 ate on their own schedule, about every 2-3 hours, however, this baby i just had 6 weeks ago snacks all day long. This is a good thing, it triggers your body into making lots of milk to keep up with his demands. Dont worry, he'll eventually develope a schedule the older he gets, you are doing awesome! keep up the good work!

Sounds like it could also be a growth spurt too. I remember it felt like my DD was attached to me 24/7 during those days.

Yeah, 5-6 wks is prime time for a growth spurt. Is he gaining weight well now? Having plenty of wet and poopy diapers? If so, you're more than likely making enough milk. Pumping is rarely a good indicator of what the baby is getting. Babies are much more efficient than the best pump!
