dialated already...
Mamas, I went to the doc yesterday. I am 40% thinned, -2 station and fingertip dialated. I'm nervous, I'm only 36 weeks. I really want to keep this baby in until 38 to 39 weeks. I don't want to deal with another pre term baby. What do I do?

Doc says she will be happy if I go this week because I'm attempting vbac. But I don't want to yet.

Re: dialated already...
((hugs)) I wouldn't get too concerned yet. Some women walk around 4cm dialated for weeks. Try and take it easy and rest.

Not all pre-term babies have trouble. I had a 36 and 37 weeker, neither needed any additional NICU stay or even visited the NICU. The just 36 weeker only issue was jaunice and a little trouble nurseing at first. Both went right home.

Relax. Take it easy. With both girls I started thinning and dialating at 36wks. By 38wks I was 50% and 3cen(dd1) and 4cen( dd2). I was still induced both times. At 40wks1day with dd1 and at 39wks2days(and I walked in at 80% and 4cen). So, just b/c youre thinning/dilating now might not mean anything :hugs:

Re: dialated already...
You can walk around dilated for a while before delivering. A fingertip is not much. With my twins, I was 3cms at 32wks (I did go into labor to get to 3, but they stopped it). Then, at 33wks, I was 4cms. At 34wks, I was 5cms. I didn't deliver for another 2wks at 36wks. I was still 5 at that point. Even then, they broke my water to induce labor because I really needed to deliver for other reasons at that point. So, I was 5 for 2wks and 3+ for 4wks. I know lots of women who are a dilated a little or even a lot like me and still don't deliver early. Personally, I would not worry. However, I would take it easy. :hugs:

Re: dialated already...
By my 4th pregnancy I was 4cm by 37weeks and 5cm for 6days before my water broke. Try not to panic. You never know this could be the baby that is thinking of taking up permanent residence:chuckle:

Re: dialated already...
I was 1 cm at 34 weeks, 2 cm at 36 weeks, and sitting right around 2 cm right now at almost 40 weeks...just relax and take it easy...dialating doesn't necessarily mean going into labor immediately.

Re: dialated already...
Also, think of it as a positive thing because it's that much less work to do in labor. I wasn't dilated at all with my first and it took 44hrs. With my last being 5cms for 2wks, they broke my water and less than 5 hrs later both twins were out. Much nicer, IMHO.

With DS2 I was 3 cm and 80% at 36 weeks. I rested and he wasn't born until 37.5 weeks. If you are only a fingertip and not having contractions (I was) then you should be fine.

Re: dialated already...
I was 3cm at 36 weeks. I went to 41 weeks with being 7cm without active labor yet so just because you are doesn't mean anything.

Re: dialated already...
I am always about 2 cm dialated by 36 weeks! Never had a preemie though! Just rest, and relax, and try not to worry!

babylove921 05-25-2012 02:13 PM

I was 36 weeks, and 50%, 2cm and -2.. don't mean a thing.

I had a 37 weeker, and she only needed to be in NICU because she had miconium (sp?) And as little water at birth as possible. So she had an infection. She was the heavy weight in NICU at 5lbs 9oz

Thank you, ladies. So happy to hear.

Re: dialated already...
Ya, I wouldn't stress on it too much, there is really no predicting through dilation or effacement that labor is imminent:) Some people walk around for weeks dilated and effaced. I was at +3 for SEVERAL weeks! Crazy low and uncomfy! Hang in there mama :hugs:

Re: dialated already...
Yeah, what everyone else said :) Are you having contractions? Dilation doesn't mean a whole lot without contractions, and a fingertip is not much really. I was dilated 2-3 cm for two weeks and went a week overdue. Also, baby isn't THAT low. -2 is still not fully engaged. This baby was at 0 and still nothing for a week. Apparently I just have a giant pelvis; I really wasn't that uncomfortable!

Re: dialated already...
With dd#3 I was 4 cm at 37 and didn't deliver until 39+. I thought for sure I'd be going in at 37 weeks to deliver but she wanted to stay put for over 2 more weeks.

Re: dialated already...
My ob told me that most women who had had children before are a fingertip dilated for most of their pregnancy. What you have to watch for more, is the thinning of the cervix, because it doesn't matter how dilated you are if your cervix is still nice and thick.

Also, -2 station is still floating right? So if the baby's head is not engaged, you are barely dilated, and your cervix is only partially thinned out, I would not be worried at all.

I was 3-4cm dilated at 36 weeks with my second and 3rd (about that far at 38 weeks with my first) and my babies were born at 38w 3d, 36w 3d, and 37w. Once I got to 3-4 and the babies head was engaged, that's when I knew I had about a week to go.

Re: dialated already...
I wouldn't stress too much yet!! 1- 36 weeks is considered close to the safe age to have the baby...and 2- with my last I was dilated 1-2 cm from week 31- until i delivered her at 38 weeks:) just try to stay off your feet and not do anything strenuous ;)

Re: dialated already...
Try not to worry -a fingertip dilated doesn't mean much. I hope your babe stays in a bit longer, and good luck with your VBAC!!

Re: dialated already...
1. Just because you're starting to dilate now doesn't mean you'll go into labor soon. You can walk around at a 4 for a couple of weeks, or you can go into labor at a 1 or 2 and then have your baby a few hours later. So.... don't worry just 'cause you're starting to dilate.

2. My oldest son was induced at 37 weeks due to my high blood pressure, he was totally fine.

If you're worried about hang out on the couch all day with your feet up, don't have sex or even orgasms. And just try to relax.

36 weeks isn't really all that early. In fact, I don't even think that 37 weeks is considered pre-term. Isn't 37 weeks considered "full term?" If that's the case.. you're only a week away from technically being full term.

Good luck and God bless!
