GOOD books to help a 5 yr old learn to read

Hi mamas!
We have a very blended family here and my DHs youngest son is 5 and still cant read. I do work with him when he is at our house, but I am wondering if there are any books out there to help me help him better? Seems that ages ago when I taught my kids it wasnt so hard! (then again it was a daily thing) ANY help here would be great!!

5 is still very young! Does kiddo have the ABC song memorized? Does kiddo recognize some of the letters & their sounds? How often does an adult read to the child? 5 year olds don't need to be pressured to read unassisted yet -- this can have the opposite, undesired effect....

If you go to any Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc. & ask for books for Pre-readers or Level 1 readers & just read read read *to* the child, he'll pick it up (unless there's a more serious underlying issue). These stores also sections for educators where you can browse through books on how to teach reading skills, etc. Even the local public schools may have extra copies of Reading Readiness guides. The biggest thing I could stress is to just read *to* the child on a daily basis -- books that kiddo enjoys hearing ;)

My dd was on the verge of reading from about 3 until she was 5.5. It just kind of clicked one day. I would recommend making a game of "sight words". You know like: I, am, the, at, to, do, with, etc.... Then encourage him to find those words in stories as you're reading. It really seemed to unlock the mystery for dd.

I used Hooked on Phonics for my son. Absolutely love that program. I also supplemented with Bob books and Scholastic's phonics readers. Both are great, bob books will probably be a little boring to a 5th grader...the phonics readers would probably be better. After the phonics readers then get the leveled readers and go from there. We have the Reader Rabbit Learn to Read System software and my son loved playing that too. It's a great game and it's excellent for learning the sight words. Also, my kids loved Leap frog letter factory and the talking words factory...it helps make it "click" about how the letters work together to make words. All great supplements!

We tried hooked on phonics as well as alpha omega and it really didn't work for our dd. She took right off as soon as we got the A Beka reading program.

Maybe get a small collection of easy readers, and give them to him as presents. Like, you could wrap them up and give him one every Friday night, and then you or your DH could sit down and work with him while the excitement is new.

Some good readers are:

Frog and Toad
Little Bear
Christian Liberty Nature Readers
Free and Treadwell Primer
Rod and Staff Readers
Dr. Seuss books

Silly me I forgot to post this. We're moving more towards this style of learning and wish I would ahve done it sooner. Here's a link to a curriculum and book list for year 1. Let me know if the link doesn't work:) I can't remember if you have to be a member or not. If you do it's free.
