Absorbency of various cotton, bamboo, hemp, & Microfiber inserts

My method for testing absorbency is you get a 4 cup glass measuring cup and fill it with more than what I expect something to absorb (or a whole number that is easy to remember) then pour over item in a bowl - "slowly" in case there is no reason to pour it all.

Some items like prefolds and flats need to be moved around a little or refolded differently sometimes.

I do that until it seems that the item is saturated. Then I hold up over the bowl (or the measuring cup) and see if it drips at all. Hold it there until it's at a very slow / no drip state.

I pour anything left in the bowl in the measuring cup and check amount. Then subtract.

Re: Any chance a bamboo flat or prefold could absorb near 20oz?

Hemp babies and Rainforest babies make some pretty absorbent inserts, but I don't know how much they actually hold. I find they take in a lot more than any prefolds or other inserts I had (even thick hemp insets - I find the thin ones take a lot more if they are layered, than one big insert). I've heard rumours that bamboo is even more absorbent though - would be interested to hear what others have to say!

Thanks! i actually "trust" hemp more because I have used it. I didn't know they made hemp flats and prefolds. I have an email out the company :)

So do you think Hemp is more likely to get closer to 20oz absorbency?

Please share what the companies responses are!

will do, I have questions out to three companies, I'm sure it will take a day or 2 for them to get back to me.

Re: Any chance a bamboo or hemp flat/prefold could absorb near 20oz?

I have Hemparoos x-large(blue stitching) prefolds and Hemp Babies Bigger Weeds.

I put each one in a glass dish and poured the water over them and then let them drip out any that came out. The Hemparoos held 16oz and didn't drip any out. The Hemp Babies Bigger Weeds held about 12oz. I poured 16oz on it, but it was dripping streams of water, and about 4oz ended up back in the baking dish.

I know that isn't very scientific, but I thought that might help you out some.

Re: Any chance a bamboo or hemp flat/prefold could absorb near 20oz?

thanks! I'll have to look into the hemparoos! We have older hemparoos in medium and they only held about 6oz if i remember correctly. That would be quite a big jump. They are getting pretty holey as well thou.

That is all I did to see how much absorbency my son needs at night :) in fact I did let it drip back in... I might have to do that next time...
