easiest way to applique?

An owl onto a onesie?

Go to the fabric store and but some Wonder Under. It's a double sided fusible interfacing. Iron it to the fabric you want to appliqué to the onesie. Cut the fabric to the design you want. Peel the paper and iron in place on the onesie. Stitch around the edges. I would do a satin stitch, otherwise the edges of the appliqué will fray. If you like the frayed look, stitch it any way you. Continue this pattern with each step of the appliqué.

If you don't like to see as much stitching and don't want frayed edges on the appliqué, you can do a turned under appliqué using freezer paper for a stencil, but its a lot more work.

Can I applique without interfacing? Using fleece?

Fabric spray adhesive will hold the applique in place and you can zigzag stitch around the edges.

I have, but haven't had the best luck with it. The fabric always seems to move a bit. The ones I've done with interfacing came out much better.

I forget what it is called, but I love to sew the appliqué under the clothing and then cut out the material on top.

Yes but it take tons of patience and pinning!

Definitely with the double sided sticky interfacing. The kind I use is called Steam-a-seam 2. Some kinds will gum up your needle, but this stuff doesn't. Good luck!

You can but you'd have to glue or hand baste your applique to make sure it stays in place. First is quicker and easier. Especially if you have several pieces.
