I need to find a sitter to watch DD a few hours twice a week but I am afraid to trust anyone. I almost want to install cameras in our home in case I find someone who I think is wonderful and turns out to be Mommy Dearest. I probably sound crazy but this is my child and I am sure you all can relate.

She's only a few days shy of seven months so it isn't like she can actually tell me, "Yo, Mom that sitter you got for me ain't gonna cut it."

I attempted to look a few months ago and it was kind of scary the responses I received.

Any suggestions would be great. :)

Re: Sitters
I second, I myself am a nanny on there and so far its been great. Also if you are super worried get a nanny cam, I've worked for families who've had them.

Re: Sitters
Do you have any friends or family that can sit for you? Do you have anyone that can recommend a sitter?

Also, check your state laws before recording someone without their knowledge!

Re: Sitters
I don't think you're crazy; I haven't been able to let anyone beside grandparents or a few close friends watch our kids, ever.

I think that getting recs from friends would be a great place to start.

I don't think you're crazy at all. That's all I've got.

Re: Sitters
The only people I ever let watch my son are my husband and Mom, and at your sons age I was still popping in to see how they are doing. Now that my son is 2 we let his parents watch him once on a date for 2 hours (it was heaven). I don't blame you for being scared, I am scared too. My cousin (age 10) was sexually molested at an aftercare program, as were a bunch of other girls. This world is a scary place for kids.

I would ask people you trust. DD was never left with anyone for the first year (DH was deployed) and anyone other than DH once he got back.

It was very stressful to me when we had a couple mandatory military engagements coming up when she was about 22/23 months old. Family isn't an option since we're far from family.

I chose a nanny that I knew from a mom's group she brings the kids she nannies to. I saw how she was with them and knew I could trust her.

Now, she's pregnant and I need a sitter when I go into labor. I'm asking people I trust to find someone. And I'm asking her who she would trust.

Word of mouth is very good. I like mother types, but then there are too many parenting philosophies that you may get one who believes in spoiling babies by holding them too much (which is opposite of how I feel), so you have to be careful with mom types. My sister likes high school kids because they're usually so enamored by baby that they just hold them and play with them and interact constantly - obviously not all teens would be this way, you'd have to know them.

Re: Sitters
I would ask friends or family if you have them nearby if they know anyone.

We have a very large family, so we've only asked people outside of our family to watch our children a handful of times, and they were always friends of the family.

You're not crazy. Kids are not replaceable.

I would get a nanny cam no questions asked. As a matter of fact being more worried than most I would get 2. One the nanny knows about and one she doesn't know about in case she tries something not in the view of the first camera. How is that for crazy?

Ask family and friends you trust for referrals.
