Iron Supplement side effects

So, as of last week I have had to start taking an extra iron supplement per the Dr. This was fine for the first week, but starting yesterday I've been having some pretty annoying side effects.

Is there anything that will counteract the side effects (D, nausea, stomach pains) of this supplement w/o negating its effectiveness? Not taking it isn't an option unfortunately, and I have tried taking it w/food and w/o food. When taken w/ food I get nausea/D, when taken w/o food I get stomach pains so bad I can't move. Either way, I've been pretty much confined to the house :(.

Any suggestions?

Try a different type of supplement. Various brands and types sit better in my stomach. I can get spatone here which is a natural iron rich mineral water which my body seems to tolerate much better. Also always take your iron with vitamin C, a glass of OJ or similar so that it absorbs better.

Constipation? Try more fiber and water. Maybe even a laxative?

Nope, constipation is the one issue I don't have :) It's mostly diarrhea/nausea when taken with food, and severe stomach pain when taken w/o food.

Try a different type- I take one by Solgar that is absorbed well, and doesn't give the side effects like traditional supps- it is a chelated Iron, and has worked well for me- was recommended by my SIL who has been taking it for years.

Looks like I definitely need to find another type. I just picked up the one that Kroger had, since it was the only brand available and the Dr. said it didn't matter which one I took so long as it was an OTC iron supplement :(. I'll see if I can find somewhere around here that has other options

Quick google search came up with this:

"Therapeutic doses of iron supplements, which are prescribed for iron deficiency anemia, may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, dark colored stools, and/or abdominal distress [33]. Starting with half the recommended dose and gradually increasing to the full dose will help minimize these side effects. Taking the supplement in divided doses and with food also may help limit these symptoms. Iron from enteric coated or delayed-release preparations may have fewer side effects, but is not as well absorbed and not usually recommended [64]."

You can try ferrous gluconate since you probably have ferrous sulfate and try taking it at night.

what about trying the liquid iron that is plant-based? Floradix is the kind I used and my body absorbed it way better than the pills and aside from a gross taste, I had no side effects like the awful pills gave me.

I second the suggestion of Floradix. It is what my midwife recommended and has worked well for me without side effects. I take it with a small glass of OJ.
