Tylenol....should we really use it for our kids/

What is your take on using tylenol for...let's say teething. I'm trying to discourage my sister-in-law from using it every night for her 5 month old. I just don't have any good information to send her. Can anyone help me out?

Teething tablets don't work because they are a milk base and she throws up after having them.

Thanks!

Mandi

Every night seems a little odd to me. How long has the baby been teething? I'm ok with using tylenol, though I prefer the teething tablets, but does the baby actually need pain relief, or has the mom just gotten into the habit of giving it to her? Are you more comfortable with motrin, or are you looking for something more homeopathic? I've never heard of anything besides the tablets, but I'll be watching to see if there are any other suggestions.

actually, it is my opinion that children are seriously undermedicated for teething pain. people are so afraid to pollute their dc with a 'drug' that the child often suffers. if the child seems more comfortable with the tylenol, i would certainly give it. in my opinion.

tylenol is a very safe med and very well studied. whereas constant untreated pain is harmful to the growing child b/c it increases stress hormones, causes crying and distress and may interfere with nursing.

Everything in moderation. There are SO many alternative ways to treat everything that don't involve modern drugs.

If the baby is truly still teething and in pain and Mom is using the right medicine, right strength, right dose, it is safe. I've heard it said that if adults dealt with teething pain, we'd need narcotics. I'm not sure which natural methods to suggest is what she's tried isn't working. Perhaps just make sure she has the right type of meds for her baby and if the child's doc is ok with it being used like that. The real dangers from tylenol come from it being incorrectly (wrong dose, wrong strength).

Truthfully I prefer motrin but I always try a cold wet rag or a frozen bagel first.:2cents:

Tylenol didnt' seem to work for DS. Motrin helps but I only give it to him on rare occasion when he is screaming and can't sleep. Personally I try to avoid the drugs, but I dont' think the do any harm with occasional use. Their livers are immature at this point so I can understand not wanting to give it to them regularly.
The Camilla drops by Borion are homoeopathic and they work better than the tablets for us. I use them almost daily when he goes through a bad teething bout.

Hylands has a teething gel that is very effective (knocks the fussies out right away so it must work well). I don't buy the if adults teethed they would need narcotics. I remember how it felt to have my 12yr molars come in and it isn't that bad. Heck even with my wisdom teeth seriously impacted they didn't hurt so badly I needed narcotics. I also didn't need narcotics for any of the multiple extremely painful orthodonic procedures I endured as an adolescent. I think giving an infant tylenol everyday is just an easy out. It probably makes the baby sleepy and so she keeps doing it to make her life easier. I personally don't give my kids tylenol at all. I give motrin when they are extremely sick. But seeing as my oldest won't take medicine at all and my youngest has never been particularly sick they don't get it often. My youngest has all but 4 teeth and never needed anything more than a cold chew and hylands and some nursing.

And before you ask, no I don't take meds either unless there is a very good reason. I don't think every little annoyance should be medicated.

Babies NEED something for teething pain. I had a wisdom tooth out a while back and WOWZA! I was dying. I was taking Vicodin, Motrin, Tylenol, you name it, nothing was working! :(

I give Jack Motrin when he teeths. That, Hyland's Teething Tablets, and his Amber necklace. I'd much rather give Motrin than Tylenol. Tylenol doesn't work for me or Jack. Never has.
