My DD was just diagnosed as being anemic...update in post 13

SHe is 15 months and still breastfeeds a ton during the day. She has a million food allergies (ok not really but seems like it) and can't have peanuts, eggs, dairy, peas, carrots, apples, bananas, the list keeps going.

Anyways at her 15 mo apt the dr wanted to test her for anemia because she is so pale and the results came back that she is at 8.6 and should be at 11 1/2. So we need to give her 18mg of iron 2 times a day.

I feel like I have tried to hard and overcame so many barriers trying to nurse her and I can't believe we have gone so long. But am I hurting her? Can I help her by increasing my iron levels? On top of all this she has been bleeding out of her butt after poops so we also have to have her see a Pedi GI (again) at Children's and have a scope done in 2 weeks to find out where it's coming from. I am so scared and worried for her right now. I don't know how to fix her and I am so upset. Do I keep nursing her? She doesn't eat many solids at meal times so I feel this is how she is getting all her nutrition..well maybe not. Sorry I am rambling. ANyone else have a little one with Anemia? Will she be ok? Is this life long?

Thanks

:hugs: Mama it's ok. I think it's great that you are still BFing!! Keep it up. Go ahead and give her the supplements and start trying to increase her natural iron intake via solid/pureed food. Does she eat meat? It'll be ok :)

Have you heard of EE (eosinophilic esophagitis)? A very dear friend of ours had a DS suffering with this. The things you mention sound very similar. It is rather rare and most people seem to have never heard of it. Our thoughts are with you for a healed healthy Little One.

We actually saw a pediatric GI at Children's in February to look into EE. At the time the Dr didn't feel she had that (they didn't scope her) because her reflux symptoms only flared up when I ate something she was allergic to (I was ebf at the time...still am nursing now but addind more solids). The dr. felt that he would not get an accurate scope because I had been on an elimination diet for 5 months at this time and so she wasn't being exposed to the issue foods. And he didn't want us to expose her to them just to scope. He also said the course of action with EE is to eliminate and avoid trigger foods and reflux meds which we were doing (she doesn't take them anymore).

I will ask again when we see him in 2 weeks. He wants DD to be on an iron supplement for 2 weeks to try and up her iron levels before they will scope. I am not sure if they will just do a rectal scope since she was having blood after pooping or if they will do an upper as well. I am waiting for them to call us with an appointment.

I just feel so discouraged because I have tried so hard to keep nursing her. I have been on an elimination diet of milk, eggs, peanuts, nuts, peas, beans, oats, carrots, etc. going on 9 months. I have had numerous blocked ducts, mastitis, supply issues and so on but 15 months later she is still nursing. Now I find out my milk is not giving her the iron she needs and now this. I am just feeling like maybe I should have put her on a hypoallergenic formula which would have given her more iron.

Any tips on how to get her to eat more iron foods or can I take more supplements or eat foods to up it in my milk for her?

My ODS was slightly anemic from about 9 months. We gave him iron drops. Just make sure you don't give it to them with milk. It's best to give OJ with it. I also tried to give him lots of iron Rich foods. He really likes strawberries so I would give him those and he was a pretty good meat eater too. I think homemadebabyfood.com has a list.

You are doing a great job!!!! Formula has added iron because it MAKES babies intestines bleed and they become anemic. BM is the perfect food. You are giving her antibodies and lifelong reduced risk of numerous diseases. You will figure out what is going on and i assure you nursing her is a gift you are giving her.
I'm sure you have, but have you gone gluten free? My son had a lot of food allergies as a baby and now at 10 he is prettying fine. It will get better.:hugs:

I was just crusing on this board and saw your question. Adding iron to your diet will not increase it in your milk. Try to offer more beans and meats if she isn't allergic. With a number that low I would supplement with the iron drops. As a previous poster stated offer with Something with vit C.

The anemia is probably from bleeding. Most kids with food intolerance also have acid reflux. That causes bleeding in the esophagus. I am so sorry I feel really bad for you, this is very serious. If it's reflux you may have to pump & thicken the milk. This type is genetic, both my babies have had it. When is her GI appointment? xoxo hugs mama. I know how hard it is to see your baby suffer. Mine was pooping blood too :-(

Ps: esonophillic esophagitis does sound like a potential culprit as well

Have they checked her clotting time? My son had bleeding at 2 months old and the first thing his doctor did was check his clotting factor(?) with a blood test. When they came back normal he saw the GI specialist ASAP and was scoped (rectally)... He was very irritated all the way up.. Idk how far they went but... Everything was inflamed. I don't know if this helps at all. I hope you get answers for your DD soon.
