Are bigger prefolds more absorbent? And what do you think of this fit?

My almost 2 year-old has been in red-edged GMD's for a long time. We mostly just trifold into PUL covers, but now that Fall is upon us I plan to snappi and use more of our wool longies and covers. This morning he completely soaked through two diapers (and his clothes) in less than an hour, so I'm wondering if maybe he needs a bigger prefold? Will it make a difference in absorbency?

Here's a picture from this morning. How does the fit look? Should I maybe be looking for some brown edged? Will that help? Obviously I change him as soon as I realize he's wet, but it's not always going to be practical to change him twice an hour! Thanks in advance!

Yes, IMO that looks too small. I would go up a prefold size for sure.

Rather than sizing up, I'd add some sort of doubler.

I've not used prefolds yet (mine are OTW), but from pictures that I've seen, that looks too small. I would think that bigger would be more absorbant (as long as it fits him) because it wouldn't be squished. Kind of like compression leaks in mf? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Since he is leaking I would. He looks big enough to fit well in browns.

Thanks! He's 24ish lbs. I think I'll go ahead and pick up some browns.

Any tips on how to make do in the meantime? Will trifolding a newborn diaper into the center work as a doubler? I'm worried that might be way too bulky though. Might have to stick with trifolding, PUL covers, and frequent changes for now.

yes, definetely go up a size and/or add doublers. more fabric = more absorbancy!

I would try bikini twist or add a doubler when trifolding before sizing up. Unless you get premiums (4x8x4), the increase in absorbency from the couple inches on the edges in the next size isn't going to do much. My DD (17mos) can pee straight through a premium in angel fold but not bikini twist or trifolded.

I would size up and use NB pfs as doublers in the wetting zone.
