Baby like rice crackers and purees, but nothing else!

My DD just turned 11 months on Saturday. She drinks formula and water from a sippy, loves her purees and rice crackers (Mum-mums) and puffs. I cannot for the life of me get her to eat any solid foods. She will stick them in her mouth, mush them around a bit and then spit them out and start screaming/crying. Every. Single. Time. Any suggestions? She's interested in foods, but I think that it's really a texture issue. Even the Spouts 3, she'll mush a bit and then spit out. And when she does swallow, she gags and gags and gags. :gah:

Sounds exactly like my 9 month old!! Down to the fact that he loves the mum-mums! :)

Is your pediatrician concerned about this? I would not worry about it as long as she's eating enough food in general - no rush for it to be in solid form. Have you tried doing chunkier purees so she gets used to chewing a little bit before she goes on to 'real' solid chunks?

Sometimes adults have to eat pureed food for a variety of reasons, and they still maintain a healthy weight and get the nutrition they need. Keep offering the solids and she'll take them up when she decides it's time.

Thanks for the encouragement. We have tried some chunkier purses and some she will eat and some she won't. Her weight is fine, in fact better then fine. She came into this world at 3lb. 13.5 oz. and now she weighs just over 19.5 lbs! I'm just going to keep trying and sooner or later she will get it.

Good girl packing on those pounds! ;)

It can be so frustrating though, I know. Our son hated purees for the first 6 weeks we were doing them...gag, gag, puke, gag, spit, cry...it was awful, I hated it but I knew we had to keep trying so he could learn the motion to swallow, etc. Then one day it was like it just clicked. He figured it out, and once he knew how to get it down his throat he couldn't get enough of it.
Now he's the same way with true solids...makes faces when he gets them in his mouth, gags, fusses, etc. I keep trying to remind myself that it took a while with the purees, and it may take a while with the solids, but hopefully one day it will click and he'll chomp everything down!
