alaska gear for babies?

Hi ak mamas!
I am finally moving back up to ak, and am so excited! I used to live there as a nanny, but now I've got my son in tow :) I wondered if anyone has any suggestions on winter/outdoor gear you found especially great or even a necessity? Also, best places to buy...I think I'd rather buy now and ship it up with me, rather than wait 'till we get there and order it up. I'm heading up sometime around february.
I'm thinking:
boots
under layers
gloves
socks
?

I've got a pair of over-booties kinda like the stonz, but am thinking I should be getting him some actual snow boots, too. ideas?
also, are the under layers that rei sells up there good, or should I look somewhere else for some wool/silk stuff?
Thanks!

Apocalypse design in Fairbanks has amazing things! Where are you heading to? There is so much climate diversity up here, you might not really need much winter gear after all :)

Anchorage area. I've lived there before, but never had to buy little gear :D
