This is a thread to support people that are either changing or have changed to the ideas that Weston A Price pioneered. They are most noticeably found in Nourishing Traditions. I have also added GAPS to this as many people here do that as well. GAPS you need to ignore the dairy and grains. :) (correct me if I am wrong)

Hi Jennifer :) what's the weston price diet? I've read some of his info. on raw milk, but that's about as far as I've gotten. We're going grain/sugar free around here. Is that what it is?

Weston A Price was a dentist that was curious why people were coming in with a host of tooth issues. So in the early part of the 20th century he travelled the globe and found "primitive people" and found out that they didn't have tooth issues. He figured out it was related to diet and soon after laid out his findings.

Yep, sounds like what we're trying to do :) If I could, we'd leave it all, go live on a farm somewhere and grow our own!

Guess what?! My friend in town (CO) just told me that there is a support group here for NT/Weston Price "people". Apparently they get together once a month and have a potluck. New members can just come and taste the first several times. Cool! Is there something like that where you all live?

One of the WAP leaders is also the holistic moms network leaders. She has told me they are not very active here. I can see why, many people around here have 1+ hour commutes each way.

WAP isn't grain & sugar free. Just properly prepared grains & refined sugar free.

That sounds awesome! I don't know of any groups like that near me. I did see there was a WAPF leader in my area. I tried to contact her, but didn't hear anything back :(

Okay, mamas... I'm just going to think out loud here. It's how I process.

Those of you who subbed the January thread know I was trying to figure out my possible celiac diagnosis. After having my thyroid and iron levels checked by an MD, and being told, "well, your iron is a little on the low side, so just eat more green leafy veggies," and then going to an ND for a second opinion because I knew "low iron" couldn't be the answer to the weight loss side of my conundrum, she sent me back to MD to have celiac panel done.

Got the results Wednesday. Negative.

Now, when ND looked at my first panel of blood work, she pointed out that my Blood Urea Nitrogen was low in regards to the protein levels I was consuming. I was a 9, lab says normal range is 7-25. From the research I've done, low BUM levels generally mean a diet low in protein. She looked at my food diary and said, "for the amount of protein you're consuming, you should be at like.. an 18." She thought this was an absorption problem, and pointed out that if I'm not absorbing protein, I'm not going to absorb certain other minerals, et cetera, basically resulting in my drastic weight loss / malnutrition.

So, she gave me probiotics for some candida issues we suspected I was having (yeast infections off and on, stomach pains back in August that were cured by going on a modified candida diet briefly), as well as Metagest, a Hcl / igestive enzyme supplement to be taken in conjunction with aloe vera gel.

Well, I got my blood work back on Wednesday,and I'm negative across the board for the entire celiac panel. Not even a faint positive. Nada.

BUT, while I haven't been able to purge the house of gluten, I totally cut out the immense amount of whole wheat pasta I was eating to tryto boost my calorie intake, and have been trying to avoid other gluten-containing foods. I've been eating potatoes and brown rice as my starches, with some lentils and split peas in soup, as well. Oh, and frozen sweet corn. But no wheat, barley, oats, etc.

And I am feeling a little better. Still fatigued, still underweight, but... feeling a little better.

Now, I know you can get a negative celiac test and still have it. (For those who asked in the other thread, I had not cut gluten back in my diet for more than two or three days prior to the blood draw, and for the amount of whole wheat I was consuming prior t that,I don't see how I could have healed up enough in that time frame to precipitate a negative, if I -do- have a gluten sensitivty and therefore those antibodies).

I have been somewhat familiar with WAP n the past because of the raw milk side of things (as well as grassfed meats) but have never really fermented anything (except eating yogurt, I love yogurt). And in all my research lately I came across this page:

And she talks about the whole phytic acid thing, and how phytic acid STOPS THE ABSORPTION OF CERTAIN MINERALS.

I read that part and was just like, "Woah, wait, what?"

My hypothesis when I thought I had celiac was that I kept throwing more and more whole wheat calories at myself and all I was doing was irritating my system more and keeping it from absorbing more and more nutrients because it was DAMAGED.

But now I am wondering: the more and more whole wheat calories I was throwing at myself, the more PHYTIC ACID I was putting in my system, the fewer nutrients I was absorbing... yes?

I'm going back to the ND on the 16th for a follow-up, so I'll be asking her all this then, but I needed to talk to SOMEone about it before then, and y'all seemed like a great place to start.

Any input? Anyone here been "malnourished" from whole wheat, either from the ceiac angle or the phytic acid angle?
