Update! Cysts are Gone!! ~~ Choroid Plaxis Cysts on Ultrasound

Update: Had our ultrasound today. Holy cows, was it thorough. I laid there for about 90 minutes. Baby was all over the place and actually completely flipped over 3 times during.

The cysts are gone and they found no other markers for trisomy. Doc said we could do an amnio for more peace of mind, but hinted that it probably wasn't necessary. We got a bad-arse 3D picture of the baby though. Holy adorable.

I'm pretty high on life today. I feel like I just exhaled after holding my breath for a year!!

I think my OB did a good job of trying to ease my fears on the choroid plaxis cysts found on my ultrasound, but I guess I'm just looking for anyone else who has experienced this and your outcome.

The cysts are on the baby's brain and are a "soft marker" for trisomy, but are most likely just that - cysts. And they might or might not resolve and it won't affect brain function at all. But that word - trisomy - scares the shorts off of me.

I was scheduled for the "ferrari" of ultrasounds in 5 weeks and a meeting with a perinatologist, but only because it's the kind of thing you just can't ignore, not because my dr is actually worried. He says he sees at least 2 cases of these cysts a month and they are almost always nothing. I'll also have an option for an amnio if the ultrasound finds more markers.

I'm not worried. But I am.

We had this with my last pregnancy. I was freaked out, but not really. We had a follow up ultrasound (not even a special one)at 30+ weeks and it had resolved itself. There were no other markers(or whatever they are called) so we weren't too worried but it is something you want to follow up on.

Like your dr said, it is almost always nothing.

here is my post on it.

Thank you! I appreciate you digging that up for me. My next ultrasound will be at about 25 weeks. I wonder why I need to see such a specialist, or if that's just standard procedure for my OB. I need to Dr. Google a little. I'm nervous but I'm not. I'm going to try to carry on as though everything is fine.

We had the same thing with DS, choroid plexus cysts at the 19 week anatomy scan. The OB had us do a follow up u/s (again, not a special one) at 32 weeks to reassure us and sure enough they had resolved themselves. His "dont-stress" reaction to the cysts was 2-fold. First, he said that since DS didn't have any other "markers" (enlarged heart chambers was one he mentioned I believe) that it was likely to resolve itself. Secondly he said that choroid plexus cysts are actually pretty commonly found at the anatomy scan. It's one of those instances where such advanced technology can actually be a detriment: they see "problems" where there aren't any actual problems.
Try not to worry yourself too much mama!

I had the same thing at my 20 week ultrasound. My LO had no other markers so by the time we went back at 28 weeks I was completely calm. We saw a maternal fetal specialist for the 28 week scan. It was 3d. Don't worry- it'll all work out fine.

Re: Choroid Plaxis Cysts on Ultrasound

My midwife explained that for many babies CPC's are almost a developmental thing: they occur in upwards of 50% of babies and dissolve on their own, it's just a matter of when you have your ultrasound if you happen to catch them. They're seen most often in ultrasound done at 17-20 weeks. That's why the next course of action is always-always-always another ultrasound in 4-6 weeks. That is plenty of time for the cysts to resolve themselves. :)
Also, the fact that your baby ONLY has cysts and NO other markers is excellent. According to the Trisomy 18 Foundation, if a baby only has one marker on the ultrasound it is HIGHLY unlikely that they have T18. It's such a profoundly affecting defect that it is nearly impossible for there to be only one symptom, even in mosaic T18. :) HTH!

DS2 had bilateral CPC's at my 18 week scan, they had both resolved 4 weeks later. He also had short femurs(another soft marker). DS3 had a echogenic heart focus and short femurs. All these "soft" markers added up to two perfectly healthy babies. Try not to stress mama, everything will be fine.

My son had one at 17 weeks as well, It was gone at 23 weeks. He had no other markers and is a perfectly healthy 8 year old. ;).
