AFP TEST???

I go for my next appt on the 30th and Dr. wants to do AFP test, I have heard/read so many mixed reviews about this...what are your thoughts? I am not a worrier unless I have reason to, when we had DS in 2008 I had to have a level2 ultrasound at 16w (forgot reason, will ask on 30th) and they found a white spot on his heart, this was how it was explained to me (I may have stats wrong but bear with me): 90% of kids who have Down's Syndrome have a white spot on thier heart...BUT 90% of kids who have a white spot on their heart DO NOT have Downs Syndrome. So they said that an Amniocentesis was highly recommended to determine if he had it or not...so we did the Amnio. He did NOT have Downs. We had to wait about a week or so, maybe 10 days to get results, i wasn't a mess...we didn't tell family so they wouldn't worry (MIL is HUGE worrier) and all turned out well, besides my gigantor baby (10lbs birth; left hospital 4 days later at 12lbs). I am hesitant to know 'ahead of time' if there are genetic issues because i don't know how I will feel, but on the other hand, I will have time to prepare, learn, join support groups, learn ways that may help me cope with daily routines, etc. I just don't know enough to decide. Another issue is that our health insurance is worse now, still great compared to most, but we only paid the $40 copay for specialist to confirm pregnancy and $250 for inpatient hospital visit...period...now we have a $400 deductible and 90/10 coinsurance...my son just had an endoscopy to rule out celiac disease and it was supposed to be $400 + 10% of procedure ($3500) but it had cost us $400 + $700 (don't ask how...I am still scratching my head and on the phone with ins and billing depts.). Don't misunderstand, I think ANY of us would give ANY amount of money to provide medical care for our kids, but I am very frugal person and I like negotiating too and would like to not only pay for what I owe, but UNDERSTAND how I owe what they say I do...LOL

Re: AFP TEST???

That is for sure a hard one. Would you have the test after the u/s or before? I guess for me personally, I wouldn't want to do anything invasive unless there is something on the u/s like with you DS....

I also totally understand the wanting/needing to be frugal, especially with medical bills! They sure do add up quick don't they?!

Re: AFP TEST???

DDC- Are there any specific reasons your doctor is pushing this test? Age? Family History? Other factors? If there aren't any underlying reasons I would skip this test. The chance of a false positive is way too high IMO and then you'd spend even more to get an amnio to confirm or deny those results. I'd have your regular anatomy scan (which is usually a level 2, is that what you had last time? sounds like it) and then if anything shows up on that (and I pray they won't) then I'd go for the amnio if that's what would make you feel most comfortable.

The biggest question is, what wouldyou do with the results of these tests? Would it change anything for you? Is having time to prepare a huge deal for you? That is a very valid reason, but is that extra time with that knowledge worth the money for the tests? For some it very well could be! Only you can answer these questions mama but I pray everything will be just fine. And chances are, they will :hugs:

Re: AFP TEST???

supposedly Adavanced Maternal Age...I'm 36. he also told me that I need to have another c-sect. b/c ruptured uterus is very common...I have read that VBAC should be fine and 1% of VBAC's have a rupture...still haven't done too much research, only hit a few sites...it was an anatomy scan, with this one, we (I) don't want to know the sex, DH does...thinking of having tech put it in an envelope, seal it and deliver it to the cake maker to design a cake and surprise everyone at the shower, but then the guests wouldn't be able to buy gender specific stuff...argh...I want to be surprised but see the benefits of knowing....we found out with DS, if it's a boy we don't need a THING but if it's a girl, we need clothing that's all...have ALL of the gear (DS is only 3 1/2 carseats are still good, not expired and i scored a dbl tandem stroller last weekend at a yardsale, CHEAP!!!)...any suggestions? I should post another thread on that one...LOL

AS far as the results, just prepare...but I AM a HUGE RESEARCHER and could make mahself CRAZY

Re: AFP TEST???

Yeah, I am considered adv maternal age as well...but I refused all that testing. I figure if they see something at my level 2 u/s in a few weeks, we will proceed from there. We are also multiple c/sections..but my OB doesn't seem a bit concerned with anything at this point. Why worry yourself if there is no reason kwim?

As far as the gift buying guides, I've seen it go two ways that might be new to you and maybe will help!

1) Have an "Annoucement/Gender Reveal Party" about a month before your shower for close friends and family - just something small - and let your shower guests know that you will be announcing the gender on a certain date on FB/Blog/via email/whatever so that if they want to buy gender specific things they can wait until then. Or just hold the invites until the Reveal Party has taken place.
2) Register for both boy and girl specific things and return whatever you end up not needing. Make sure your guests include a receipt AND specify things are off the registry when ordering - also this is much easier if you do your registry off Amazon instead of the traditional BBB or BRU or Target, as Amazon's return policies are better and EVERYTHING comes with a receipt - by email as well as in the box. Guests that want to buy gender specific items can buy one of each and let you return the one you don't want, therefore buying you essentially a gift AND a gift card. Of course this doesn't work with all groups but some folks might be keen on this idea. I've known people who have pulled it off.

I like the idea of a Gender Announcement Party!!! But that still leaves me having to be social and 'deal' with people in my home (clean up before and after) a month or so before baby...uh, I know me, and I will be cranky to say the least! DH's family believes that Registry's are rude, they don't use them so that's out for them. I am not a fan of Whinnie the Pooh themed things, and told MIL in a casual convo about nursery theme, cause she suggested W.the Pooh...I told her 'I am just not fond of W.the Pooh' and sure enough....we got a highchair, walker, pack n play, and who knows what else from her side W.the Pooh themed....LOL...Walmart here I come to return it!!!! I was grateful for the gifts and it's the thought that counts, not the usefulness of the gift, right? I bought the rain forest chair that we wanted and use the gift card from the return on necessities like diapers, etc...worked out great! OH well!!!!

I am thinking about doing a 'Sip and See' if I don't cave and find out the sex....if I cave, I'll have a shower at my house...maybe...still the idea of having everyone over at one time (planned) to see baby...instead of entertaining a few ppl each day for a few weeks...
