No commute or more money?

Hypothetically, would you rather have a job where you earned $25k less, but no commute, or would you rather make $25k more per year and have a 40 min commute each way? Sadly I chose the $25k more and am now freaking out about my decision. However, that is a lot more money.

while i love not having to commute 40 mins isnt too terrible considering a lot of people that live in metro areas do that all the time. i dont even make 25k a year, i would jump at the chance to to make that much more just to drive further.

Thanks, money wise it is like a once in a career type opportunity, but I am so sad about missing out on more time with DS.

Re: No commute or more money?

I took a job for a huge pay cut (from salary to hourly) and dropped my hours to working only part time afternoons & evenings less than 5 minutes from home. DH does the long commute for the big bucks. We both feel that our main priority in life are our children and they are way better off always having one of us available. I feel like I'm able to put my kids first because of taking a big pay cut & DH has always made so much more $$$ than me that it would not have benefitted our kids the most if he took the pay cut instead of me.

Based on our personal priority scale we could never be a 2 career family and feel we were putting our children first rather than ourselves. That could change as all of our kids get older, but until they are all out of the house I will always prioritize them over my job. I have taken many years off work so my kids could have the best of me & not the stressed out & over worked version of me.

the girl I babysit for is actually dealing with a similar dilemma right now. Her current job is an hour away, but it's salary and a good one, plus she gets 3 weeks vacation a year PLUS sick time. If she takes the new job it will be right up the street from where we live, but less money AND it's hourly, so she loses the perk of her paycheck not being affected if she has to leave early on occasion. She is planning to keep her current position with the commute

I already commute 30 min. So long as my children are young, I'll choose no commute. DH and I are moving closer to a our jobs because we both have a 30 min commute and low wage jobs so something has to give.

I currently commute 25-30 min depending on traffic for my job that is full time, salery, 8 weeks vacation, 15 sick days a year (that just keep accumilateing if I don't use them), employer paid family insurance (including dental and vision). An extra 10 min wouldn't bother me. Both DH and I moved to a smaller community for the better schools, better living conditions. I work 6:30am -2:30 pm so still home in plenty of time. If I worked 8-5 it might make a bigger difference.

I am about to be commuting an hour each way....again. It will be a total of a 13 hr work day...and it may be while I'm pregnant (waiting to POAS)...

Re: No commute or more money?

Thanks everyone. Ideally, I would love DH to have the job with the big salary and the commute. However, we both applied to the same district (for different positions) and I got the job. I do know in the long term this will probably be very positive for my family- it will help us save for college for DS, etc rather than just get by. In the short term it is a very hard choice to make.
