If you have a child that has a sound sensitivity...
...do you try to keep the child away from the sounds that bother them? Or try to muffle them on purpose? DD's sound sensitivity seems to be getting worse. She has never had a problem with the fireworks but is already expressing concern over the sound this year. I was considering getting a pair of my dads sound protector ear things (wow what are those called that you wear while shooting a gun???) and letting her wear them so that she can enjoy the fireworks. Normally I would just let her cover her ears and slowly try to get her to put her hands down and realize the sound isn't all that bad. Should I just do this like I normally do or muffle the sound so she can watch and not have to experience the fear before realizing its not so bad?

Don't force it.
Fun and function has ear protection for sensory kiddos. We use old headphones with the cord cut off for dd. but really want the kid style from funandfunction.com when her therapy money comes through. |
Fire works I would use the head phones just because they can be so loud and frightening for a child. Something like the vacuum I wouldn't.

I never forced my students. I figure with a typical kid they will find ways to cope as they get older that are comfortable to them and more socially acceptable.
My favorite headphones were on amazon. Lemme go find a link. |

These
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss...+earmuff&ajr=0 Not so soundproof that they can check out but good to muffle the noises. My students used them for assemblies, fire drills, when other students were loud in the classroom, recess and lunch most often. |

If you need something less noticeable and easily found by the 4th you can find ear plugs in a little case at Walgreens. Avery has noise sensitivity(never been to fire works:cry:) and he chooses to wear plugs when I vaccum. I love the headphones in the pp but he has a big old man sized head:chuckle: and I can never find any that inexpensive in adult size.

What does her OT say?

OP -- you might be able to find them in a sporting goods store or a gun shop. If you're in a gun friendly state the people there might be able to help you out.
