Avocado

I am interested in giving my LO avocado for his first food. Any suggestions on how to prepare? He is almost 5 months old. TIA!

Slice in small pieces or mash, sprinkle with a little sea salt :)

ETA, I personally think 5 months is too young for solids. But you only asked how to prepare it. :)

Re: Avocado

Just cut a slice and mash it with a fork or the back of a spoon. I personally don't add any seasonings to any homemade baby food until about 1 yr old. Avocado is one of DDs favorite foods right now

Straight from the avocado with a spoon

Blend with Breast milk and freeze in tiny portion- we use Baby cubes. One avocado (perfectly ripened) can go a long way and it does freeze nicely.

I cut out a slice and mashed it up. I ate the rest with a little salt on a piece of squaw bread toast. Only I enjoyed our meal :)

Use a spoon, gently scrape small amounts at a time on to your spoon, this will make a purée.. Enjoy!

I puréed avocado and breastmilk and froze it in cubes. I expected it to brown like avocado does in the fridge, but it had stayed perfectly green. I tried just smashing half an avocado and feeding it to dd like that and she gagged. She needed it thinned down a bit which is why I added the breastmilk. She loves her avocado.

Since I like avocado, I just scraped it with a spoon and fed it to DD. Then I ate the left over.
You can puree it.
you can cut it into cubes. (Most babies will just mush them until they get better coordination. It's messy but teaches them needed skills.)

I would not add salt. Babies don't need salt for food to taste good.

**I think it is a personal choice of when to give solids. I know that most people no longer start solids till the child is 6 months BUT that is a recent thing. My DS is 9 and the recommendations back then was 4 month. Needless to say, everyone ...even the daycare thought I was nuts for waiting till 4 months in those days. Many people start "solids" earlier by giving a little rice cereal at night etc. DH was started on solids at less than 2 weeks old!(Cereal in his bottle and spoon fed mashed potatoes). I would see how your child is responding to you eating. IF your child shows and interest, I see no harm in giving them a bite or two. You should not expect them to eat large amounts when they first start solids. Just a few bites.

Re: Avocado

we are doing child led with DS2. I cut the avocado in half, than slice into finger sized peices and let him eat/play with it. Most of it ends up mashed into everything but, his mouth.

Also, the salt thing, well, if your a traditional foodie than you would probably add a little salt. There is no right and wrong, it just depends on your own lifestyle.
