Green, baby toys! Help

Hey ladies!

I am due in November with our first, and not wanting to fill my house with loads of plastic/garbage. Q1, how do you balance your desire to buy toys for your kids with your desire not to support the plastics industry? Q2, what brands have you found that use earth friendly materials in all of their lines? (Which of these can be found at mainstream stores? Target, BRU, etc)

What are your favorite, earth friendly baby and toddler toys?

HABA, and Melissa & Doug offer a wide variety of wooden toys (not sure on how green they are, but they last forever...). Green Toys is a good brand as well, they offer a lot of recycled plastic products. I have found all of these at mainstream stores. They cost a little more but they are pretty durable as well. Here are links to a few sites I have stumbled across

http://www.greentoys.com/toys.html (look up retailers in the USA.. there are tons)

I have found that buying DD toys that aren't green or are more mainstream isn't a horrible thing. But they do tend to multiply and they break constantly or do not get used. My best toy purchases for her have been a play kitchen (home made) with play food (fabric/wood), play dishes (green toys).

Since you spend a little more money on these toys, you are less likely to purchase MORE toys than you need. DD loves things she can learn with, use her imagination with and anything that she can pretend with/draw with is always a big hit.

Green toys rock!

I love Green Toys. They are made in the USA from recycled milk jugs!

There is also a company called Nova Naturals and all their products are totally natural and made in the USA or Europe. They are really pricey but beautiful stuff.

I personally prefer having a smaller amount of quality toys I feel good about and safe for my children to play with rather than a lot of cheaper junk.

I'm super adamant when it comes to toys in our household. I mean, no plastic, battery operated, mainstream toys. Educo, Haba, Plan Toys, are some of the brands we love. We do have a few Green Toys cars from b-day gifts and Melissa and Doug though I'm not too impressed with the quality of the Melissa and Doug toys. We build a lot and play with puzzles....I want DS to use his imagination. He gets to play with the other toys at daycare which i don't love but that's only for a short period of time on days he's there (he's there 2 days/week for ~6hrs). I had to turn my head the first few times. Took me awhile to accept it.

Oompa toys have a great selection of toys....give them a try!

I agree with most of the brands mentioned - Haba (my favorite), Plan Toys and Green Toys and some Melissa and Doug stuff. And you can't go wrong with books! Also Under The Nile has a few things, stuffed animals. And Miyim Organic stroller toys.

I've just been looking into green/natural toys as we are preparing for my son's first Christmas :-) In addition to the brands everyone has mentioned, I found a few more sites that have been helpful.

http://www.healthystuff.org/get-stuf...up-report=Toys -- Sort of like the EWG's Skindeep database but for toys. Not very comprehensive, but at least it's something. I found it interesting that some reputable brands, e.g. Haba, have toys that scored high in toxins.

I love Plan Toys and Green Toys. Under the Nile makes some really great soft toys from organic cotton. My two boys LOVED their cloth veggies from Under the Nile for quite a while, especially when teething. I buy their toys from Ecomom.com. Their regular prices are higher but they are always having a great sale and their customer service is beyond amazing. I don't know if you are looking to buy today, but they are having a big cyber monday sale. There are quite a few things left in stock but a lot is sold out. You save $20 if you spend $50 and get free shipping. Plus schoola.com has a $40 voucher for $20 that you can use. So if you buy $60 you save $20 automatically and then use the $40 voucher and your total is $0 so all you spent was $20 on the voucher. And all orders placed today get a code for $15 off $30+ to be used at ecomom in December. I believe they carry all the brands mentioned thus far (haba, green toys, mellissaand doug, plan city, nova naturals, etc.) Not to keep droning on and on but you should check it out. And no, I don't work for them I just really like them!!

http://www.ecomom.com/under-the-nile-green-bean.html This was both my kids fave for a long time. They'd hold a "leg" in each hand and chew all over the head when they were cutting teeth. I buy this for everyone I know who has a baby. :)
